Haven't been on this thread in a while, these are a few of the films I've watched in the last couple of months, most of them for the first time. Movies like An American In Paris and Bedknobs and Broomsticks are worth a second viewing though :)

Winter's Bone
Sundance festival best picture winner, Loved it, reminiscent of Frozen River. Very atmospheric, understated, and incredible performances. 9/10
 
The Social Network

Very good, interesting film about how Facebook came about and the legal strife behind it. Terrific acting by everyone - Justin Timberlake a revelation. 9/10
 
I ♥ Huckabees

A man campaigning for the protection of open spaces from property development hires two "existentialist detectives" to solve an issue with a coincidence. Interconnections and the nature of suffering become the menu of the day. Nice and intelligent film that was quite funny and touching, too. Good performance from Jude Law, Naomi Watts, Mark Wahlberg and Lilly Tomkin.
 
The Brood

Ollie Reed outstanding in Cronenbergs horror set around mental illness and child abuse. Interesting and effective tho bizarre in places.

Barton Fink

A New York playwright, played by John Turturro, goes against his principles for high art and goes to write a wrestling film in Hollywood in order to make some money. However, it's not as simple as he thinks, because he enRAB up with writer's block... and meets a somewhat larger than life character played by John Goodman. It also doesn't help that although he thinks he writes about the "common man", he doesn't really want to listen to them to really get to know them; he's somewhat aloof and self-regarding. Nicely done Coen brothers film that has a great hallway scene with a raging John Goodman, which itself would make any film proud.
 
Werckmeister Harmonies

Hmm, how to describe this... it's Hungarian, it's black and white, there's an enormous whale in a box, and an evil midget called "The Prince" who we only see in silhouette. And many of the scenes are shot in takes that last in excess of 10 minutes. And it's beautiful and confusing and slow and not at all like Transformers 2.
 
Watched The Mist again last night, the first time I thought it was ok but not that great either. Last night, just for fun, I turned down the colour on the telly, reduced the brightness and raised the contrast untiI ended up with a punchy, black and white image.

It was like watching a totally different film and a much better film. The whole mood and atmosphere of the film was more oppressive and scary.

I later found out that the director actually wanted to shoot in black and white and has done a black and white version.

"True story" of a pair of Danish resistance fighters in 1944. Lots of bungling and betrayal along the way. MaRAB "Le Chiffre" Mikkelsen plays the least psychotic of the pair.
 
A Matter of Life and Death

Fantastic classic of a film starring David Niven and Kim Hunter. Really imaginatively done fantasy love story between an American woman and an English pilot, who fall for each other when the pilot is radioing for help after his plane is hit and is plummeting to earth. He somehow cheats death and finRAB the radio operator whose voice he fell for, but then finRAB out via a heavenly "conductor" that he should have died and has to leave her on Earth while he goes to the afterlife. He objects and demanRAB an appeal, on the basis that Heaven's mistake has allowed the complication of love to get in the way.
 
Vampires Suck 2010 0/10

yeah so does this pile of steaming sh!te. Its even worse than Disaster Movie and Meet The Spartans put together!! save your money and go for an enema instead trust me its more entertaining :mad::mad:
 
The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (Swedish, 2009)

Excellent who-dunnit from the Swedes, choc full of interesting characters, a brooding storyline and much menace. One scene in particular made me cross my legs a few times :D

The Green Zone

Interesting and well paced Gulf War drama with Matt Damon searching for weapons of mass destruction and getting frustrated by the lack of them.
