EXORCIST IS NOT SCARY!!! o.o

That would be the documentary that appears on the 25th Anniversary edition - The Fear of God.

It was edited for the BBC broadcast and UK dvd and although the US dvd is 50% longer it too has footage missing that appears on the UK version.

Some of the scenes added later were on that dvd in a deleted scenes section and the writer and director have a commentary where they come up with some logic as to how at least one of the scenes could be put back in.

Your Friedkin comments may also have come from the commentary present on the original disc

Personally, I thought it was an alright film, but I didn't find it that scary.

I've been advised to read the book it was based on.

Not fully in agreement to be honest; modern horrors rely far too heavily on effect rather than substance.

What was the last modern horror based purely on suspense?

ANyhow I wouldn't classify The Exorcist as 'horror' as such.

I agree with those who say it probably has more of an impact on those 'of a certain age' or those who were aware of it coming out in the 70s..

I could imagine some of the effects today would appear comical to some, but the premise of being possessed is quite scary, and even though I was able to watch it years ago, I cannot now for some odd reason. Impressionable perhaps.

One thing I cannot look at is that FACE. You know which face I'm talking about lol. I wont even click on a link.

What would you class it as then? Because as far as I can see The Exorcist falls just about as firmly into the horror category as you can get.

Indeed. I thought it was a hoot when I watched in as a 12 year old with my folks - our first ever video rental. Watched it again relatively recently and I thought it was dreadful.

When it first was shown here in Dundee in 1974 I wanted to go and see it but I heard about people being possesed after seeing it and priests waiting outside some of the cinemas up and down the country just in case any film goer need an exorcism after watching it.
One of my frienRAB went to see it at the time and said it was funny. I decided to buy the book instead and it was a good read. In fact I read the whole thing straight off. Couldn't put it down.
It wasn't until 1980 and a rainy day in Blackpool during a holiday that I went with a friend to the cinema to see a double bill of The Exorcist 1 and Exorcist 2 "The Heritc".
We caught the middle of the second one and I found it scarey. When Exorcist 1 came on I was just scared shitless. In fact so scared I was that I found it hard to sleep for the next few nights.
Must have been a couple of years ago one of my daughters had bought a dvd of the film and I remember saying to her that I didn';t want the film in the house but she persuaded me to watch it again.
This time I didn't find it scarey at all. In fact not in the least and looking back wondered why the film had had such a reaction on me?
There was a lot of hype around at the time when the film came out. In fact a cinema back in the nineties in Perth were showing the remastered version of it and all the lights in the cinema blew. The film it is said that when it was being made in 1973 that a couple of people working on it lost their lives.

I watched this when it was first released. Outside nuns were giving out pamphlets in case you thought you were possessed :D

A few girls did pass out and had to be taken out but IMO it was just hyped, I found it funny rather than scary. When her head spun round I could not stop giggling and got told off :o

The scariest film for me was "The haunting" ( I think that's what it was called? ) it was black and white and you never really see anything just shadows.. but I was scared to death almost  :D

I think I have the wrong film ( Haunting) The film I'm thinking of is a normal house with a normal family. You keep seeing this creepy shadow move across the walls. at the end the family are at a BBQ in a forest thinking it was all over but then you see the shadow again. Does anyone know the name of this film?

just like 95% of all horror movies really, but i guess it was back when it was first released, i always found it more amusing than scary

Well, I enjoyed the film when it was released and on subsequent viewings I still enjoy it.

The follow up Exorcist (The Heretic??) was absolute crap.

Does anybody know why the Exorcist was banned on VHS for years? It was available, but then it was pulled and wasn't available for quite a few years.
