Favorite Opening Scenes?

Perhaps the FF Phantom got your post - it sucks, but it does happen.

And I have to agree with The Player (one of my all time favorites) - isn't it supposed to be the same as the long tracking Orson Welles shot (they mention it in the film, itself), Touch of Evil?

I dont know if this counts as it`s more of an opening scene for a character than the movie:

Johnny Depp in Pirates Of The Caribbean, we first see him on a boat thats sinking then as he approaches the dock he puts his foot out and stands on the dock just as the boat disappears under the water.

i thought that was a funny opening even if it were for a character rather than the movie, i dont or cant think of any funny opening`s for a movie at this time sorry.

I'd have to say Scream. The Drew Barrymoore opening will always remain one of the scariest openings of any horror film(IMO, ofcourse).

How about Swordfish? The opening kicked ass! I loved John Travolta in it and the whole friggin' explosion!

Urban Legend has a phenomenal opening scene for a lesser movie (in bigger terms, but the movie itself is pretty decent, and I have it on DVD  ).

Chicago like someone mentioned. If that's not attention grabbing, I don't know what is! Great number, great scene in general.

Forrest Gump it's so classic. And it sends the movie on on its way ever so smoothly.

Blade & Blade II wonderful and innovative.

Trainspotting is my favorite opening. It's just put together so well. It sets up the whole movie, and it movies fast. I love Mark's vocie over to, the "chose life" speech. I also love Chicago's openning, going into Roxie's eye. Moulin Riuge is great to, it just takes you into this other world, a world where people break out into song.

I definitely agree on The Others. When Nicole let out that scream I jumped out of my seat.

The Breakfast Club has a good opening too.

i love the begining to pirates of the carribbean. not really the opening but when jack sparrow comes in on the boat that sinking, also queen of the damned when lestat is talking about his life at the start

For me, one of the best opening scenes in a movie is with X-Men 2: The way they introduced Nightcrawler for the first time. Absolutely brilliantly done.

that sounds like a funny opening.

I love the can-can song in the Moulin Rouge credits. I feel so bad for Christian though b/c he's so depressed and lonely. I do like how the beginning of MR is seen again later on but instead of being all dreary and sad it's happy and colorful.
I don't remember the beginning to Baz's R+J. I saw it a long time ago.

Yeah Cry-Baby is awesome. Just in the opening credits you get a feel for every character while they are getting their polio vaccines.

The Scream movies have great opening scenes. I think they are probably the scariest scenes in the movies.

The Philadelphia Story - I just love this opening scene, Katherine Hepburn throwing Cary Grant out the house and then Cary Grant pushing Katherine Hepburn to the ground, not hitting or punching but forcing her down by pushing his hand on her face forcing her to the ground. All of this without a word. Brilliant.

American Beauty - Set up the whole movie, finding out the ending at the begining, knowing whats to happen, waiting to find out why and who did it.

Scream - Scared the crap out of me, gripped me from the get go, definately my favourite horror opening ever.

Also loved Heathers - Showing the audience the cruelty of these girls, Kill Bill and Memento

Funny, I just popped over here to read the updates and to read my previous post on this page and I can't find it. Never mind, I shall share my favourite opening scenes with you once more!

The Player. An homage? Probably. It's a great tracking shot, and I love all the film references. The whole film is great, and it's such a top start.

Goodfellas. The editing, voiceover and whole tone of the opening just set the scene for the next couple of hours. This is no glossed-over Mafioso movie, these guys mean business.

And I can't remember any more that I wrote about. It's too early, I shall return.

I love "Lion King", "Forest Gump"... and I can't think of anymore right now

Newsies- It has this really cool voiceover about the newsies with all these sepia toned pictures of them that come on to the screen and kind of blend together.

Nightmare Before Christmas- I like the voiceover and the Holiday trees.

The Boondock Saints- This movie is awesome in its own right but the opening is excellent. It starts of in a meat packing factory and one of the main characters is helping a new worker and says something is the rule of thumb and the worker(who is a woman) explains that it was in the 1900's it was okay for a man to hit his wife as long as he used a stick no wider than his thumb and the main character goes "Can't do much damage with that, maybe it should have been a rule of wrist." She of course kicks him in the junk but its still hilarious.
