my favorite musical is The Sound of Music. :) i also like Rent, Moulin Rouge, Grease, and Enchanted.

I love musicals! The ones I like are:

Annie
Swingtime (I hate Fred Astaire, but I love Ginger Rogers)
Grease
Brigadoon (My favorite songs are 'almost like being in love' and 'real love of my life' the second one makes me laugh :D .)
Wizard of Oz
Meet Me in St. Louis
Fiddler on the Roof
My Fair Lady
On the Town
Wicked  but I like the book more.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers I didn't really like. I thought the plot was dumb and it felt like some of the songs just came out of nowhere. Random.

High Society, I absolutely hated. I thought it was stupid to remake The Philidelphia Story at all. HS drove me crazy because Grace Kelly simply imitated Katherine Hepburn and male leads were casted completely wrong. It probably could have been better if Grace Kelly had created her own version of Tracy Lord instead of using Katherine's and if Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby had switched roles. Frank definitely could have pulled off C.K. Dexter-Haven's charms way better than Bing Crosby. It would have been more believable too, because seriously, who would choose Bing Crosby over Frank Sinatra?

end rant

Sorry I just had to get that out of my system.

I think so. I haven't seen the original movie though.

I also didn't like An American in Paris very much. Love Gene Kelly and most of his movies, but that one was just kind of dull for me.

Another movie musical I didn't like much was Thoroughly Modern Millie. I saw it live recently and it was FABULOUS, but Julie Andrew's movie version wasn't unfortunately. They remade it and with better music and all, so it's definetly improved now.

Wasn't Hairspray originally a film that was made into a stage play?

I agree - choreography can make all the difference, even if the music is wonderful.

Also, I have to mention a couple that I don't like - An American in Paris (sorry, not a big Gershwin fan) and Hair - I absolutely HATE the muscial Hair.

My favorite musicals are RENT, Wicked, Lion King, and Beauty and the Beast.

I've seen most of these on stage at the Pantages Theatre.. RENT once, Wicked four times, Lion King twice, and B&tB 3 times. :sigh:

I have been looking for a thread like this forever! I am glad I found it!

I love Grease. whenever I'm watching that movie I get so into the songs and have to act the scenes out.

I don't think I have a preference in terms of original movie musical or one that was originally a play.

Hairspray was made into a movie? I had no idea.

I like JCS too! It's the only Llloyd Webber musical I like 'cause the other ones...I prefer musicals with a lot of dancing in it,the ones that comes from B'way and were staged by great choreographers. BTW,I also like films with musical orientation,I mean with a soundtrack really evident like Flashdance and Dirty Dancing . I also love Fiddleron the roof, specially Tradition,Matchmaker and obviously If I were a rich man!

Musicals are definately my favourite genre, theyre just so fun to watch! :D

I watched August Rush recently, such a heart warming movie, like a fairytale and I loved the music in it. :sigh:

 one of my favorite songs. I also love singing from Grease 2 "I'll be yours in winter, when the snow is on the ground. I'll warm you through December, and I'll always be around. We'll kiss below the mistletoe, when Santa comes to town. Girl for all seasons, I'll be your girl for all seasons." and "I want a cool cool cool rider"

I love  Rent. Just recently saw it on Broadway. I loved the movie and the show equally.

Very interesting about the whole Audrey/Julie Andrews thing!!!

I love My Fair Lady............and Mary Poppins.

did you ever see the play? I saw it so when watching the movie I was trying to see how good it would be compared to the play. I liked it equally.
with Chicago I liked the play better than the movie

oh I forgot to mention how I love the West Side Story songs too like America and Quintet

I'm going to have to watch the old Annie, I don't think I've ever seen it.

I'd have to say Rent is definately my favorite, although I've never seen it on stage :( followed closely by Wicked. Which I've also never seen.
