Highly rated films you think are bad

I didn't like Atonement as much as everyone else seemed to. Loved the first act, thought the second and third were meandering and made me lose all interest. And if I hadn't read the book beforehand I think I might have been completely lost as to the entire point of the story.

The Lord of the Rings films. Went to see the first one and hated it; despite that I rather stupidly went to see the second one and, of course, I hated that too. I didn't bother with the third one.

I found Stardust quite boring; the ratings for it were all so good, but when it came down to the plot, it was rather boring and predictable :(

I can't say I find these acclaimed movies bad, just overrated to be honest:-

Lost In Translation
Lock Stock...
Silence Of The Lambs (Manhunter was a better movie)
Monty Python Movies (I don't find them anywhere near as funny as many others do)
Terminator 2 (Apart from the SFX it's nowhere near as good as the original)

I've learned the hard way not to rely on imdb's ratings. I recently rented Costner's "Mr Brookes" because it had an 8 on imdb and it was the biggest pile of giraffe dung I've seen in many a year.

I guess the problem with high scores on imdb is that a film could have a high rating because it has a devoted fan base and/or has been released recently therefore more votes etc. Although obscure films tend to do quite well in the ratings too because the people that tend to watch them are fans of that particular genre.

For me personally, The Matrix has got to be up there in most overated films, think Kill Bill should be up there too, I like Tarantino films, but this one got a little bit too much praise.

Oh and the first Lord of the Rings!!! I was so miserable by the end of it, and there seemed to be so many potential endings and then it would go onto another scene, made me want to cry!

Ghost

Every time Demi and Patrick dance togther at the end i'm rolling my eyes and thinking "its Whoopie you idiot" It ruins the whole film.

Titanic

Totally unbelievable partnership between Kate and Leo. Why doesn't she share the door with him!!!!! Why does the old woman throw the necklace away, selfish old bat.

The English Patient

Yawned all the way through it.

Being John Malkovitch - twaddle, pretentious and just plain boring, I hate films that wear their 'wackiness' like a badge of honour

A Clockwork Orange - I've tried watching it twice and both times, I get to the same point in the film and realise that life is too short to be that bored.
Titanic - I feel asleep.
Pulp Fiction - meh
Momento - same as above
Fight Club - Adults indulging in the adult version of happy slaping.

By total coincidence I have just rented this and have it in my hand right now.

I did get it based on IMDB and blockbuster ratings. I will never learn :(

Sexy Beast.

I can watch Ray in anything, but Kingsley completely ruined this for me, I didn't find him intimidating at all, to me he just came across as a manic and frankly cretinous old man.

The groundbreaking and original, but not actually enjoyable genre.

Not nearly as bad as the ending of the ROTK, that Boyens/Walsh vomit bucket at the greyhavens farewell was just unbearable to watch.
