Movie Roles That Change The Way You Look At The Actor

Jake Gyllenhaal - I didn't really like him that much. I had seen, October Sky, Bubble Boy and Donnie Darko and really never thought twice about him, then when he starred in The Good Girl and TDAT and eventually BBM, I fell head over heels for him and haven't looked back since

Ryan Gosling - I had seen The Believer and Murder By Numbers and honestly, I didn't find him attractive, or even a likeable actor and when I heard he was going to be in The Notebook, I was more then disappointed, WOW, I fell in love instantly with him. Totally changed the way I feel about him since the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix - I HATED his character in Gladiator, which kinda made me hate him.. Then after I watched signs, I kinda started loving him a little bit..

Reese Witherspoon - She stars in one of my favorite movies of all time and that is The Man In The Moon, after that film, I began to love all her films, especially Cruel Intentions, Legally Blonde and Sweet Home Alabama, but I dunno, after seeing her in Walk The Line, Rendition, Just Like Heaven, ETC.. I just don't really like her anymore and for some reason. I find her less likeable, even when she's playing a good character. I still like her, but now, I feel like she's overrated..

Don't watch HSM. For the sake of your sanity, avoid it at all costs.

Y'know, there's actually a lot of us who feel the same way about Zac and his role in Hairspray, so don't hate yourself too much!

I recently watched Spanglish and finally found a role where I could not only tolerate Tea Leoni, but I actually felt sympathy for her character. And this, despite the fact that she should be so incredibly un-sympathetic.

I credit both Ms. Leoni and the director for bringing out such a stellar performance. We want a different ending, but we're okay with what happens because Tea Leoni plays her character so humanly.

After watching 17 Again, I have to say that Zac Efron is a talented actor. He impressed me in Hairspray, but this movie has made me realize he's the real deal.

I didn't really care for 13 going on 30 either. I mean it was okay and I watched it with my Grandma and enjoyed that, but it's nothing I'd go out and buy.

I use to think the same about Mandy Moore, but then I watched Saved! and my opinion's changed.

Jim Carrey in: The Majestic. It was the first movie I ever watched with Jim as a more serious character and it really changed how I felt about him as an actor in general not only a comedy actor.

Matthew Lillard I didn't like him at first, but then I saw him in Scooby Doo. He did such an amazing job playing Shaggy I grew to respect the man.

^The Others was a fantastic movie and her performance reminded me of Grace Kelly.

I always thought Nicole Kidman could act (Too Die For) but I wasn't absolutely in love with her until Moulin Rouge/The Others....man she had a fantastic year of movies even though her personal life was in shambles (Maybe she should call Sandra Bullock!)

excellent topic, caught my eye and I had to check it out

I have to go with Jude Law in Wilde.

I have to admit that before seeing Wilde I knew he was a good actor but didn't really care. After seeing Wilde I had to see everything he was in. Shopping was freaky and Gattaca...words cannot describe my love for this movie.

Adam was great in Reign Over Me. I've always been a fan of his (Happy Gilmore is one of my favorites) but it was nice to see him do something else (I haven't seen his other "serious actor" roles--PDL).

Natalie Portman in Closer.
I liked her before but I'm still speechless over her performance. Amazing

Mark Wahlberg in The Departed.
He OWNS that movie. After watching it, he just went straight to my top ten favorite actors.

I hate to admit this, but I agree. I have never seen High School Musical but I thought Zac Efron would be another pretty face cast for that pretty face alone. But not only is his singing good, but he really did SO well as Link. He was cheesy, charming and nice. I was really surprised I enjoyed his role.

I haven't seen Pulse and I'm not a big of Kristen Bell, however, her fans say this wasn't a typical performance from her. A lot of them were disappointed as well.

 Actually, for me Jennifer Garner works in the reverse. I liked her originally (on Felicity, then Alias) but as more time goes on, she seems like yet (another) overhyped beautiful celebrity. Then again, I am also aware that on some level my impression of her has changed b/c of her recent interviews, rumors...which shouldn't impact view of onscreen performance.

Judy :cat:

First one that popped into my head was Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind. I mean he's normally such a goofball in his movies (which I love btw) but in this he was so subtle! It's one of my favourite movies.

I'd also mention Ashton Kutcher really surprised me in the butterfly effect. When I think about him it's usually when he's in his punkd mode and I couldn't take him seriously but he's great in this movie!

Generally once I associate someone with a children's show, I can't take them seriously as an actor. This is the typical case, but I've really been impressed with Josh Peck from Drake & Josh in both Mean Creek and The Wackness.

Mean Creek is a really interesting movie and when I saw that, my opinion of him as an actor totally changed. He plays a bully who's lured into a trip down the river with the older brother and some friends of the kid who he bullied. He got the character across so well! And now The Wackness, also, has shattered any image I had of him as solely a child/teenaged actor without much talent, because I thought he was great in that as well.
