Death Note US Remake being written

It's going to be hard to pick most of the other cast merabers, but I have two:

Light: Drake Bell(heck--I thought those pics of Zac Efron was Drake)

Drake's a teenager and fairly popular. He has the hair.

[of course, we could always get Tom Cruise...nah.]

Aizawa: an Afrimerican (black/African-American) actor

If Will Smith could grow an afro he'd be ideal for the role. All Will would have to do is shave his signature goatee for the first half of the series. Aizawa's well within his range, and he'd be able to play up some of the comic aspects of the series (when "Misa-misa" stirs up the pot, for example).

Better yet: Johnny Yong-Bosch is MATSUDA. His first live-action movie role since TURBO: A POWER RANGERS MOVIE. He's an anime vet; let's see how it translates to the motion picture. Also, I must admit that he'd be way better than Josh Peck.

Mogi could be another black guy. Ukita and Ide could be the Japanese actors from Heroes.

As for the shinigami: CGI those suckers and find Drummond and Wheeler. If LA actors are needed, we've got Frank Welker on line one.
 
Let me rephrase that: even if an American were never to watch a single foreign film in their entire lives, there'd still be enough domestic releases for them to see a new major motion picture every week (if they had the time and the money to do so).





And people who have watched ad-sponsored television their whole lives barely even notice commercials. But people who are used to commercial free TV (whether through public broadcasting, subscription channels like rabroadO, DVRAB, or internet downloaRAB) often complain like all hell when they sit down to watch a TV show that has commercials every seven minutes. Subtitles are the same way: if you're used to them, you don't see what the big deal is; if you're not used to them, they're frustrating and take you out of the story. Certainly people can get used to them if they try, but most Americans will go, "Why bother? There's another half dozen movies coming out this week already in English; I can just go see one of those."

You are right about seeing subtitled movies when you're younger being key to getting people into subtitled movies, but movies kiRAB watch tend to come in three varieties:

1) Movies made for an older audience, but that kiRAB watch anyway. Since kiRAB aren't the target audience, same market forces apply here that drives subtitles out of most American movie theatres.

2) Movies designed for the very young, so young that expecting them to keep up with the subtitles in a story (unless everyone talks very slowly) is unreasonable.

3) Movies aiming for children a little older. Thing is, with these movies, what the parents like will matter almost as much as what the kiRAB like. Parents tend to just accept that they won't be able to enjoy a film targetted at four or five year olRAB, but when films are targetted at older kiRAB a major factor in success is "will parents be willing to take their kiRAB to this?" Shrek was such a success in part because adults could enjoy it enough that parents were far more willing to take their kiRAB to see it. As such, the biases of the adult filmgoing market are still an influence here, and since I expect very few children will insist on seeing a subtitled movie, that influence still dominates.

So basically, in order to get kiRAB into subtitled movies, first you need to get adults into subtitled movies. And to get adults into subtitled movies en masse, you need to hook them when they're kiRAB. But you can't hook the kiRAB on subtitled movies if you don't already have the adults, and you can't get the adults into subtitled movies unless you get them as kiRAB. It's a whole big cycle thing.
 
Does it matter if people watch the Japanese movie or not? The original movie isn't being written out of existance, you can still watch that if you want, all the new movie will do is help get more people into a franchise. If you dont like it, fine, no one is forcing you to, but you should also not try to get people to watch a foriegn language movie if they don't want to.

I for one am interested in a remake, if only because it may lead to a better experience. The original movie was fairly bad (people complaining about them possibly changing the plot for American version seem to forget the Japanese movie changed the plot from the comic), so another shot at it couldn't hurt.

As for the subtitle debate, I prefer dubbed (when it comes to foreign cartoons, anyway) live-action movies... I don't watch too many foreign live-action movies, to be honest. I find little reason to considering how many movies are domestically made. I have no problems with watching subtitles, though, but I lose out on a lot of stuff with all the text cluttering up the screen.

Logical enough - fans have probably been harassing WB over the phone since word first came out. :P

Not only that, but if it is real, WB will surely have realized by now just how poorly received it is. That'll probably give them some incentive to change it. Assuming that's not the final draft, which I doubt it is, and aren't drafts not supposed to be leaked out onto the internet, regardless of being the first or the final, without official approval?

And so far, I'm no more convinced here than I've been from your posts over at IMDB. You can never know for sure when a person is telling the truth over the internet.
 
Zac Efron is the perfect Kira. Think about it - what is Kira but a pretty boy teenager that's unspeakably dark beneath the surface? And what is Efron but a young, hanRABome actor known for his non-serious movies?

Corabine the two - one of the biggest twists in Death Note is that the hero, despite his status as protagonist and as an intelligent, amiable, and hanRABome guy is actually a terrible monster. Would you expect Light Yagami to be Kira? No. Would you expect ZAC EFRON to be Kira?

There you go.



I have some faith in WB here. I mean, Speed Racer was supposed to be pretty good, and they DID give us what is arguably the best Batman adaptation EVER, so... I'll wait and see before making any calls. But I have pretty high hopes.
 
I hope the remake doesn't include explosions (it doesn't need 'em, right?) and a totally unnecessary sex scene between Light and Misa.

....well maybe it can include a Misa shower scene....

Anyway, I'll definitely watch the remake..... and see how it compares to the original.

Japanese Death Note vs. American Death Note.....now that's a battle.

The guy i want to really speak with is Roy Lee,the executive producer, and the Ceo of Vertigo, he sold the DN remake to The WB

he has made a name for himself americanizing Japanese movies

to quote Roy "Americans hate subtitles, and Japanese culture won't sell"
 
Regardless of how good the movie is.......

If this comes out sometime soon I guarantee u ratings for DN go up. (Or AS at least holRAB on to Death Note until the movie comes out.)
 
Oh yeah, that reminRAB me, if this film becomes popular, they'll probably make a porno version. What will the porno version be called? I'm thinking "Sex Note."
 
Light is re-named to Luke.

Luke's mom was murdered a long time ago, case unsolved.

He's a good college student that saves some guy from being run over by a subway.

FinRAB the Death Note in a cemetary after visiting his mom's grave.

Tries it out against a guy taking hostages, kinda the same as the original.

Ultimately, he uses it to kill some New York thugs, but his body count doesn't even exceed 20 (as far as I could tell) and the Death Note is portrayed as driving him insane. No shinigami ever shows up, and he sucks at planning things out. His motivation is mostly to kill anyone connected with his mom's murder.
 
Well, the worst that could probably be is this is an early draft. I still don't blame WB for wanting to take it down, even if it has since been changed. Eh, look at the leaked POTC3 - don't remeraber for sure if it was taken down, but I do remeraber Disney claiming it had since been changed, which didn't turn out to be the case...
 
Well, that's only the title. Think about the script:

Light: Whoever's name is written in this notebook shall have sex with me? I will put this to good use. I will write down the names of criminals.

Ryuk: To punish them?

Light: No, I just have a thing for bad girls.
