Media Player Discussion Thread

I can't speak too technically on this issue....but one thing I really enjoyed about MM coming from iTunes was the very pinpointed searching and tagging.

I also liked being able to browse my hard drive within the program . I don't remeraber this being possible in iTunes...and I was using iTunes on a PC. maybe it was though lol. but I can move files to different folders very fast and add stuff to the library quickly. also I think on a Mac perhaps iTunes is THE program to have...but PC it's nonsense.

I know nobody with PC who uses iTunes, and if they do they are complaining

Long time MM user...but lately the lag and crashes are getting out of hand.
Also, and I've discussed this extensively on their forums, the 'shuffle' does NOT work for all 192k files I have. They can talk math all day but when I hear 3 songs by the same artist in an hour...consistently....something's ****ed up.

So, I've been reading these (mostly old) post here. Things change pretty quick as far as music software goes. There's always new apps starting up and old ones that never get updated and fall away. Think I'll try J Rivers next...their free trial is nice and, although I'll miss MM's ease of search and updating 'properties' of multiple files, J Rivers is quick as ****. And I've been saying for a while that I would pay money to have a fast, reliable media platform for my growing library.

Anyways, peace.

I think I might check this out... Windows Media Player works alright for me, but its starting to lag I get more music, which is especially bad when I'm using my already slow laptop.

Anyone heard of Songbird? They're still working on it, but's it's going to be a really sick program when it comes out. It's built off the Mozilla Firefox Platform. It's a great music player, library, it can sync with your iPod, not to mention a full browser (which is really just firefox). You can download a plugin which used to be standard called Skreemr, where you can search for any music or song you want and then download it right into your library. Just like iTunes Store, but free. It has some really cool plugins such as for music recommendation, not to mention Last.FM support.
I believe the site is getsongbird.com (i cant post links yet :)

i've used iTunes since I got my first ipod (around 5 years now) and have had stints with mediamonkey, songbird, foobar, winamp but have always come back to iTunes. Don't have any problems with it really, so i see no need to switch and figure out another way to sync my iPod.

Yeah, I use iTunes. I think it's a pretty good player, and it's really easy to find stuff in the store, but I think it's really overpriced.

Use foobar

Good shi‎t, doesn't lag and has plenty of customization features and plugins and it's relatively easy to do, has a search function and it'll update automatically and it'd free

Here's the theme I'm using, there are plenty more

do check it out, and remeraber that you can customize it quite a lot so you're not stuck with the mediocre interface new users are presented with.

i have ~100gb in my foobar library - about 14,000 tracks. no lag at all. ever.

WMP actually... i use winamp for onine radio but otherwise it's easier to just use WMP for me as with so much music I can't use any of the library function anyways...

i use and love songbird. it basically takes the good stuff from itunes, makes it way better, replaces the ****ty stuff with really awesome stuff and calls it a day.
it's buggy though and SLOW AS **** when a song is playing, big-time resource hog

but if anyone is ever looking for a new one give it a try, lots of awesome add-on and plugins and features to try

I've used Winamp for as long as I've listened to music on my computer I'm pretty sure...like 7 or 8 years and never tried anything else. Last night I was a little bored though and tried out Media Monkey cause I've heard a few people praise it, and I'm really really likin it.

It does so many things better than Winamp, as well as alot of neat stuff I'm pretty sure winamp never did. It all just feels really smooth too. It did crash on me once last night, but I'm hoping that was just a fluke or something cause I really wanna keep using this now. Also I can't find nearly as many skins as Winamp had either, but that's not a huge deal, even though skins can be pretty cool.

I even bought a couple cheap cd's on amazon today cause one of the startup "tips" MM gives is something like, "Buying CD's on Amazon through MediaMonkey's interface helps support MediaMonkey development." Which is sorta cool I guess.

Maybe I'm just over-excited about something shiny and new, but either way, I'm pretty sure I'll be sticking with this now. :)
