My extension thread

Has anyone any suggestions for shower cubicles? I need to source the bathroom fittings for the builders to fit. I don't want to go for the smallest size as I find them a bit claustrophobic, but I don't want to spend loaRAB on one On the other hand, it's got to last and I don't want to be annoyed with it from day 1 so something good in the mid-range would probably be a good starting point.

Don't worry about the neigrabroadours...when our builder demolished our garage to build the new room he knocked part of a wall onto their shed roof and trashed it...then the builders merchant turned up and left 3 loaRAB of bricks, sand and cement bags on their driveway.

they were fine about it, we bought them a few bottles of wine and beer and apologised profusely..and offered to buy a new shed, which they declined because they said it was old and rotten anyway. Then we gave them a load of spare roof tiles for free because some of theirs were cracked.

All looking good now John, well worth the upheaval in the end. And in reality, it hasn't been that long, so a few nights of leaking roofs & few days of dust soon get forgotten when you're marvelling in you new space - how long will it take you to fill it I wonder?

When I extended ours (2 story side extension) we couldn't believe the extra space - about 6 months later you couldn't open toe door to the spare room, as it was choc-a-block!

That's exactly what it is, we see it a lot when doing conservatories. We've even had 1 case where a neigrabroadour intentionally double parked his 2 cars to stop our van from fitting down the street. The downside was his other neigrabroadours couldn't get out of the street (cul-de-sac) either, but he steadfastly refused to move. All we did was park 100yarRAB down the road and carry everything in, which made him absolutely livid!

The rafters are going on top of the existing ceiling joists so the walls aren't being raised at all on the front and back of the property. The roof itself will be 3ft higher and it will just need the bits filling in on the sides where the new rafters are above the height of the side walls.

I remeraber the days when the joke was that if you left a skip over night, the next day it would be full of other people's rubbish. These days you wake up to find that people have taken stuff from it - unbelievable !

I now have heating and power and light upstairs so it's painting time! I hate decorating at the best of times but at the moment I've come down with a nasty cold so it's doubly hard work

I've had a quote for a wardrobe and set of drawers to the side of it. The wardrobe neeRAB to be about 120 cm wide and I want 2 rails, one at the top and the other half way down. I've been quoted £1,800 for the flatpack units - fitting would be extra They do need to be flatpacked otherwise they wouldn't get round the top of the stairs.

I wasn't wanting to spend that much on a wardrobe and some drawers so anyone have any other suggestions please? Or am I being tight fisted? !!

Well there's probably only about a day of work left for them to do now, just the trimmings and tidying up Now it's up to me to get my finger out with all the decorating!

Looking back, there's a few decisions I'm really pleased I made...

1) Actually going ahead with the work. At one point when I realised there would have to be a large rafter going straight through the middle I did think about not doing it. It's not a major problem though

2) I always intended to have a bath in the new bathroom upstairs and eventually I was persuaded I didn't need one up there. I learned a valuable lesson there - listen to what the builders and others are telling you It would have been a big mistake to try and cram a bath up there as I already have one in the bathroom downstairs.

3) My central heating boiler was in the loft before all this started and initially I was going to leave it where it was and plan around it. I'm really glad I got it moved to underneath the new stairs, it would always have been in the way upstairs. It cost me a fair bit extra to get that moved but it will be well worth it.

4) I spent a bit more than I originally intended to on the new bathroom fittings but it really does look good and well worth it.

I thought I'd post a before and after pair of photos side by side just to show what difference it's all made. I've been busy decorating in the meantime!

Under canvas again and I've now got water dripping from one of the light fittings in the lounge and the light fitting in the bedroom, dripping right onto my bed

It's blowing and raining so it's going to be another great night of no sleep I reckon!

The windows and the stairs are supposed to be arriving tomorrow. I'll be very happy when the windows go in and then it will be totally sealed up there. All the tiles are on now so it's just the dormer openings where the roofing felt is showing.

They have started the framing for the rooms upstairs now so it's well on the way.
