ExpressVu Receivers and HDMI

I don't know if you guys knew but it is a known software issue with the 9200. For some people, HDMI just doesn't work. Others get an intermittent black screen. For others, it will work just fine. It depends on your TV.

As indicated by Q's excellent response above, you are not receiving a DD5.1 signal, even though the two channel signal you receive can often be processed for surround sound (Dolby Pro Logic), it is not the discrete surround afforded by DD5.1.

Ah - thank you. To be honest, I never noticed. I guess DPL II always kicked in.

Thanks for the quick response.

You could get a DVI to HDMI converter, but sound will need to be connected separately as DVI does not support it. Component gives a HD picture that looks great.

^ This guys is right. My TV's HDMI won't work with my Bell ExVu dish at all. I get only a black screen. I know it's not my TV as I have used HDMI devices with it in the past. When I called Bell for the 3rd time and was sent to "second level tech support" they told me it was a firmware issue and was supposed to updated by the end of February.

MY TV is a Sony KDFE60A20 - Here's a link

i use an HDMI cable from my 9200 to my Plasma...i also have an optical audio cable from my 9200 to my home theatre system.

I just got a 9200 and had a 6100 (dvi out) to a Sony LCD Projection (DVI in only)
I notice that the 9200 has an adaptor cable and a hdmi to dvi complete cable.
Can both of these be used to go from my dvi only tv to the hdmi out only 9200 ?
Which is better ? Initially I have just grabbed the little converter and it seemed to do the trick.
Thanks.

Great did not see a dvi on my 6100 but if you all say its there I will look at it better next time, great to hear this, thanks!

I have HDMI issues as well. (TV is a Sony KD-34XS955) I spent far too long on the phone with tech support before they told me that it was "a known issue with the 9200." I already knew that from these forums, but their first tier support people didn't...

I hope they get the update resolved by the end of February. I haven't tried an aftermarket cable yet though...it seems that most people use the supplied cable with the DVI adaptor.

I found the little converter cable would not work for me and had to use the complete cable.

basementgeek - I did try another cable... a $65 dollar one at that and no dice.

I'm hoping that with the new update my HDMI will finally work. I don't use it for sound so any of the issues that people are having with it dropping sound isn't a problem for me. I'm just hoping the picture actually shows up this time! *fingers crossed*

My 9200 is presently connected with the component cables supplied in the box, which I assume are at the low quality end. Anyone have comment on what HD improvement might be expected if I was to spend maybe $100 on an HDMI cable? I do not have surround sound so no audio issues here.

I have a different problem. My HDMI connection does work however, my CV produces a much brighter and more colorful picture than HDMI.
I have ordered a new HDMI cable and will try that.
Any suggestions?

The converter DVI-HDMI cable should be the best choice depending on the quality of the cable. The converter plug adds an extra connection which could increase signal loss and be another point of failure. Again it all depends on the quality of the converter.

Didn't your 9200 come with an HDMI cable? Mine did. You shouldn't need to spend $100 on an HDMI cable unless it's an unusually long run. Shop around and buy one of the less expensive ones. You can always return it.

yes, it came with supposedly DVI and HDMI adaptor but, like I have read in previous posts and just checked after this initial post, I get sound as well so works as HDMI. It's more that I feel the HD is not as 'stunning' as I saw in places like Future Shop before purchase and, assuming this is a base cable as these things usually are when they come with the hardware, I wondered if a more expensive cable would move the picture a bit further along towards what I first saw in F.S. Also, contrary to what I have read on cable types, I don't see a difference between the supplied HDMI and component.
