Lip Service BBC Three

Having watched not only the L word from start to finish but both the UK and US versions of Queer as Folk, my partner and I think Lip Service is as good or better than all the above.

The acting on the L word was great. Writing weak, photography poor. US QAF - great writing, weak acting. UK QAF - so/so acting and writing.

We love how LIp Service is more regularly characters (like QAF) -- it's daily life stuff, and they're doing it well!

I too felt Frankie and Cat were Stuart and Vince from QAF - but I see that as a good thing, I loved that 'love story' in QAF. Okay maybe not very original but it works for me.

Frankie is the only serial sh*gger and it is clear she is a deeply tormented human being. I agree the sex was not particularly 'explicit' and it was there to show us who Frankie is. There certainly are women like Frankie - I went out with one (she even looks like her:eek::D)

I don't object to them all being good looking and living in fabulous flats, but do they all have to be soooo thin?

So far, quite good. But not as immediately excellent as QAF.

I happen to think it's just another soap that they wanted to be based women who are gay.

Fallen flat on it's arse as a concept.

Trying to make it work becuase it's about gay women failed.

It was a show about lesbians, what exactly did you expect? Them sitting around in dungarees making jam? This is the 21st century.

I enjoyed it, I particularly liked the character of Tess, I could relate to her (and I'm a straight woman).

So much of this discussion is almost identical to the criticisms of The L Word when it first aired here in the US. Fans were apoplectic about Bette and Tina's threesome with a man in the first episode, and the show was regularly criticized for catering to a straight male audience. I do think there is some of that. However, I also know they need ratings to survive. I think it's a fine line of selling their soul to ensure renewal versus maintaining some dignity and credibility.

I *really* like Sam. I liked Cat far more after episode 2. I don't like Frankie at all - despised the hookup with the thief. Tess - don't put up with bullcrap from even gorgeous women. Lou - hate her.

But I love the show. Enough to start a fansite for it.

Could have been soooo much better but wasn't bad.

Had really looked forward to this as I spent my early 20s as a student in Glasgow chasing women:o

Bit cliched at times, and I felt the Frankie and Cat are just female "Stuart and Vince" from Queer as Folk.

I hope I'm wrong.

PS I wish someone had told me where to get an affordable designer flat.... mind you QAF was the same lol

Well promoters market the same boy banRAB towarRAB teenage girls and gay men so maybe gay women and straight men might enjoy watching certain elements of Lip Service but its still pretty pathetic compared to all the porn out there. Unless we are suggesting that gay women wouldn't like to see shows with attractive women, maybe I am wrong and all they like are documentaries presented by Rhona Cameron and Sue Perkins.
