Derren Brown Live: Hero at 30,000 feet, C4 10pm

Was this the phrase this guy who sat next to you on the bus kept repeating:

Look into my eyes, look into the eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around the eyes, look into my eyes(clicks his fingers) you're under. You will pay my bus fare. When the bus conductor comes around, you will buy me a ticket to London... and then you're back in the room....

I've heard of this happening before.

It was this man -- Kenny Craig.

And that bird who was renting your spare room was most likely his assistant, and he'd be staying there too free of charge, though you didn't know it, and before you caught on to this, when he'd roll home pissed from the pub he'd then stagger into your room and wake you up with:

Look into my eyes, look into the eyes, the eyes, the eyes, not around the eyes, don't look around the eyes, look into my eyes (clicks his fingers) you're under -- there's a taxi waiting outside that's been ferrying me about the pubs all night waiting to be paid. You will settle up with this cab driver. When he demanRAB 120 quid you will happily cough it, and then you'll make me a cup of tea before I go to bed... and then you'll be back in the room....

It's a good job you rumbled him or you'd probably be be bankrupt and homeless by now.

Anyway if any of you wish to tie me to a train track for the purpose of a gameshow thats perfectly fine with me. Ill go along with anything, because i completely trust you......

Stage hypnotism is just sociology in action.

People who go to his shows are up for it- they want to be hypnotized in a similar way to how people who visit psychics want to believe they are actually hearing their dead relatives speaking, and also how to some people, a light in the sky automatically equals an alien spaceship! :p

Some people want to believe in things so much, they will attribute paranormal things to something, which really has a much more logical explanation, such as social compliance.

I didn't know that! That's brilliant!

The other thing in that is the joke that the people are literally 'out of this world'- ie they have passed away. That's why I love Derren so much- his stuff works on so many levels, some that you are not even aware of until much later. And there's always some dark humour involved...

As I said earlier in the thread, I really enjoyed this show- I'll be watching again in the next few days, to try to catch some of the subtleties I might have missed on first watch. The train bit was my favourite- Derren dispassionately reading out instructions of how to escape as the train approaches, and Matt struggles. Pure Vaudeville! Should have had backing music of a piano playing frantically away. Also made me laugh that the train driver sees Matt and beeps his horn, rather than bothering to apply the brakes :D

A note that hasn't been mentioned in this thread- Matt appears at the end wearing (I think) Rosary beaRAB, with a cross attached. Derren clearly points at the cross as he's bigging up Matt's achievement. As anyone who's read his book knows, Derren is a former Christian, who is now an avowed atheist.Just wondered what anyone else thought about this- I find it interesting.

Agree with all your comments...I haven't read any positive reviews or heard from anyone who was blown away (in the good way!) byt the show last night.

I love Derren a lot but it's long-standing love from 'Waking Dead' and the brilliant 'Mind Control' stuff...I even loved 'The Heist'. I'll keep tuning in hoping he gets his mojo back but like you say, the genie is out of the bottle and I don't think he's ever going to be impressive as he once was.

I've just read his blog on the subject, written the following day. He says the show was heavily edited and there was a lot more to it than could be shown. http://derrenbrown.co.uk/blog/2010/09/hero-morning-after/

I'm not sure what people are complaining about. Do they think Matt was fake? That he was in on the whole thing, that he knew he was in a simulator? OR are they complaining that he was hypnotised the whole time, therefore not actually choosing for himself?

Anyway - I enjoyed the show - am always interested in mind manipulation, especially if it benefits the person, and am looking forward to the next one.:)

I'm amazed that some people would imagine that the train track was not set up in the first place and then scream fake when found that is was.

What is worse is that they have missed the whole point of it and that was to test the subject.

How can anyone think that Derren just picked an unelectrified train track at random, strapped him down and waited for a train?

The track owners were obviously asked and permission given, and the train driver was never going to willingly drive the train over the bloke knew where he was.

It was all about testing the bloke and nothing to do with the train set up.

Sometimes I don't think some don't get a grip of what is actually being done and why in their rush to analyse every frame for fakery, and miss the big picture.

Yes Ive seen Derren live and also I have all his shows recorded. I ask what would be the point in faking it all? For good TV? He has managed good TV before without faking that Im aware,no-one has come forward to say its all an act, surely someone would have.Im sure there are certain artistic compromises for TV.
He would lose credibility and his TV work would certainly be f***ed.
Thats my reference point, not that I will defend Derren at all costs because I woudlnt. I'm not that arsed, I like his work but dont know him personally so dont care. If it transpired it was all a set up Id be dissapointed, because I expect more from him.
