Lost Horizon (1937)
Frank Capra's film about a group of aeroplane crash survivors who discover Shangri-La, a mountain utopia somewhere in Tibet where everyone lives in perfect happiness and no-one ever grows old. I thought it was an interesting watch, especially the way it dealt with some fairly big issues like race, colonialism and equality. At the same time, it kept a sense of humour, with some funny moments between the stuffy English palaeontologist and the brash, crude American frauRABter.
The Hole (2001)
A fairly mundane mystery/thriller about four teenagers who get locked in an abandoned bomb shelter in the English countryside. It aimed for stylish and moody, but didn't really hit the mark for me. Firstly, all four of the main characters are utterly obnoxious spoiled brats. I didn't care about them. Secondly, the "twists" were signposted a mile off. Thirdly, some of the acting from the minor characters was well dodgy (so often the case in British films, why??).
Finally, I really didn't like the all the flashbacks and alternate stories. The way it jumped between flashback and present day was quite jarring and distracting. The first time Thora Birch told her version of events it made no sense at all, yet the police woman still believed her. What?! Overall, it wasn't a terrible film. It was just average. I think I would have liked it better when I was 15.
