I don't think this has been mentioned yet but:
The Conversation
And following it up is my little rant!
If I have time, then after watching a film, I like to look it up on IMDB to see what other people thought of it, and what discussion has come out of it. Well the abuse one person got when they suggested it was overrated was startling. Plenty of commments along the lines of 'Well you need to work on your IQ', or 'If you were intelligent, you'd see what makes this film a classic'. How bl00dy pompous and snobbish. As if liking a film was ever down to intelligence. I like the film, I 'get' what Coppola was going for, I just don't think it's fantastic. Does that make me sub-normal in any way? No, it just didn't meet all of my tastes! And more comments along the lines of 'well the critics like it, so it must be good'. Well, no, actually, the critics liking it and me not liking it as much means I think it's overrated! Why the reliance on film critics? I read what they have to say and will often follow their recommendations, but am prepared to make up my own mind at the end of it.
I don't think I've seen it on this board, but it's all over the imdb. How dare people think they are superior just because they agree with film critics?
Rant over
Anyway, other overrated films:
All the President's Men (again, it's very good, but it's not THAT good)
Star Wars: The Original Trilogy (I love these films and am a big Star Wars fan, but am the first to admit that they're hardly masterpieces!)
There's Something About Mary (it's funny yes, but it's not the 5-star film a lot of people thought it was)
Knocked Up (a good watch, and amusing, but nothing more)
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
