Highly rated films you think are bad

A Clockwork Orange: like watching magnolia paint dry. Malcolm McDowell was eye-wateringly, arse-clenchingly annoying as Alex. What I wouldn't give to have been able to leap into the screen and batter his skull in with a giant porcelain phallus. "Viddy well little brother" - oh f**k off.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, surely the most overrated films of all time?

Going to go against the grain here, I enjoyed Titanic but one big mistake was the heavy focus on the chemistryless, piss-tedious borefest of an affair between Winslet and Leo Dio. Frankly I couldn't have given a monkey's whether they lived or died and a deep, devilish little part of me was secretly rooting for Billy Zane. It would have been much better if they'd focussed more on the historical aspects and less on their boring f**king relationship. Was glad of the relative lack of "old Rose" though, what an irritating old bag.

Completely agree and if i'm being honest i don't think the effects have been beaten yet. It's still a joy to watch it after all this time. Wonderful story, acting, characters and effects. 10 out of 10 from me.

Sleeper is a work of genius and Love and Death isn't far behind but many of his films haven't aged well.

re: the Coens. The first time I watched Blood Simple I thought it was brilliant, but I couldn't see why Barton Fink got such accolades. Watching them both again the other week I though Barton Fink was superb and Blood Simple was a bit of a shambles. Not sure if that proves anything.

Then I guess the Coen brothers are a acquired taste.

I've haven't seen No Country for Old Men yet so can't comment. But I also liked Raising Arizona and Brother where art thou and was really pleased they won the best Director Oscar

Some highly rated films i dont like

Blowup (1966)
King Kong (1933)
The Matrix (1999)
Jurassic Park (1993)
The English Patient (1996)
Blade Runner (1982)
2001 A Space Odyssey (1968)
Gladiator (2000)

Sin City, the movie it's self is a boring pile of mince... to put it politely. It is nothing short of being rank rotten. It wont be in my collection, ever. Not even for free as it isn't worth it.

Aww I liked This is Spinal Tap - especially the first time I saw it.
It had several laugh out loud moments.

My top overrated films would be

The Sound Of Music and Laurence of Arabia

More recently - American Beauty was really hyped and I thought it was only just OK

Titanic - couldn't wait for the boat to sink.

Top Gun - like a propoganda movie for the USAF crossed with an MTV video.

British movies - MY Beautiful Launderette, The Full Monty, Mona Lisa and East is East - all a bit like TV movies.

Also Mike Leigh's Secret's and Lies. I've liked a lot of his stuff but thought this was badly over acted by Brenda Blethyn

I agree with you about the matrix, I couldn't get into it at all. Jurassic park - I can see why that scored highly, they brought the dinosaurs to life, groundbreaking CGI which still looks good 15 years on.

Hi aj! :D

Citizen Kane leaves me cold and so do Woody Allen films. There are a few other films that I think have been grossly hyped and turn out to be a big disappointment. I found `The Aviator' to be one of the longest, most boring films I ever sat through!!

I'm definitely losing faith in a website where it's users have voted 'the dark knight' number 1 in the top 250 greatest films of all time.

And to top it off....No country for old men which the iMDB users have rated 8.4. - it's a steaming pile of crap.

The Simpsons has such a rich mythology that no film could ever do it justice.

On the plus side though it did gift the world Spider-Pig:D
