Is there a film that EVERYONE likes?!

I guess I missed that in the excitement at the end, but that does explain it very well.

I shall go and find another high horse to get on :)

I don't like Toy Story, I thought it was boring. I can see what you mean about the technical advance but CGI animation has always turned me off so it was no big deal for me.

ET I've always hated, and I know other people who think so too (not many, but some!)

I think Shawshank is the closest you're likely to get to a universally loved film but I reckon there are no doubt some dissenters out there.

I doubt today's youth are big on Back to the Future - love it though we might, it's horribly dated in terms of how long ago 1985 seems!

Donnie Darko is fabulous.

The films that always warm the cockles of my heart and that you'd have to be insane or an alien not to adore are:

Rushmore/Royal Tenebaums/ Bottle Rocket

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Grosse Point Blank

and Ghostbusters.

Has nobody suggested 'Meet The Parents' or 'Meet The Fockers'? Great range from Robert De Niro (and Dustin Hoffman in the sequel) when you think of what other (serious or more weighty) classics they've been in. :)

Well, excellent, that's proved that! I thought The Princess Bride is the no 1 "no-one but no-one doesn't like it" film, yet CovertFoofle knows people who don't like it.

89% of critics thought Harry Potter 4 was good (rottentomatoes.com) but they are all staggeringly deluded IMHO. It was, from a storytelling perspective, shoddy. Borderline inept. So for me critical consensus is no guide.

(While I think of it, BTTF - though some elements are dated, again it's the genius core story and sublime storytelling that make this as loved as it is)

So we've proved that there is no such thing as a good film!

In a somewhat obsessive, perhaps pointless, and highly "haven't-you-got-anything-better-to-do" style, I have compiled all the movies thus far mentioned as being potential candidates for being universally liked, and have sorted them into those which are still possibilites and those which have been shot down.

Excellent point. There are hundreRAB, usually thousanRAB of people who vote all of the discussed films 1 out of 10. I wonder if some poeple just like voting this way as a kind of e-vandalism, but I guess a few might be sentient beings with a brain who honestly think these films are meritless.

Even as I typed that I didn't believe it myself. It's one thing to not like a film, but putting 1 out of 10 for any of those films is just bloody stupid. The first film on their top 250 list I actively dislike is probably Psycho (stupid film, really), but I'd never give it a 1 out of 10.

Are people still talking about a film that everyone might like? Just that I saw Forrest Gump mentioned ('scuse me while I vomit profusely) so I wasn't sure if it had gone in the opposite direction.

Love Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind.

Schlinder's List as a film that 'everyone likes'? Eh?

I'm not sure that's quite how Speilberg envisaged it.

I dislike Shallow Hal (although I am a Jack Black fan) and Meet the Parents.....I would imagine I would dislike Meet the Fockers
