Favorite Opening Scenes?

Thirteen - So messed up! The first shot of Evan Rachel Wood is the perfect one to set up the rest of the movie.

Memento - God. This opening is so brilliant. I think it's my favorite.

same here

as for scream 1 & 2 -- the opening scenes were way better than the movies really!

I want to agree with "When a man loves a woman"

Oh, Andy did awesome. Plus, I would love to do that someday, if I ever get married

For some reason I really love the opening scene of When A Man Loves A Woman (Andy Garcia & Meg Ryan). Meg's character is sitting at a bar - this guy is attempting a conversation or something and she's not really responding - then Andy's character comes in and approaches her with some lame pick-up story, to which she climbs on top of him and passionately kisses him (with everyone in the bar watching them). You suddenly catch on that they're a couple when he asks her, "Did the cably guy come?"

Ahh, I know. He's an enchanting personality, from the get go you have to look at him and think about what he's saying. It is truly wonderful.

has anyone here ever seen crybaby? that is a fantastic opening scene. it's so cheeseball 50's bubblegum angst (weird combo, but what can you expect? it's a john waters film). plus, johnny depp with a sleek 50's do and leather jacket... hot.

I love the beginning to Bring it on too, Vic. I also really enjoy the beginning of Baz's Romeo and Juliet.

The Lion King was awesome with the great dramatic effect. I still get the warm n fuzzies when I hear that song. Almost Famous had great music with it too. X-Men 2 was completely over the top full of action, and I loved every minute of it.

X-Men 2...great opening scene w/ Nightcrawler taking over the White House.

Grease & 2...liked the "Back to School" song and dance in the beginning.

i just have one:

THE BREAKFAST CLUB -- with all the kids coming to detention and there is a voicover of the Michael Hall

its just brilliant

Titanic: It gives me chills everytime.

Gone with the Wind: Scarlet and the Tarleton twins on the front steps of Tara. It's such a cute scene and you immediately start to understand Scarlet.

The Godfather: Brando's meeting in the opening scene, on the day of his daughter's wedding. You can't take your eyes off him.

The Believer: Ryan Gosling's opening scenes on the subway and the flashbacks to his childhood. Really powerful.

For the most part, I like opening scenes that grab me, or make me immediately take interest in what I'm watching.

The Matrix
- Grabbed me right away, had me saying "whoa". The very first fight scene with Trinity and then watching her escape the agents. Cool as hell.

star.gif
Pirates of the Caribbean
- Like the opening with the young Elizabeth singing, and how the scene just faded into view like it was coming out of the fog.

Lord of the Rings
Basically an overview of the movie, but I still thought it was well done.

Shrek
Just plain funny. Starts off like a perfect fairytale then you hear the toliet flush.

I know there's more but that's all I can think of for now....

Ooh - good thread idea!

Well, I LOVE the credits from Delicatessen - that's just sheer brilliance.

And of course, you have to love the James Bond series - they've set the standards for action films.

Some of my favorites -
Wings of Desire
Much Ado About Nothing

Both of these because of the use of dialogue, with nothing but the printed word on the big screen, and a single voice intoning those words.

Apacolypse, Now
Because it starts with The Doors' "This is the End," and it really is, beginning with the final sequences of the film, and these surreal explosions of Napalm at night.

The Wedding Singer - shuddup!
It's cute, with a wedding scene that cracks me up every time.

Jesus Christ, Superstar
The bus scene, which it ends with, as well, but withou the actor who plays Jesus. Plus, they do all their warmups, and a dance sequence. Fade to Judas on the hilltop - again, brilliant, and very well choreographed.

Oh, so many films, so little space to write! I'll have to come back with more...

I saw this topic on another board and was interested in knowing what other people's favs were. Mine are
The Sound of Music I love how the camera is going through the mountains and then the audience sees Maria coming up a hill and she bursts into song.
Chicago the opening sequence is my favorite part of the whole movie. I love the song All That Jazz and how the 2 scenes (Roxy/Fred and Velma singing) are put together
Charlie's Angels They both start out with great action scenes.
Trainspotting It's great how the audience sees Mark running away and there's a voice over explaining his actions. I also like how all the characters are introduced in that 5 minute or so scene. You know right from the beginning that it's a great movie.
E.T. It's dark and sort of suspensful because you're not sure what's going to happen. I love E.T. The beginning makes me sad but if he wasn't left on Earth there wouldn't be a movie.
