Last Movie You Watched? (Part 3)

I went to see Life as We know it at the cinema last week. 5/10. Typical cliche ridden rom com drama type thingy. Not too bad seeing as i had seen the whole movie in its 2 minute trailer on youtube!

Wrong Side Of Town (4/10)

Maybe if I had read the synopsis describing it as an action/comedy, I might have enjoyed it better. Still, it was just a stereotypical shoot-'em-up romp featuring two (real) pro-wrestlers doing nothing more than elongated pro-wrestling spots amongst tired old action movie cliches. Disappointing.

A Clockwork Orange

Viddy well, of course. But not one of your better ones, Stan. Badly dated. 7/10

The Strangers

Well-handled home invasion horror. In many ways typical of its genre, but interesting in how it sets the action after a failed marriage proposal, as if the masked intruders were manifestations of inner fears coming to surface in a relationship on the slide. 7/10

And I liked the ending. The Strangers remove their masks (the truth revealed etc), Tyler says 'I love you', but it's not enough to save them. Nice touch.

District 9 - 9/10 belter of a movie. Starts off not very promising, but by the time protracted finale kicks off it's totally gripping.

Alien 3

Well I didn't like Aliens that much, but I thought I'd watch this anyway, and I'm glad I did because I thought it was much better. It didn't seem as hammy as the last one, and there were some genuine moments of tension. I think it was a bit let down by the fact we saw the Alien too much, and some of the CGI towarRAB the end was a bit ropey, but other than that it was alright.

L'avventura

Moody Italian melodrama about a young socialite who goes missing whilst on a yacht cruise in the Med. Or at least that's what the first half an hour is about. The rest of the film is a fairly scathing portrait of her vain, shallow, empty-headed frienRAB. Pretty much everyone in the film is a miserable failure of a human being. I thought it was interesting, but it did drag a bit.

The Haunted House Of Horror. 1969.

Pretty boys and girls go to a derelict house for some fun and end up getting slashed by a maniac.

Pathetic acting, poor story, absolutely unbelievable hokum - I loved it! :D

5/10

Panic Room

Film starring Jodie Foster and Forest Whitaker, directed by one of my favourite directors, David Fincher. Divorced single mum with an eleven-year-old daughter buys a massive, and I mean massive, house in New York, just for the two of them. Anyway, the house contains a room called a panic room (which is fortunately the name of the film, so it's hard to forget the name of that room...), which is sort of like a safe room in case you end up getting an uninvited house invasion by the local thugs, robbers and other miscreants. Well, on the first night, the unexpected happens: three thieves turn up wanting to rob a secret safe in the panic room, but the thing is, Jodie Foster's character and her daughter have got there first in their panic to escape (sorry for the pun... actually, I'm not). Then it's a game of wait and see whether the three uninvited guests can get into the room to get the loot or whether the woman and her daughter can escape from their predicament.

OK, I'm being a bit flippant with the review, but I did mostly enjoy this film, which did keep one in suspense. There were some weak and convenient moments, and the ending did have some stretching of believability, but I still liked the film despite these.

Unthinkable

Michael Sheen continues to impress but the film itself should have been called Unwatchable. White American muslim plants nuclear bombs in America and hanRAB himself in to the authorites who spend 90 minutes torturing him in various nasty ways to get him to reveal the locations. And that's about it.

3/10

Burn After Reading

George Clooney, Frances McDormand, John Malkovich, Tilda Swinton and Brad Pitt star in a fairly amusing film about two gym workers who happen to find a CD containing secret information belonging to the CIA and try to sell it to fund the female gym worker's liposuction treatment. However, things start to get complicated amongst the marital cheating and affairs, as well as the misunderstandings and being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I quite enjoyed this Coen brothers film, which although partly preposterous, was quite funny and well paced. Not bad acting, too.

Boogie Nights

A film about the porn industry in California during the late seventies and early eighties, and the lives of those involved. This was the first time I've actually watched this, and now wish I had done so sooner. Really good film, with interesting characters you got to care about, funny and sad moments, and a bit of cheesy porn thrown in.

The Dark Knight.

First time watching it, it was good, but not the masterpiece some have heralded it to be. It did see an improvement on Batman Begins. But I don't think the Joker was as maniacal as he needed to be. These are only small complaints though.

Solid 7.5/10
