Is the Nokia N95 really the N73 Killer?

I voted A!

I had a N73. Actually the N73 brought me back to Nokia (coming from SE and Motorola V3). It was a great phone but I do not regret a second buying the N95.
The keypad is much better...and that joystick is gone too. The RF on my N95 is a tad better than my N73 and it was stellar in RF.
I think the N95 is much more refined as the N73 (Keypad/Camera cover/larger display). Added the benefits of WiFi which is a must for me since DATA packages would make me poor here in TO.
So the GPS might be slow....I do not really care. I have it and I can use it if I please. All in one little phone housing. I take pics all the time. The 5MP camera in my eyes is better than the 3.15MP of the N73 and taking videos now is just great since I never actually took my video camera with me.
The less I have to carry around the better.
The N95 fits the bill for me and I do not regret spending the money at all.

BTW....people are asking me how you could ever spend 750-850$ on a phone.
Easy!!!! ;-)

Others has other priorities were they spend their money on and nobody carries a notebook with them whenever they go out.

The N95 brought me back from SE W810i. I have only ever really liked SE's or Nokia's. Always preferred Nokia. I have been through a half a dozen WM devices and they never last more than one month. As a smartphone, the N95 is great. As a phone, its amazing. As a convergence device, its mind blowing.

So for all the negatives, I accept it because I also understand there are sacrifices to cram the technology into such a tiny package at a reasonable price. Yes, $750 is reasonable for something that performs and looks as good as the N95.

People as me how I spend $750 on a phone. Easy, girls buy designer purses for that and us them once a week. I use the N95 all the time. Its the only thing besides my wallet that comes with me everywhere.

After using the GPS for a 30 minute drive today I can say it feels like a fully functional GPS without using any of the pay services. I was quite impressed as the GPS connected within 1-2 minutes in my car and navigated to my old house perfectly.

Improvements would only be minor as there are limitations to a 950mah battery in a phone with this much potential. Perhaps a higher capacity battery where the battery cover door is enlarged for times you just need the juice. I've got a spare 2 days away and for $30 may order another if I feel that 2 isn't sufficient. I've always had spare batteries for camcorders and stand alone digital cameras so I'm kind of going into this with that in mind. If you eliminate any camera usage for a day I'm sure we will see that the battery is strong as an ox. Some long time testers are claiming 6 hours of talk time when nothing else is in use and I would say that's pretty decent.

Perhaps posting a poll question after 2 days of use was premature as I'm now convinced more than ever that it is living up to the hype. It's UI speed is incredible and the adjustments they've made to the fonts in fp1 are great. Many fonts for certain commands and sub menus are much bolder and it creates the illusion that your getting that same monster pixel count as the N80 imo. The standard fonts for the main menus folders are no different though and don't have that super clean appearance like the N80. That being said, fp1 has maximized the pixel count like no other V3 before it and it's extremely pleasing to the eye. My wife (who hates cell phones for the most part...because of me ) has flat out deemed the N95 FN amazing. She's been gone all weekend and I showed her some short films I had made with my daughter and she was simply stunned.......

Hey green i might have to change it to smokes it, if it wasnt for batterly life, as i play and use it more it just excels in every area except battery life, im messing with the video and downloaded some trailers, on phone they are razor sharp and sound quality is amazing, i also played with the gps and i love the service function for looking up restuarants in an area just amazing, truth be told what else is out there thatts close to the n95, maybe u can start a thread like that, we question if its worth the extra dollars but what device has as much and is cheaper, the htyn is still around 699 unlocked i think???

i dont think its a fair competition...since the n95 is the predecessor and its made to be better than any previous model...
and i think the phrase "is X really the Y killer" only applies to phones of different manufacturers...for example the iPhone and some other phone...

Greenie-

Did you use maps or the GPS app? I can only use the GPS and it only tells me if I'm heading N S E W.

Need help man.

I am not sure what the discussion is about. If you have $500 for a phone then the extra $300 should be a drop in the bucket. The people buying a $500 phone and worrying about an extra $300 should not be buying a $500 phone in the first place. This is not a phone for the weak bank account.

That being said I think the N95 is the greatest thing since sliced bread. The GPS and great camera saved me about $500 on buying two separate devices. Individually they are not the greatest but I don't have a stand alone camera or GPS device so having a convergince device that can do it all is woth it's weight in gold.

Just wanted to chip in with my two cents...

I am just suprised that the N95 is mostly being compared with the N73 only.
Another good contender imho is the Nokia N91 8gb edition. Okay..for starters

* 8 GB harddisk !! Now thats a lotta space compared to the 2gigs microsd cards available right now.

*Built In Wi-Fi ..I think this is a major point ..where the N73 pales in comparison. This is one of the features that just rocks if you have a wireless router at home.

*2 Mpx cam . Agreed ..the N73 has a much better cam... But i've been using a N70 for about a year now ...and i'm quite happy even without the autofocus. I mean ..if i really wanted professional snaps ..i would have used my canon ixus. My mobile cam is just meant to be an emergency cam ..and also one that clicks Pictures for my FScaller software. You might argue that the n91 has no flash...but seriously...even though the n70 which i'm using has a flash...the pictures clicked in dimm conditions totally suck.Mobile-cameras are just not meant for low light photos..So having a flash or not is just something trivial..!!

*Excellent Sound quality and A2DP support. Another feature lacking in the nokia n73.Most of us do use our phones to listen to music ..and the n91 is an absolute winner in this dept.

*3.5 mm jack. The nokia n91 has one of these ...but the N73 doesnt.

Considering all these features ..i is clear that the nokia n91 has a much similar featureset compared to that of the nokia n95. Although it is little bulky...but thats the price you have to pay for the awesome storage capacity. It even doubles up as a usb portable storage device when you need one.

One thing the n73 has going for it is the crisp big screen . The n91 screen is similar to that of the n70 ..and even though it might be of a lower resolution i feel it is quite adequate. Frankly speaking ...how much time do we spend staring at our mobile screens to actually lament about the features and size of our mobile screens ?? Its usually a quick sms , a call ..or clicking some snaps. Do we actually watch full feature length movies on it ?? Even if we did...i'm sure the battery would run out of juice even before the movie ended.

Just my own opinion on why the n91 8gb nokia and not the n73 ,should be considered a worthy opponent to the n95 .. )

I did it through maps. I set up a route planner for my house in Ashburn to my house in Centreville and it plotted the route perfectly. I then went out to my car and connected to the satellite within a minute or two. After a few miles I decided to kill the route planner to see what it would do and it just followed along like my gps does in my caddie. I think the best thing to do is to download the maps before you start trying to use it. It took nearly 6 hours to download VA, and MD to my card this time. When the maps first became available I was able to download VA, MD, and WV in 30-40 minutes with my fios 30mb plan. Right now i'm averaging between 18-20 on cable but it sitll took 6+ hours and it was one less state. I wonder if more people are accessing the server due to the launch of the N95. It was painful to say the least....It's really easy once you have all the maps loaded as the app runs so much smoother. Also, the gps never lost signal and I went under a few overpasses.
