Most overrated movie ever

I am glad to see Shawshank Redemption mentioned a few times, I really don't see what the fuss is about. I mentioned to some frienRAB in the pub that its overated, and they all thought it was great! Its a very pretentious and self satisfied film, and dramatically pretty weak.

Also agree with the shouts for Crash, again a very self satisfied film, but incredibly empty as its so preachy.

I'd disagree with Brokeback Mountain, its a very powerful film imo.

I found the Departed a bit overated as well, its enjoyable and well made, but not the masterpiece some people make it out to be.

Crash(2005) - Incredibly overrated and have no idea how it won the Oscar... Any of the other four deserved the Oscar in my eyes that year, even Brokeback Mountain, and I didn't particulary enjoy it.

Has to be The Shamshank Redemption for me.

Boring beyond belief. Overhyped, pretentious, tedious, overlong and basically a yawn from start to finish  ZZZzzzz

The latest so called star trek movie total pile of tripe! :sleep:ZZzzzz Vastly overrated.

Starship Troopers 3! I enjoyed the first one the second was just ridiculous & this one despite having one or two of the original cast & stunning Jolene Blalock in it just did not work at all.

Transformers 2 They just should not have bothered! And as to what all the fuss is about Megan Fox? Yes she's pretty sexy looking but when it comes to acting! Well she makes a bloody good fence post.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet but:

The Conversation

And following it up is my little rant!

If I have time, then after watching a film, I like to look it up on IMDB to see what other people thought of it, and what discussion has come out of it. Well the abuse one person got when they suggested it was overrated was startling. Plenty of commments along the lines of 'Well you need to work on your IQ', or 'If you were intelligent, you'd see what makes this film a classic'. How bl00dy pompous and snobbish. As if liking a film was ever down to intelligence. I like the film, I 'get' what Coppola was going for, I just don't think it's fantastic. Does that make me sub-normal in any way? No, it just didn't meet all of my tastes! And more comments along the lines of 'well the critics like it, so it must be good'. Well, no, actually, the critics liking it and me not liking it as much means I think it's overrated! Why the reliance on film critics? I read what they have to say and will often follow their recommendations, but am prepared to make up my own mind at the end of it.

I don't think I've seen it on this board, but it's all over the imdb. How dare people think they are superior just because they agree with film critics?

Rant over :)

Anyway, other overrated films:
All the President's Men (again, it's very good, but it's not THAT good)
Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (I love these films and am a big Star Wars fan, but am the first to admit that they're hardly masterpieces!)
There's Something About Mary (it's funny yes, but it's not the 5-star film a lot of people thought it was)
Knocked Up (a good watch, and amusing, but nothing more)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I'd agree with both of these. Slumdog Millionaire isn't a bad film, but it didn't deserve the hype. It's not even Danny Boyle's best movie.

I don't think Pixar have made a bad film yet (although Cars came close) and I think Toy Story 2 IS a masterpiece, but I'm confused by the universal acclaim for Finding Nemo, Up, Ratatouille and Wall-E. All good movies, none of them great.

My choices would be:

2001 - A Space Odyssey : Pretentious crap. Slow, incredibly boring.

Crash (2004) : Repeatedly preached to with the same message is not my idea of entertainment.

The Green Mile : Over-long film that springs a genre change on you, half-way through.

Blade Runner : Hugely disappointed by this. Watched it again with no change in opinion. Simply found it boring.

And Avatar. Disappointed by this as a James Cameron fan. It was good, but should it be the most successful film of all time? Not by a long shot.

no no no no no!!!!!

Casablanca is my favourite film of all time - spy story, love story, war film, comedy, musical - it has elements of all.

No. And I honestly meant no offence . :)

But these sort of threaRAB can deteriorate at an alarming speed. Which is why I love reading 'em. :D

You're right about Lord of the Rings though, well aside from the first part, which I actually really enjoy. I just don't like where it starts going from parts 2 and 3.

I feel like Blade Runner is trying too hard, or perhaps the people that like it are trying too hard. It's one of the few films that actually really riles me in this way, well apart from The Phantom Menace, of course. :D

Slumdog Millionaire springs to mind. Saw it in the cinema shortly after the BAFTA wins, thought it was brilliant. Got it on dvd a few months later and was bored 20 minutes in.

Personally I think that very last bit lets it down, and I think you'll find the good Dr Kermode agrees with me.;) Plus, who did put the poster back?

Still love the film though, fantastic performances, and when the old guy gets out of prison...
