ExpressVu Receivers and HDMI

I thought I'd ask the experts...What are Bell's intentions for receiver technology over the next year or so? Should I hold off buying a 9x00 and wait for Bell to come out with a receiver with better HDMI support and more PBR features?

Huh!
the 9200 alway had HDMI, what do you mean about rumors it may be introduced?
Anyway, as far as new hardware, Bell doesn't make any, just puts their name on Dishnetwork stuff, so, if you pay attention to Dishnet, you'll know whats coming, lagging buy a few months.

I get 5.1 off the digital output(optical) on my 6100. Of course the 6100 would not support any adio through its, DVI to HDMI adapter since there is no audion in DVI.

I was under the impression that HDMI did not support 5.1

I'm about to purchase a new LCD TV with HDMI but guess what my 6100 does not have one but claims to be a HD box, can anyone clarify this?

It feels like I got screwed, maybe I shouldn't panic but it seems only the 9200 has HDMI, should I get something else or run component and not care.

My only issue is that I will get a tv with hdmi which I cannot use, feels awkward thats all!

Any remark on this, do you agree with me or am I missing something here.

The current 9200 is great...the only issue that HDMI has is that it requires you to run a optical digital cable which is no problem.

I have the same problem, just started about 3 weeks ago, I could fix it by wiggling the cable, but now all i get is a black screen. I have a 9200 and a Pioneer pdp 424 plasma. Now I have to change the component cables between the dvd player and tv as this tv only has one set of component inputs. I hope they fix this. Was there an firmware update recently that caused this??

maybe you are talking about the HDMI port. I am talking about the HDMI spec.

9200 only support 5.1 from dig. optical output. The HDMI gets sent I think as DD2.0 or possibly DPL.

Other devices like a DVD player do support 5.1 from the HDMI port.

You can continue to run component video - there is nothing inferior about CV and it IS HD. Or you can upgrade to the BEV 9200.

See the Digital Home FAQ (under help) "DVI/HDMI Information" (point 2, etc).

You seem to be asking a lot of questions in recent posts that are discussed in the FAQs. Please read them first, then ask questions.

6100(6120) has DVI and optical output (no DVI cable supplied)
9200(9220) has HDMI and optical output (DVI to HDMI cable is supplied)

Last week I had an Expressvu dish and a 9200 PVR installed. I am running it in 'single mode' connected to a Sony KDL46V2500 TV. I have the supplied HDMI-DVI cable with the DVI-HDMI adapter installed, plus an optical digital audio cable between the PVR and a Yamaha receiver.

Anyway, right from day one we have had problems with the sound dropping out. Just short, one sentence gaps in the sound. Sometimes we'd notice it a lot, othertimes we'd watch a whole movie and never hear it.

I dug through the threads and FAQs here, and although I didn't find anyone else reporting exactly the same problem, I came to suspect the HDMI connection. So today, I pulled the cable and swapped it end for end. No change. Then I hooked up the component cables that came with the PVR (plus a right and left sound cables) to the TV. Problem goes away when we watch over component.

So when the signal comes over HDMI, we get intermittent sound drop outs. When the signal comes over the component, no drop outs. Armed with this info, I call Bell support, reboot the machine a couple of times, and then get put on hold until my call gets dropped. I call back and learn that this "is a known problem with the 9200 and HDMI" and they "are working on a software fix". And they have no target date for the fix. This second CSR seemed to know of the problem right away, as soon as I described it to him.

The good news is the picture quality on component looks comparable (to me) to the picture quality on HDMI. The bad news is that the sound quality through the TV is much poorer (quieter and flatter), particularly on the SD channels.

Anyway, I'm posting this mostly to help others who might run into this in the future. And if anyone thinks I missed something or if there's something else I should try, please feel free to chime in!

thx, john a

People please realize that this is NOT an HDMI issue. HDMI handles DD5.1 just fine, however, some STBs do not properly send DD5.1 signals out the HDMI port (9200, SA8300HD with certain firmware, etc)

I have my 9200 similarly set up, but only to the tv. When I change channels I usually get a sound drop out for a second but not thereafter. May have happend thereafter for a second or so a couple of times but that's all.

Why is that? I run the 9200 via HDMI to my receiver and receive audio no problem. Is there something I am missing here?

Thanks.

I'm sure the 6100 has a DVI port. You just need an inexpensive DVI to HDMI cable to connect to a television with HDMI only. Or, you can use the component interface.

I run a DVI to HDMI cable out of my 6100 to my Panasonic and run a couple RCA audio cables. Works just fine.

My HDMI doesn't work at all....just had a 9200 installed last week, and it's like the HDMI isn't even there. I was on the phone with Bell, and after about 30 minutes they finally mention that they're having problems with the HDMI outputs. Works fine with component though....been having lots of sound dropouts on TMN-HD and MPIX-HD though.

It is supplied as an HDMI to DVI cable with a DVI to HDMI adapter. (I believe that any DVI/HDMI or HDMI/DVI cable can be used both ways.) It is better to buy an HDMI/HDMI cable since the DVI connectors on the supplied cable are quite bulky.
