Movie Roles That Change The Way You Look At The Actor

I would have to say Jake Gyllenhaal in BBM. I liked him in The Day After Tomorrow but then he did BBM. I just can't look at him the same without shuddering:sick:

Matthew Broderick. I nver thought he was a bad actor, but he never blew me away or anything...UNTIL I saw him on Broadway in The Producers. He was superb!

Speaking of Jude Law, I always loved his performance as Alfie. That was one of the roles that made me realize that Jude Law could internalize a character completely. The way he played the agony of Alfie's unsatisfying yet tempting lifestyle was amazing.

I watched the teaser and I'm looking forward to Charlie St. Cloud. I also want to catch up with Me and Orson Wells.

Just wanted to throw something out there about Kristen Bell...

It could just be that the movie was crap or the screenplay was not any good.

I adore Natalie Portman and think she's one of the best actresses out there right now--but I've seen clips of the Star Wars movies and it's like it's a completely different actress...it's stilted and awkward and just horrible....It all comes down to the screenplay really--an actor can only do so much with a crap screenplay.

I normally hate Keira Knightley but in Pride and Prejudice I thought she was perfect...I'm still not her biggest fan by any means but I realized that she actually has some talent.

i never gave Jude Law a chance until i saw Sherlock Holmes b/c of Robert Downey Jr..who i love! and i fell in love with Jude..he's an amazing actor...since then i've seen a couple more of his movies...i love him now!

I agree with Elijah Wood. Before LOTR, I was "ehh...", but I was really impressed by him, and it made me take notice of him.

*whispers* I think Orlando's a tad overrated. Though I will admit, Pirates of the Caribbean made me take more notice of him. I couldn't see his appeal in LOTR (looks or otherwise) and his character wasn't as developed as some of the others, but in POTC he had more of a lead role and I thought he was a good actor.

Yeah, Closer gave my respect to Natalie as an actress. I haven't seen V for Vendetta nor have the inclination to watch Star Wars, but yeah, I think Natalie's a great actress.

I have to say Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain. I didn't really cared much for him before. But Brokeback got me good. He's amazing as Jack.

Yes! Good choice! She was amazing.

And oddly enough, I usually love Christian Ricci, but I thought she was TERRIBLE in that movie! Very hammy.

Yeah that and I always thought he was attractive, but I never saw the big deal about him until I saw him in Sherlock Holmes and Alfie. I try to remember that he can still produce good work even with the craziness of his personal life.

Oh wow this thread is ooooollllldddd.

Anyway, for me it would be George Clooney. I used to have some sort of respect for him because of his 'ER' days. But then his portrayal of Batman in Batman and Robin made me lose that respect. That was actually the only time I wished Batman would just die [which is extremely drastic given how much I loved Batman when I was growing up].

Which is why I'm the only one in my circle of close friends who hasn't seen O Brother, Where Art Thou or Syriana.

Eduard Norton in American History X... i never really liked him but then... wow!

Jonny Deep in Charlie...

Richard gere in american Gigalow...

if i remember anyone else i'll be back!

I'm an Elijah Wood girl, myself, so I echo the praise for Mr. Wood. He's a phenomenal young actor, IMO. Incredibly soulful. And in his interviews, he ranges from being wild/free spirited to incredibly articulate and eloquent. I love Elijah....

All of that being said, I definitely agree with Jim Carrey. He was amazing in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as mild mannered, quiet Joel (?). For a long time I only associated him with zany roles in comedies (never saw The Truman Show).

I also have to say: Nicole Kidman. I was never really a fan of hers. I thought she was cold and aloof, and thought she was famous b/c she was married to Tom Cruise. But I loved her performance in Moulin Rouge. Great talent.

I was never a Leo DiCaprio fan, either, but I liked him in Titanic. He had wonderful chemistry with Kate Winslet.

Judy :cat:

Mark Ruffalo playing Matty in 13 going on 30. Now every time I look at him I think, "Aw, Matty!" Even when he's playing tough cops and not so sweet people. Hee.

I never thought Sean Penn was that great of an actor until Mystic River. Before I always thought of him as Spicoli from Fast Times, but he was just phenomenal in Mistic River. I want to cry just thinking about his performance.

I agree! I hate Jennifer Garner!

As for actors that changed the way I see them (great topic, by the way! ), these are my choices:

Ashton Kutcher in The Butterfly Effect. This one has been mentioned already, but I completely agree. His performance totally surprised me and blew me away. Mega props to him because I never really liked him before I saw this movie.

Ben Affleck in Chasing Amy. I really disliked Ben Affleck and I was reluctant to see this movie, just because he was in it. But it was very good and he gave a great performance. Hopefully his future roles end up as good as this one.

Charlize Theron in Monster. Her performance in this movie was beyond oustanding. I developed a newfound respect for her.

That's all I can think of right now. :)

I don't the HSM films and while I love Hairspray I wasn't bothered by Zac Efron. He was singing and dancing again. 17 Again made me change my opinion. The kid can act!

Dakota Fanning has always been the worlds most annoying kid imo but Push made me see her differently and I kinda like her now.

Cable Guy made me look at Jim Carrey differently. I saw it years after it was released and after I'd seen a load of his usual stuff. i much prefer him when it's not doing the slap-stick stuff.

I haven't rated Adam Sandler for a while but Funny People reminded me he can make good films.

I agree. Mandy has many gifts. Her voice is way above average for a pop princess, too. :D.

I'll have to agree with Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, definitely. He's always been dismissed as a comedy guy (and thus I also thought the same about him), but he really, really did a great job in here. It's the best film of his career, easily.

I didn't think of Russell Crowe until I saw this thread and the previous posts, but I have to agree. I always thought he was those kind of arrogant, cocky bastards but he did a great job in A Beautiful Mind. I cried in that show! That's how good he was.

I think Elijah Wood did a fantastic job in LoTR, too. A lot of people get too caught up in Orlando Bloom/Viggo Mortensen, and they forget Elijah. He was amazing as Frodo. Carrying the entire trilogy and portraying how the Ring slowly corrupted him was going to be hard, but he pulled it off brilliantly. It was completely natural. You felt for him. Plus, I always thought he was a low-profile guy, but this has to be his breakthrough role to date.
