Most over-rated films

At the time the 1989 Batman movie. After all the hype when I finally saw it it was a let down. However saying that compared to "Batman Forever" it was a masterpiece - Jack Nicholson was the movie the way he played the Joker but Michael Keaton eclipses Val Kilmer who isn't worthy of the part.

Not seen Batman and Robin with George Clooney but from what I've heard I'm not missing anything.......

Erin Brockovich. After being told by everyone what a fantastic film it was and how Julia Roberts should get the oscar, I thought it was a pile of sh*te and didnt even make the end.

The trouble with an expression like "overrated" is that basically it means "something I dislike but loaRAB of other people like". We all have different tastes and there's little point in arguing that something is bad just because we don't like it.

One man's meat and all that...

You see, I think The Beatles are highly overrated but basically it means that I just don't like them. :)

True up to a point, but when a movie is hyped in the media as being 'sensational' at its premiere, the precritics slip worRAB out, such as 'genius', 'original' or 'groundbreaking', and it turns out to be simply to get suckers onto seats, putting the worms back into the can becomes a mammoth task.

Hi all,
Star Wars... (In fact anything by George Lucas).
Titanic, AI, Terminator 3, Van Helsin, Spiderman 2.
The majority of American comedies (Personally I think the majority are silly, not funny).
My personal favourite film is Bladerunner. Truely ahead of it's time!

RegarRAB,
Overlord.

i'm hopeless - i like a lot of the films mentioned here :

*donnie darko* - just so original, and well done - fantastic.

*shawshank* and *green mile* - great films. i think prison films often are good anyway - perhaps the passing of the time in prison, with denoument of *release* at the end has a certain in built feel goodness.

*la confidential* - i think what was so great about his one, was that it was a brilliant film noir kind of film, that you don't really see too often any more. and i love james elroy's books anyway.

*mulholland drive* - ultimately not that clever a *twist*, but it was so well pulled off it was brilliant - really did wonder *WTF* is going on. and even tho' it still had lynchian wierdness, it was like a great little nancy drew mystery in a conventional sense.

tarantino - i don't think he relies too much on the violence - *reservoir dogs* is great for the sharp dialogue - its really very like a play in that respect. and *pulp fiction* is just so cleverly woven together.

i even liked *titanic* - sure, the dialogue early doors was cheesy as hell, but that last hour, the sinking, and those ulean pipes at the end. its been slagged since, but at the time there were cinemas full of jaws on the floor oh_my_god audiences.

...anyway - over rated films.

#1 on my list would be *battleship potempkin* - sure, its famous for the oft copied *pram down the stairs* scene, and its all just a metaphor for the russian revolution and all - but to me it was a load of old nonsense on a boat.

*LOTR* - beautifully shot, faithful to the books - but three films over ten hours to tell the story of some people getting from a to b, fighting a few bad guys along the way?

It has to be Lost in Translation, Ive never found it so hard to watch a film, its the first film Ive actualy wanted to shot myself in the head to end the pain.

Harry Potter yes, but did Tolkein intend the LOTR series for children? I actually thought he wrote those for adults. Years of study is what resulted in LOTR - Tolkien was a linguist and also studied folklore around the world, all of which helped shape the LOTR series.

Don't you think that sometimes it is nice to put yourself in the shoes of a child, and even if momentarily, take the complications out of life?

Go on, lighten up and give them a go :D

I can't believe no ones mentioned Love Actually yet, its awful.

Virtually every film I've seen this year has been over-rated

I-Robot
Troy
Lost in translation
Spiderman

"shawshank redemption".hated it

"thirteen"-meandering and pointless and trying too hard to be shocking

"big fish" the worst tim burton film i've ever seen

I saw the first LotR film with my mum, I borrowed it off my auntie, because she was going on about how good it was. We watched it. My mum fell asleep half way through, and when she woke up and saw the end, she said "Is that it! We had to watch 3 hours of a film that sent me to sleep just to see them get to their next destination, and we have to watch the other films to see what happens!" It was really boring!
Oh, and I have noticed a lot of you have been going on about Harry Potter. Before I saw the film, I did think that the hype over the books and films was too much, but I saw the first film, enjoyed it and then went on to read the books!
The films, I have to admit, are "kiddiefied" meaning that they are tonned down and the best bits picked out for kiRAB, but the books are so much better! They are not for kiRAB, well the first 2 may be, but the rest are much darker. JK Rowling herself didn't want to read them to her children, it's the media that makes non Potter readers think they are just for kiRAB, read them, and this may change your opinion.
