Movie Roles That Change The Way You Look At The Actor

When I saw The Runaways I was surprised that Kristen Stewart could actually act and not just blink a hundreds times a minute. Now I'm by no means a fan now but I'm looking forward to seeing what else she can do after that.

I used to enjoy Jude Law's work. But his personal life went so crazy that I was kinda put off by him. The little bit I saw of Sherlock Holmes was pretty decent though.

It's not really a movie role but i saw Natalie Portman rapping on Saturday Night Live and that completely changed my view on her. I'm not her biggest fan and thinks that she is kind of bland but when I saw that SNL sketch I really liked her. I guess it's more of not taking yourself too seriously.

Orlando Bloom was so cool playing Legolas in LOTR.

edited by Kelly_mvpics: It is against the rules to talk about an actor (or real life person) in a derogatory way. Criticizing an actor is alright as long as it's done in a respectful and non insulting way.

I have never cared for Ben & Matt, ever, but Good Will Hunting certainly brought out a whole new potential for them! Matt went on to be great in the Bourne series, and Ben, uh, I guess is still looking for his lucky break, or whatever. But way to go Matt! ;)

I don't know what you mean by this but if it's a derogatory use of the word, meaning homosexual (vs. cigarette or bundle of sticks) then that's not only not cool, but against FF rules. We don't bash here, and se certainly don't bash using such terms. Send me a PM if you have any questions.

That's funny, because I can't stand Matt Damon except when he's in Kevin Smith movies. In fact, I dislike him so much that I won't see Good Will Hunting.

On the other hand, I was finally convinced to watch Bourne Identity and I thought he was terrific (I didn't care for him in the remake of Purple Noon, either - I think it was called The Talented Mr. Ripley). I have to definitely reassess my dislike of the actor, but I still won't see Good Will Hunting. Still, it means he definitely falls into this category.

Well, given the ****ty script and directing in star wars, Natalie didn't have much to work with.

I used to be a Lindsey Lohan fan. I thought she was great in Mean Girls and when I was younger, The Parent Trap remake! After all her problems in recent years I tried to still like her as an actress... And then I saw I Know Who Killed Me! Not only was it one of the worst films I've ever seen, Lindsey was terrible and drove home for me that she really isn't that great of an actress. No more will I think she's going to be one of the next great actresses.

I'm just saying that his dialogue is stilted, awkward and just plain bad. I guess the same could be said about his ability to direct...and yet he has some of the most successful movies out there....go figure

Oh, great call! I rediscovered Leonardo Dicaprio through The Departed. He was always a solid, passionate performer, but The Departed showed me a side of him I didn't know was possible. Billy Costigan could have been a wannabe wiseguy role, but Dicaprio really got it. He went right to Billy's fears, and it really paid off.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. I knew him before and people had been telling me that he's good but never paid any attention. But I watched BBM and he just blew me away with his performance.

Now, now, what is that about it all being about the screenplay? Poor direction is most likely what the recent Star Wars trilogy was about. George Lucas did care about his storyline but he is not good at all at directing actors IMHO. Both Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen gave abysmal performances there, but I've found them very good in other projects such as Closer or Life as a House.

As far as Keira Knightley is concerned, I don't necessarily dislike her, but I don't see what all the fuss is about. She's far from terrible, but she's far from impressive as well, from what I've seen of her work. I haven't seen Pride and Prejudice yet, but I dare expect to be impressed since she got an Academy Award nomination out of it. I liked her in The Jacket, but she was obviously overshadowed by the always impeccable Jennifer Jason Leigh.

Inclinded to agree with that. Always find him kinda annoying but really liked him in Sherlock Holmes.

I didn't rate Robert Pattinson as an actor until I saw Remember Me

Definitely Ethan Hawke! I never really heard of him until the whole "Him cheating on Uma" came out, so that's all I really knew him for. But my god, after seeing his movies, I now think he is one of the most talented actors I've ever seen. He NEVER misses a step this man, from Great Expectations to Gattaca to Dead Poet's Society and beyond. But by far, he proved himself to be an amazing actor in Before Sunrise and Before Sunset

Charlize Theron in Monster was a little different for me. I never thought that she wouldn't be able to play this role. I know she was in like a million bad movies before but I never thought she couldn't act. She has always been more than a pretty face to me and her acting was good even in bad movies. Just that the bad movies were a waste of her talent. I always saw her trying hard to make something out of the bad roles she was given....but sadly the script was just too crappy. So I'm happy for her that she finally got her recognition. :)

Oh, same. Well, about the first part. I saw the first High School Musical and I cannot stand any of the actors in that movie. I don't think I'll ever want to see a movie any of them is in.

I might have to see Hairspray now that I've read your opinion. But, I saw the play, so I wouldn't be missing much.

I agree about Jude Law same here never gave the guy a shot but thought he was great in Sherlock Holmes.

Hes always been a good actor but for me I didn't become a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio until I saw the Departed then watched Shutter Island and now hes like my favorite actor but if it wasn't for his role in the Departed I probably still would just see him as the pretty boy from Titanic and not give him a shot. Departed changed my thoughts on Mark Wailberg aswell.
