Favorite Opening Scenes?

You have NO idea how much I love this opening. I've watched it a billion times and Every. Single. Time, I get shivers. It's a kick butt, awesome opening. PJ nailed it!

The Sound Of Music: Julia Andrew's voice echoed through the green hill- it's a classic!

The opening scene of the first Charlie's Angels was cool.

"Crazy bastard?"
"You mean, crazy bitch!"

Classic.

Ten things i hate about you- the opening credits is funny and the song about bad reputation by joan jet is a appropriate.

A knight tale is cool, the mealding of the old with the new, which is a theme that is repected again and again it the movie.

Meet Joe Black - I think this is one of the most interesting and refreshing opening scenes for any movie. Two people just sitting, meeting, having a cup of coffee... you could have just followed them around for 2 hours in this movie, and it would have been fine.

its the only scene I can think of at the moment that hasnt already been mentioned.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring had a great opening, the voice over of Cate Blanchett explaining things was well done, the imagery etc.

I agree with a lot of the ones already mentioned like Girl, Interrupted, I thought it was brilliant how you really can't know what's going on until you get to that part near the end of the movie.
I also like Bring it on, it's just funny.
And Igby Goes down, it totally draws you in.

The three that came to mind when I saw the thread title:

Kill Bill - It's so jarring. The gunshot scares the crap out of me EVERY time even though I know it's coming. And the music is perfect.

Fight Club - Excellent music, excellent reveal of Ed Norton with a gun in his mouth, excellent opening line. Love this movie.

Scream - Have you ever heard a creepier voice in your entire life? This scene was really scary and killing off the biggest star early in the movie was a nice throwback to Psycho.

yah, pirates of the carribean was hilarious.

he sure had a lot of dignity despite the sinking ship!

Yep, Robert Altman wanted to pay 'homage' to it. I love the film references too, and the delivery boy!

Delivery Boy: Hey, you're Martin Scorsese!
Other man (don't know who he is, sorry!): No, but I know Harvey Keitel.
Delivery Boy: Of course you do! Hey, I loved Cape Fear!

I also forgot to mention two other favourite openings. Magnolia, the 'this is not just a matter of chance' opening, where you learn about the improbable fates of three people, and have a rapid introduction to all nine major characters, while Aimee Mann's 'Momentum' is playing.

Secondly, The Nightmare Before Christmas. Dark, wonderfully animated, it's got Tim Burton written all over it.

I have to agree that Scream has a great opener...that's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Scream. It really sets the mood and is incredibly creepy..

There are so many fantastic opening scenes, and all of the ones I was thinking of have pretty much already been mentioned so I'm being redundant, I apolgise.

The Matrix & Reloaded - both action-packed scenes that leave you breathless with excitement and anticipation. What was going on? Was Trinity going to survive? When I first saw the police chase after her, I had no idea if she was good or bad so I went for the police as they are usually the 'good' characters and I was so surprised later on. Still is my favourite movie, probably.

The Sound Of Music - what a fabulous, sweeping beginning! Nothin' like Julie Andrews spinning around on a hill singing about how the hills are alive with the sound of music.

The Lion King - even though it's a Disney movie, I honestly think it has one of the best openings ever, the animation, lighting, score is just so brilliant and so beautiful, sets the movie up perfectly.

Scream - God, to this day, whenever I see this I'm scared sh*tless.

When the killer slashes her throat and leaves her insides hanging inside out? *shudders* I was afraid to answer the phone home alone based on this scene!

Mentions also for X2 (Nightcrawler rocks!), Star Wars (I always get chills when the theme booms out and you see the scrolling words) and James Bond. (looking down the barrel of a gun? Genius. The Bond theme never fails to thrill me too.

Must also give a shout-out to the title sequences of each movie as well, The Spy Who Loved Me is a personal favourite of mine.)

Oh, and I loved Grease and Shrek too.

That's who I feel, and in this created world they can brake out into song.

I'd defiantely have to go with Scream. The second and third were scary, but the first one killed it. Killing off Drew Barrymore in the first five minutes f your movie, now that's the way to get the people's attention.

Lord of war was really good. Star Wars: A New Hope I have to say has probably the best opening scene ever. Although Saving Private Ryan's Normady beach scene is certainly a doozie.

I think the trainspotting opening is cool too,and also I love the opening of a knights tale opening.
