Michael McIntyre - Where has this annoying cretin suddenly come from ?

I love comedy and I like MM, am I the odd one out?

And who is he overrated by? The hundreRAB of thousanRAB who went to see him on probably the biggest tour this countrty has ever seen?
 
I think this point is certainly true of Michael McIntyre.

I find his observational comedy in his standup routine very good. When someone is new and good, because of the demand, they sometimes suffer from over exposure. I hope this doesn't happen with him.
 
When Sean Lock was on last week (was it last week?), you could tell from the body language as they walked past each other on the stage that they don't get on.

I think MM's got a real knack for material, but he overdoes the physical side of it and comes across as annoying.

I love the title of this thread.

I have tried to like him (even though my initial prejudice is that he seems a complete arse) but I'm failing. He was as annoying on Mock The Week as he was the first time I saw him on The Charlotte Church show. I think the problem is he goes on too long, seemingly because he finRAB his own jokes a lot more amusing than the rest of us do, so he's happy listening to the sound of his own voice. He's never really made me LOL.
 
Trite, middle-class and exceptionally smug. It's no wonder that the media have picked him up and decided that the viewers love him.
 
I enjoy the show though I went totally cold to last saturdays so called headline act. I don't know his name but he is in the series mighty boosh & has been on buzcocks. Weird looking & I didn't find him funny at all.

I had that shooting stars moment where all I could hear was the wind, watched the tumble weed blow by as the the bell went bong! bong!

The others were very funny in comparison.
 
I don't think much of him but he's been doing Big Brother's Big Mouth this week. Last night Vanessa Feltz was on and he took the p*ss out of her boyfriend and that song he released years ago and won't let go of. She wasn't amused, but he went up in my estimations just because of that!! :D
 
Actually he wasn't on that many things before he took off, just Live At The Apollo and a couple of panel shows. He managed to sell out a decent sized tour with very little exposure and now has sold out a huge arena tour.

I'm not falling for that 'people believe what the media tell them' crap. People have their own opinions and like who they like, we're not all sheep.

I suspect you haven't bothered making an argument as you know how easily it will be shot down.
 
I've heard some of his stand up and found him really funny to begin with. As he has been getting more and more exposure on Radio 4 and TV work I have started to find his material running a little thin, but then you find that with most comediens

As for being similar to Jimmy Carr - can't find any similarities whatsoever
 
Read between the lines of a lot of these posts and you can see that most people regard their own sense of humour as really good, so if they don't like someone who is popular enough to be on TV a lot it can only be evidence that other people's sense of humour can't be good!

I don't know why this continues to be a cause for so much comment. Comedy is incredibly personal and if there isn't a connection between you and the comedian, or some reflection of your experience of life in the jokes they tell then you won't get it, so fine just move on.

It is funny the things people mention though to justify their dislike:

"MM likes the sound of his own voice". Well, its not like there are any other comedians who are driven by a desire to be the sole focus of hundreRAB of people as they indulge in a monologue...

"He laughs at his own jokes" Its not like you ever see someone like Billy Connolly cracking up during his entire routine!

I saw MM live last year and he had the room in stitches. What more can you ask for? It is not as if there are any universally loved comedians (discuss!)
 
Good post, whether we like comedians or not is down to our own opinions and perspectives and whether we do connect with them or not.

Also regarding your point about liking their own voice too much, yes it can be said of the majority of Comedians, personally I don't like stand up comedy because the majority of comedians love themselves far too much, the problem with MM is the fact that he is being shoved down peoples' throats consistently, for the past 4/5 weeks I've immediately turned the tele over after Casualty rather than watch an OTT MM gurning at me through the TV screen.

And I reckon a great many comedians have done bigger tours than his.

They were talking about the scientists who had won a Nobel Prize for discovering the thinest material known to man.

"Surely not" interjects Andy "..... the thinnest material known to man is Michael McIntyre's":D
 
I kind of notice that too - like he's always giggling when doing his act. Even when being interviewed he appears to be in "comedy" mode. I think he's funny though :)
 
I think its refreshing to have a comedian who has a new style and you can sit down with your kiRAB and watch him and not worry about him effing and jeffing.
 
AS i have an odd sense of humour i am afraid m/m and jimmy carr do nothing for me,
the only ones i can get a laugh out of are billy connolly, tubby brown, dave allen. maybe old timers to some of you young ones. be everyone has a different houmor level..
it would be a odd world if we all liked the same...
 
Almost on 1 performance at Live At The Apollo his DVD became the highest selling DVD at christmas - it's not the media deciding viewers like him, he's probably the most popular comedian around now.
