Most Overrated Films

I'm guessing you're still fairly young. I say this because even a forty-something year-old still feels like he's twenty-one. He's not a sick perve. It's nothing to do with perversion. Old people only feel old when they look in the mirror, look at their kiRAB and partner, or get up too quickly. Other than that, they still feel young.

The cinematography, acting, direction and ensemble cast were brilliant, and the script was biting and fresh.



There's Something About Mary is a really funny film, but saying that it has more depth? Sarcasm, or seriousness? :confused:
 
I actually like most of Moulin Rouge, but I don't much like the ending; it seemed messy and incoherent. In the DVD commentary they say they rewrote it a few minutes before filming, and it shows.

However, the main thing I dislike about the film is the ethics. It seemed to me that the Duke was the victim there. He fell in love with a whole, and she took him for every penny she could, while screwing the stage-hand. (Not the stage-hand, the writer, but it's the same thing.) The poor Duke ended up paying for all her frienRAB and the entire cast, and didn't even get laid. OK, he doesn't always behave well with women, but I see him as having been brought up in an all-male boarding school and being very inexperienced. Such experience as he has is in bordellos. She never gives him the slightest hint she doesn't fancy him, but lies through her teeth the whole time. His worst moment is when he attempts to rape her, but it's a premise of the film that "jealousy can drive you mad" and this happens to him. Meanwhile the show he is investing in is doomed to failure because the lead actress is dying.

"Midnight Express" is another movie I've long hated for similar reasons. The guy was guilty! He tried to smuggle the drugs! On his first night in prison, he steals a blanket. He behaves badly in court and enRAB up ranting at the judge. He wants special treatment. I have no sympathy for him.
 
Me neither. Just didn't "click" with it. Rubbish film.



Ok, if you're gonna throw The Shining into the equation I'm really gonna stir things up and go for -
Scarface - That bloody ridiculous accent. "Say hello to my little fwennnddd!" Um, yeah ok Al. Laughed all the way thru it coz of this :D
Goodfellas - No sorry, it's a fine movie but Pesci is about as intimidating to me as Jimmy Krankie. About the same height too.
Taxi Driver - Psychopath? Clarence Boddicker would have him for breakfast ;)
A Clockwork Orange - That crappy unamusing palare they use just makes me want to hurl the tv out the window. Maybe that's the point in a twisted kind of way.
Terminator II - Good movie, but not a classic by any means imo. Lacks heart.

Ok, tin hat firmly in position. Bring it on. ;)
 
I must say I've thoroughly enjoyed this thread.

I actually 'appreciate' most of the films that have been named, even if I haven't enjoyed them.

Revellian....I agree with you and Eraserhead's points about American Beauty. This was a brilliant film, but uncomfortable to watch in so many levels.

But that said, I think any film that makes people uncomfortable or takes them out of their 'sitting eating popcorn' comfortable zone, is bound to receive negativity.

Personally, I love viewing comments on IMDB if a film receives an unusual amount of high or low votes. It's always interesting to see the opposing views. I usually agree with the opposing views of high or low rated films. So I guess I'm just an appreciator of movies and try to understand the machinations and reasons why it was filmed in the first place.

For example, I think City of God is highly overrated because it seemed all over the place IMO and I didn't overly empathise with the characters. However, I appreciate that it is a foreign language movie and a masterpiece in that part of the world. It is also based on a true story which to me was about the only credible part of it.

Whereas Der Untergang, another foreign language movie, was a masterpiece IMO.

4 Weddings I enjoyed (who knew where it would lead ... Hugh Grant having a career), the rest have been poor. I couldn't stand Love Actually, I was surprised at the good reception it got, I thought it was biggest load of cheesy old schmaltz ever -worse than all the sob stories in the X Factor :rolleyes:.
 
Talk about taking it personally!

I had a pal who thought Vic & Bob were the funniest thing on TV, I casually mentioned that I didn't get them. She reacted like I had personally attacked her, honestly she spent the next few hours trying to tell me why I should find them funny, then she started crying.
 
Shawshank Redemption (Not nearly as good a movie as people believe).

Usual Suspects (A good,very well acted movie but that twist ending is a bit too clever to be perfect )

Agree with Silence of the Lambs (Jodi Foster was fantastic but I feel Brian Cox did a much more fitting portrayal of Hannibal)

Would agree with all of them (is Braveheart considered a good film?) except The Shining, I can't even watch the titles without grabbing a cushion to hide behind.

Just like Withnail and I :sleep: Woody Allen leaves me puzzled. I just think it's a lot of one liners strung together, in fact you can almost sense a boom boom, then a slight pause for applause after every line.
 
Watch "Ali". A very good film and Will Smith is uperb.
