I was wondering about that two; however, in the donut shop scene I think Nicjk Fury alluded to there being more out there than just advanced technology, which I suppose allows them to say they never stated that alien/mystical power sources didn't exist; just that Tony Stark and the other characters in the Iron Man movies hadn't encountered them yet.
I thought the film was okay. For me it felt like three big set-pieces, with filler scenes between them designed to push the plot from set-piece A (Monaco) to set-piece B (party knock-down) to set-piece C (the final fight). Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad film but I wasn't completely engrossed throughout. I also never engaged with Mickey Rourke (or Sam Rockwell for that matter), so I didn't care whether they were defeated or not (not that there was ever any doubt about that).
I thought Scarlet was a decent addition, but I found myself wondering what Emily Blunt (the original choice apparently) would have been like in the part. Bringing back Leslie Bibb, whilst a link to the first film, was a bit of a waste of time though, and just served as more filler until we got to the actual driving/fighting scenes.
On the subject of Scarlet, we now have Nick Fury, Black Widow, and Agent Coulson established as SHIIELD agents, and decent-sized characters in the Iron Man films. What's the likelihood of Black Widow or Agent Coulson cameoing (even if just in post-credit scenes) in the other movies slated (Thor, Captain America, Hulk 2, etc.?). Or will it be left to the headliners and Nick Fury to establish the links/continuity between the films?
Overall I give it 3/5. I don't regret seeing it, it's certainly not the worst fil I've seen this year, nor is it the best. It's the sort of film I'd be likely to pick up on DVD as part of a special offer (3 for
