Highly rated films you think are bad

I thought it was just me. Absolute rubbish.

Ditto for Scarface.

I also agree with people putting forward the works of Woody Allen.

I also have a hatred of black and white films (even if they are new films filmed in b&w).

Oh - and musicals.

I am a big film fan though.:D

Of the classics, the one that leaves me cold has got to be Some Like it Hot, I chuckled a couple of times but that's about it. Of recent films, Brokeback Mountain and There Will be Blood both didn't do much for me. BM just seemed like a quite average romance and I never really cared about the characters. I was surprised not to enjoy TWBB because I'm a huge fan of the Coen's, or at least of their earlier output

Oh, I don't think Jurassic Park is over-rated at all. Like others have already said; it's absolutely groundbreaking; and I remember going to see in the cinema all those years ago...brilliant.
It's got some fantastic action sequences, terrific acting; wonderful characters. John Hammond is a really great character, and some of his scenes in particular are really enjoyable.

300. Got a 8.0 on imdb.com, but I absolutely hated it. I couldn't get my head around the blatant racism, how badly written it was and the homophobic digs it made (despite the fact that Spartans supposedly regularly engaged in homosexual relationships). Plus it was sssssoooooo boring.

I often look up a film on the IMDB to see what other people thought of it before watching them. If something got near or over an 8.0 (say ... 7.5 or over) you'd think it was a safe bet, right? Well on many occasions I have been both gutted and surprised to be in the minority for what I call sucky films, here's a few (I've listed their current ratings)

Signs (qualifies because it had 8.1 when it first came out, still 6.9 now, it should be 2.0)
House of sand and fog (7.8)
Road to perdition (7.7)
Big fish (8.0)
V for vendetta (8.2)
Good night and good luck (7.8)
Assasination of Richard Nixon (7.2)

That's my load of crap. The majority of these films were non-action and/or had incredibly boring plots. Please feel free to flame me if you disagree.

I remember seeing Jurassic Park at the cinema on it's release, no-one could believe what they were seeing, it was remarkable, no-one had seen anything like it before. For someone to say it's overrated is ludicrous! :D

LOST IN TRANSLATION ( and almost everything with bill murray in lately )..Most over rated film in years, drab pointless and unworthy of any awarRAB .

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
ZULU
THE SOUND OF MUSIC
GONE WITH THE WIND all these films feel like they are never going to end, some people call them epics,i call them epic sh*te.

JAMES BOND FILMS : wish they stopped making these in the 70s.
ANYTHING BY WOODY ALLEN,he has to be the most over rated director of all time.
ANYTHING BY THE COEN BROTHERS
THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST

for me it is Crash- a movie about racism that could only be made by a white middle class american. the script was dreadful, the characters didnt seem real and we were not given any chance to get to know the characters as all they seemed to talk about was how hard it is being black, asian, white [insert ethnic group here]. The worst thing is that this scooped all the awarRAB, where as the tv show, The Wire, which does this kind of thing far better, languishes in obscurity.

i also hated Eternal Sunshine and whatever it is called. Yeah, i know it is trendy to love this film but that doesnt mean it is any good.

Philistine!;);):D - Kane is the masterpiece that the critics say it is.

I agree with the OP that Signs was dreadful. I liked Big Fish, V for Vendetta & The Assasination of Richard Nixon.
The Bucket List was poor. No Country for Old Men was poor (I like all of the Coen Bros. films up to The Man Who Wasn't There). I didn't like Armageddon, which people seem to rave about. The Royal Tennenbaums was awful. Sixth Sense would have been merely OK if the twist hadn't been obvious about 5 minutes into the film. The only bit I like in Jurassic Park is the T-Rex scene (on the other hand, I thought Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World was fantastic from beginning to end - a far superior film) (*ducks*).

As someone who does`nt follow the crowd..I make my own judgements on films...basically I enjoy it or I dont, and then I employ the off button. it depenRAB what your looking for in a film, good acting, effects, musical score, factual etc. I base the below on the fact that they bored the living s**t out of me but they also bought joy to thousanRAB(apparently)

No order of tedium

Traffic
Gone with the wind (not a battle in sight)
English patient
Oh brother, where art thou? (who cares)
Dukes of Hazard (reynolRAB)
Titanic
Lord of the Flies
Pearl harbour

and many more but my brain cell has gone numb

Well I'm a bit too tired to think of any original answers, lol (although I'll be back tommorow) but I'd agree that judging by those initial IMDB scores; Big Fish, Signs and Road to Perdition are all very overated.

Signs was a nice, decent little sci fi film with drama at the heart, but that kind of rating is ridiculous. When you see some of the tripe in IMDB's top 250, and some of the real gems that aren't up there...well, lol.

Big Fish isn't that bad, but to me, it represents that type of film that wavers between the classic it might have been and the absolute catasrophe it could have been. It's not a bad film, but it strikes me as being the kind of film a lot of people think they "should" like, and as such, rate it so highly, probably without ever seeing it.

Road to Perdition is a tricky one. It's a nice film, slick and well acted, but is it memorable...not in my opinion, and I think that's the most important thing. I remember bits and pieces from various scenes, but there's nothing revolutionary about that film, nothing incredible, or fresh or groundbreaking. Not saying a great film neeRAB to have all those qualities, but once again, I think it falls into that category of films people think they should like, based on the subject matter.

I've seen all of those films and really enjoyed them all (except Signs which sent me to sleep)!

One film that I cannot understand why everyone raves about is bl**dy Citizen Kane. I cannot fathom why everyone loves it so much. All the critics love it although i suspect a lot of that is because they look intellectual when liking that film. It's also one of those films that people should like and so people say they do without really watching it. I watched it and boy do I wish I hadn't.

Quite frankly I find it a bloated, boring mess and a monumet to Orson Welles ginormous ego. It's too long and far too self-important and I by the end of it I couldn't care less what Rosebud is. The characters were all appalling and quite frankly whoever was editing did a bad job. How it won an Oscar for screenplay I'll never know but having say through it I know why Orson Welles career took a dive afterwarRAB!

Rant over!

I liked Fargo but preferred Blood Simple, the first movie I ever saw by them, a really suspensful black comedy film noir. I liked the Big Lewoski too, but wasn't that impressed with Brother Where Art thou. I like the characters in their movies though and the fact that they are very off centre. I think some of the scenes in the Sopranos might have been inspired by the Coen Brothers (The Russian episode for example) and the general look of the show.

All of Wes Andersons films are overrated.

They all annoying equally, with their pretentiousness and smug air of self satisfaction.

He's not half as funny as he thinks he is.

Plus he tenRAB to use the same actors repeatedly. Owen Wilson: never has an actor with so little
emotional range been so overused.

I would not say these films are bad, because they are not, but some of the films I have not really liked which have been highly praised include:

1. 2001: Space Odyssey
2. Brokeback Mountain
3. The Piano
4. Crash

I think this year's award winners and nominees were highly over-rated:

There will be blood
No country for old men
The bucket list
I am legend

I was disappointed in all of them and have seen other movies that entertained/scared/shocked me more than any of this lot

I'm not taking away anything that they have been acclaimed for.....but they were still a huge disappointment when I finally got to view them. :(

I know many will strongly disagree, but I'm probably hard to please. :o

Forrest Gump

How it swept the oscars ahead of Pulp Fiction i dont know

The English Patient..very well acted but far too long and very dull.

Titanic..Kate Winslet was great, but only worth watching for the sinking of the ship
