Most Overrated Films

Theres some good films listed here:confused: Withnail and I? Seven Samurai? Resevoir Dogs/Pulp fiction? Woody Allen films!!!??:mad: :) Each to his own I guess.

It is annoying when folks rave over something that you had down in your book as just mediocre or worst, just plain bad.

I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that these days an 'highly rated film' = 'a not very good film' (see my windge about 'Mongol').

Overrated in my opinion? Pants Labyrinth, Lord of the Rings, anything done by Coen brothers in the past ten years, anything done by Spielberg in the past 20 years. :mad:

It's a very clever film. Have you watched it all the way to the end? If you watch it once, it's different to iff you watch it twice. I don't want to spoil anything, but you notice things more the second time around, and characters, or rather, your opinion of them changes with the second viewing.



Love Actually is popular because it's full of British actors, and because Richard Curtis has amassed some kind of faux-legendary status as a screenwriter. He's average.
 
At the fear of being lambasted for airing an opinion here on this forum along with others who dare to offer their opinions ;) I have to agree with A Clockwork Orange. Utterly dreadful. Taxi Driver was a let down too after all the hype and cult status which I was lead to believe surrounded it

And on that note I apologise for having the nerve to continue any discussion on this matter ~ no offence intended :rolleyes:

The Shawshank Redemption- which is not in the same league as the others I admit- is a film which having seen once, I have no desire whatsoever to see again.
The praise it gets , and the number of polls it tops. is a mystery to me.
 
Most Best Picture Oscar-winning films are generally overrated, like the patronisingly preachy polemic that was Crash, never before have i seen a movie that screamed "please give me an Oscar!" so desperately in my life,.

Well the last movie before that which was so preachy it was as dumb as a dented doornail was American History X, a story about a Neo Nazi who goes from being a black person-hating fascist pig to becoming a black person-friendmaking decent guy. However, it did not win an Oscar but it came across like it really really wanted to.

I also remember a time when newspapers, movie magazines and Barry Norman would fall over themselves to shower Woody Allen with fawning universal praise with such superlatives as "this movie is a comedic triumph!" and "Woody Allen delivers the funniest movie of the year!" when in reality, Woody Allen would sit around looking depressed while the movie's most attractive actress would end up going to bed with him and having sex with him.
 
Apart from Goodfellas,those are the other movies I considered listing as overrated films.
Absolutely agree with your views on T2,people always defend it's shortcomings with it's groundbreaking SFX,but you need more than SFX to make an absolutely classic movie.

Scarface was good too,possibly one of the best remakes ever.Yet,it had a unbelievable caricature gangster as the centrepiece character while trying to be a fairly serious crime movie.It's 3 hr running time hurts the movie,also.
 
I think this is one of the reasons why critics feel obliged to award any Coen brothers film with a dazzling five star rating. They fear not being taken seriously in the future should they doubt the wonder of the Coen brothers. Alas, this is also a reason as to why there films are 'not so great' post Fargo, they began to believed their own hype.

One day, some plucky critic will turn round and say 'this Coen brothers film is shit!' and when they do, the rest will undoubtedly follow.

They been riding on past glories for far too long IMO.
 
That's the point. It isn't a discussion, it's simple stating of opinion with a few "you're wrongs" thrown in for good measure. Nothing said here is going to change anyone else's mind. We all know what we like and dislike and endlessly repeating it on various threaRAB is really quite pointless as, a) anyone who reaRAB these regularly will already know that opinion, or b) they won't care anyway, all they want to do is publicly announce their own opinion, they're not really interested in anyone else's to any meaningful degree.

It's a bit like being in a pub with a slightly drunk uncle who insists on telling you the same things over and over, which if you were really honest you didn't want to hear in the first place, the first time.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert blah blah blah.... I usually agree with Mark Kermode's opinion but on this one we differ greatly!!
 
Well then, do you feel guilty eyeing up an 18-year-old? You shouldn't. They're legal. You seem to think Spacey's character is a sicko, when he's just a normal guy of that age, who doesn't feel old.

He's actually quite a gentleman about it, when he discovers she's a virgin, so "borderline paedo" with an eighteen year-old who gives of slutty vibes seems a tad unfair.
 
Don't - I can't say it strongly enough :D Especially as you hate the other three too, it's more of the same.



I didn't like the film of this, but loved the Stephen King story long before the film was made so I think I went to it prejudiced, I'm never keen on adaptations if they're of books I really like. :(

Can't understand the dismissal of Withnail and Woody Allen - I love both, but each to their own I suppose, it'd be a boring world otherwise :p

Another one - Zoolander was recommended to me by several people as being hilarious. I like Ben Stiller, but really really didn't find this funny (I tried! - lasted about half an hour...).
 
The Godfather... such a slow paced, boring load of over-hyped balls. I really wish I hadn't bothered buying all 3 of them. I don't even want to watch the other 2 after seeing the dull first one.

Blade Runner... I don't care how many versions or cuts of this film there are, they should all be destroyed, it's crap.

Lost In Translation... I love Bill Murray but this was just so bad. Cue looking around with a gloomy face for 90 mins, acting like you don't get/understand what's going on around you and that you areintellectually superior to everyone and not saying to someone you fancy that you fancy them. Oh, but we do get the lovely views of Tokyo, the only redeeming point of this film. Waste of time.

I refuse to take cover for the flaming that's probably heading my way. Bring it on, bitches!

You're right. I've looked at some screenshots, and some of the hats are incredible. Not all of them mind, but some of them really take the piss:

2hrs21mins into the movie in that scene where that guy gets killed, the black hat that guy is wearing is certainly worthy of mention.

I could go on, but that one was my favourite. :)
