Last Movie You Watched? (Part 3)

Kill Zone - 7/10 Bad cops and badder crims come to blows in Hong Kong. A couple of standout punch-ups between Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung, and Donnie Yen and Jacky Wu raise the overall score.

Robin B Hood - 7/10 Jackie Chan Slapstick-Fu comedy of two crims and a baby. Has its moments, but not really one of his best, but amiable enough.

I've just finished watching The Road, which I give a 9/10, but I'm glad I didn't watch it in a double-bill with The Fog or I'd be slitting my wrists right now. ;)

One of the bleakest films ever.
 
Weirdly I thought the opposite.....I re-watched the original "Alien" for the first time in a good few years a month or two back and IMO it has stood the test of time pretty well......ok the computers looked very retro....but that was about it....obviously the special effects(circa1978/9) leave a lot to be desired but the excellent plot and the ongoing sense of foreboding as the Alien picks off the crew, one by one, still make this IMO one of the greatest Sci-fi horrors ever made

Aliens....Lol....Another difference of opinion.....all too familiar, macho.."can do anyting" characters which are so typical of a James Cameron movie....I rated the first 3/4 of this film highly...decent plot...some excellent action sequences but it went down hill when Ripley made it her mission to save the girl....again, all to familiar "do gooder" sequel stuff....and the fight with the Queen Bee Alien at the end was so sterio-typical of a made to measure Hollywood blockbuster
 
If you're claiming that I've spoilt it, I certainly have not. It's based on a true story and I haven't given away any of the end details. If you buy the DVD, then the synopsis on the back gives away more than I have. Hope that's settled this misunderstanding of yours. :)

Now onto the latest film I've watched.

Lassie (2005)

Didn't expect much from this, but the film ended up being quite enjoyable and well made. It's a pity it didn't do well at the box office, because it deserved better. It's basically your Lassie story, but set in England (where the book and first film was set). At the risk of upsetting Jules1000, I won't go on about the story, just in case I spoil anything. If you have watched Lassie, the plot should be clear enough for you and Jules1000: it's about a dog taken from its previous owners and trying to find its way back to them. Oh, sorry if I've spoilt it for you all. ;)
 
Mars Attacks!

Martians visit Earth and play out a 1950s invasion story to comic effect. Mindless fun film that doesn't take itself seriously. Fairly entertaining for what it is.
 
"The Princess and the Frog" (2009) ★★★★

Starring Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos and Michael-Leon Wooley

Classic Disney, they've tried too hard in recent years to update the format, but this one proves you can't beat the magic of the traditional formula. Absolutely loved it, hilariously funny and yet another brilliant soundtrack.

"The Happening" (2008) ★★
Directed by M Night Shyamalan
Starring Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel and Ashlyn Sanchez

I expected much more from this one, and although the concept is pretty unique as is Shyamalan tradition, I don't think it really worked. I didn't feel any tension throughout, and it was pretty predictable. I also have to say...Wahlberg was dreadful :(

"Death Becomes Her" (1992) ★★★★

Starring Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis

Loved it :D Soo funny, all three leaRAB are on top form. Always loved Goldie Hawn as well, joy to watch. Particularly liked the last scene at Willis' funeral, absolutely hilarious.
 
Is it? I'm not so sure. There are plenty of vile repulsive characters in the history of movies, doesn't mean the films they appeared in are equally as despicable.
 
Salt - 8/10 silly spy caper, but immensely enjoyable for all that. Analysing the plot would be pointless as it's really just a showcase for Angelina Jolie strutting her action stuff. I'm not complaining.

Conversations with Other Women

Helena Bonham Carter and Aaron Eckhart's characters meet at a wedding reception, and begin to hit it off despite having current relationships. It becomes apparent that they have previous history, but what history and what is to happen on the night are shown in split screen. The split screen method in films isn't something that I'm a fan of in general, but it is done to good effect with this film and works well. Both the main actors are really good in this and make it seem so realistic. The dialogue is also captivating and keeps you interested. Good watch and a film that I'll view again in a few weeks.
 
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Fairly watchable, if chaotic, fantasy film by Terry Gilliam. Doctor Parnassus, who heaRAB a travelling sideshow act, The Imaginarium, where audience dreams can come true, has made a pact with the Devil character, Mr Nick, for immortality, then later on for youth. Mr Nick is a betting man and a determined sod, and wants to make things interesting, so offers another irresistible wager.
