In the defense of Nena:
Well, after some time to cool off. I actually took Nena's death harder than I thought. I actually cried! I didn't even do that when
. I took it so bad I couldn't even make snaky comments for Rave Master.
Anyways, it aoppears that my iniital hypothsis was correct. In the episode, Nena stated that she was created to fight. And after doing some research, I discovered that Nena was , in TV Trope speak, a Tykeborab.
To put it basically, a tykeborab is any person conceived (sometimes literally) and trained from an early age to fight and kill. They're basically Child Soldiers in extremis.
These characters pop up in scifi often. As a result, I've developed a sense of compassion for such characters. Sure, they are trained to kill and not feel remorse. But they are victims themselves.
My heart also goes out to them because such characters end up being shunned by the fans, despite their extraordinary circumstances.
If Nena was a bratty teens who lived a normal life, lived in luxery and decided to kill people for the heck of it, sure I'd hate her guts too.
However, this is not the case. Nena was conceived as a weapon, and trained to be a killer, who is a stranger to humanity.
Does it excuse what she did? No. But at the same time, she probably has no idea of what right and wrong is, or even of remorse? How can one be responsible for what they did if they have no idea of whats good or bad?
It's fine to dislike a character based on their crummy personality or their actions. But sometimes even fans have to realize that some characters have different circumstances beyond the normal. Otherwise, fans just come off as jerks who base their ideas on feelings and not on logic.
