Is there a film that EVERYONE likes?!

Patton - my husband must have watched it dozens of times.

I like -
Babette's Feast
Fanny and Alexander
It's a Wonderful Life

ET - Elliott's voice drives me mad
Loved Shawshank Redemption also Green Mile

There's no such thing as a film every viewer watches. The best you can hope for are films that vast majorities of viewers like, or that are almost universally critically acclaimed (even the smaller circle, critics, can't truly be universal).

I have never met anyone who didnt like the Shawshank redemption or Groundhog day. What about

Mary Poppins

ET

THE CHAMP

Escape to victory

I think though that the Shawshank redemption is the best. My grandad my boyfriend my Dad my little sister and myself all LOVE it and usually we dont even APPROVE of each others films!!!

Ditto. Also think that Bill Murray is overrated. He's in the same bracket as Jim Carey and Mike Myers, in that though originally funny they never change their character in whatever film they are in.

This is very good thread, maybe the idea is that we keep putting up ideas, and if one person doesn't like it, then it can't qualify as a film everyone likes.

So far, no one has shot down The Wizard of Oz, and I'd like to add Gone with the Wind.

On a completely superficial level I'd like to add to the debate Pretty Woman (but I won;t be surprised if it gets bashed very soon...).
I don't know how many times I've seen it, but I always watch it if its on telly. A feel good film.

On the films that no one likes, I think that would be even more difficult to pin down.
My pet hates are the Matrix, Lost in translation, Forrest Gump.

Did you check out the director's cut?
There was an entire sub-plot removed from the original about two drunken uncles who had fallen out when they were kiRAB over something or other - it culminated in one of the finest fights in cinematic history.
As for the unconvincing actors I think there was some form of subtext involved there all we were seeing was the wedding we knew nothing of the relationship before and after this one day - I didn't buy that this couple were really in love but then I relised that this may be the point of the whole thing, questioning the assumptions that the viewer inevitably has about the characters.
The special effects were groundbreaking in their day and now they just add to the charm. Besides which there's a prequel coming out soon (Grandmother's Wedding) which is supposedly 99% CGI!

I don't know of anyone who has seen the Princess Bride that hasn't enjoyed it... :)

A film everyone else seems to love that I hate, on the other hand, is Forrest Gump, which is just so wrong on so many levels.

I would say it's impossible to find a movie that everyone likes.

If you look at IMDb, then the most liked movie of all time is, believe it or not, The Godfather, with a rating of 9.1. But no less than 9,200 people gave even this movie only 1 mark out of 10. (A bit harsh i thought, I'd give it 6).
