Ok, so having the female cast take over would be too much of a risk, and would be contradictory to some of the characters. But it would have been interesting, and unexpected.
The problem is that they didn't develop it enough.
Alright, there is a limit to how many fights you can have in a series. Lucikly Gundam is only 50-episodes at most, so they can't have half-year long fights.
Except for one meeting, Setsuna and Ribbons don't really make awesome match. There's no sense of tension, no sense of masterminRAB dueling it out, nothing that builRAB up an epic final battle between the two characters. It just seems that it could have been done alot better.
I will say the only good thing was that Setsuna and Ribbons effected their own vision of the world. But it seems that each one treated the other as an abstract ideal more than an obstacle.
Mostly because Heero and Zechs were alot more fun to watch. From the get go, you see these two guys building up to a final showdown. They do fight, but not so much that it becomes tiring. Both were similar and yet different, their personilities matched and yet clashed. The fights were fun and reltively short. And when the fianl battle came, it at least delivered the action.
Sure, it the characters were underdevloped, but it dosn't subtract to the mythic feel to the rivalry.
It made for an okay story. However, it could have been done much better. By having a four year skip, I think they wasted perfect opprounity to develop the story and show the changes much more gradualy. It just seems like Season 1 was rushed, looking back.
The other option was to take the story in a radically different direction. Sure, it could still be about Gundam, but they could have taken it to other directions. The show shouldn't feel like a world we've seen a million times already.
