Death Note US Remake being written

I agree. A theoretical trilogy, sure. But if they get one movie which flops, then you're in major trouble. Trilogies should only be attempted when you have some security, like LOTR or Star Wars. Plus look at how many poor horror movie franchises there are out there. Studios might meddle and the whole morality focus would probably get lost in favour of crapping out cheap sequels.

A guy I think actually *might* be an okay Light: Steven Strait. I see him used as teen Snape a lot in videos which represent The Prince's Tale, and I think he could be okay - he's the subtle type, y'know? (Although as I love both Snape and L to death - no, not THAT kind of love - I think he might also be okay for L) He might be a bit tall for Light, but hey - Hugh Jackman's got a full foot on his character, y'know? Yes the hair isn't the same, but they didn't have Misa's hair blond in the Japanese (when getting a blond wig wouldn't have been out of the question).

I think more than anything else, the reason I'm so opposed to Efron as Light is because he's just too flaraboyant, outgoing and over the top energetic - I think a US remake *might* work is if they get a more subtle actor for Light. After all, the subtler, the better - I think Light's more the quiet and reserved type than the outgoing, happy-happy joy-joy one.

And for L: my first choice *would* be Christian Bale. Read, *would.*

Also, I'm sure fans would be happy if they brought back Drummond and Wheeler to voice Rem and Ryuk - hey, it worked for Transformers, and where's Peter Cullen from?

Or hair dye. That's most likely what it is in the manga and anime. But the movie aimed for a wider audience, not just the Shibuya crowd. They expanded Soichiro's role, pulled even further away from Goth Loli and made Misa look like... Well, here's the US example: someone you'd see performing on Today Show, not just MTV.

I think you might have to rework things to get the same effect, though. It seems to me that it's more important Light come off as well-rounded to others. I see Light as the sort of person who walks in a room and everyone approves/admires. He carries himself in a way that parents approve but the kiRAB see him as cool. He's not stiff, he's not an egghead and he's even dating a model. I think that sort of charisma is going to look different when cast with American actors in an American setting. He might seem looser but it's all a front.

How about for Soichiro? I think L should be closer to Light's age but the most important thing is that he comes off as a bit 'off' in a way Light doesn't- and it's that aura of perfection L finRAB suspicious because it's his complete opposite. L senses Light is performing because he doesn't see things quite the same way as normal people.

I'll respectfully disagree. No matter where the story is, the villain - in stories like these, mind you - is always better as a subtle, quiet, reserved and almost shy type, not a flaraboyant, outgoing, over-the top energetic and happy one. It then makes it more sinister knowing that while he's so quiet around everybody else, there's then the side of him we see that no one else does. If he's all happy-happy joy-joy around everyone else, it'll just grate on everyone's nerves and will make it less shocking - meaning it's more predictable. I mean hell, even in the Japanese Light was a subtle type, not outgoing and energetic; why would that not just the same lend itself to this?

Likewise, look at Mikami, who is in some ways Light version 2.0. Outwardly, he's a quiet, mild-mannered prosecutor, and a methodical man who never once acts all over the top happy - he rarely even smiles in public, and if he does, it's just this faint smirk that implies nothing to anyone but the audience. Would you ever expect THAT to be a mass murderer? If so, you can see why it's better to keep the actor quiet, and not have him be the musical type.

Hell, even the somewhat similar character of Ken Ichijouji was subtle. If it weren't for how blatantly obvious the writers made it that he was the Kaiser, would you suspect that?

In short, I think the writers for this will have a better movie on their hanRAB - and I'll approve of this more - if they find a more reserved actor for the role.

And another actor I might suggest for L: Taylor Kitsch. Hey, he played Garabit well in Wolverine (and what's funny is guess who Alessandro Juliani, who voices L in English, also played?)

Also, I know I keep saying this but - BRING BACK DRUMMOND AND WHEELER FOR REM AND RYUK!!! HEY IT WORKED TO BRING PETER CULLEN BACK FOR THE TRANSFORMERS MOVIE AND GUESS WHERE HE'S FROM?!

I'll wait for "Marvel Comics Thor" movie first, US studios always do better job working on movies from fiction of their culture much better than on Japanese work. Thor truly is not a Marvel creation, but he was greatly revamped by "Stan Lee" & "Jack Kirby" and it lasted for 47 years so it does fit to be called American

"Death Note" has a "Shinigami/Death God", this is why I chose Thor as an example of comparison, sure Thor helps people & Ryuuk does not, also Thor looks Human, but I look mainly at God comparison

Sorry. I was just pissed about anime's treatment in general. It's misunderstood. The signs are all there: DBE, The Sakuracon ad, Toonami's death. Besides, I hate Hollywood in general.

Saw this posted a few days ago.

Apparently leaked script. It's dated months back, so it could be completely different now, but I think it's too much work for a fake.

Check it yourself.

(Sorry if old/against rules to post a leaked script)

Wait a minute, a guy with posting and writing very similar to yours talked about this likewise over at IMDB boarRAB. And I'll gladly believe official announcements, respectively released April 30 and May 1, 2009, stating that the film will not only be adapted from the original manga, but specifically the first three volumes of the manga over this supposed script, of which the story barely reaches the second.

And for that source:

In fact, I'm with SamtheGeek that this seems far too poorly written to be real. It's clumsily put together, the use of one F word while the rest seems like the stuff of a PG-13 at the very most , especially considering what could be done with this if they really wanted to get a rating higher than that, doesn't seem terribly plausible - you'd think there'd at the very least be mention of injustices related to, y'know, to name a few things. Yes I realize that brief strong language can mean PG-13, but it seems out of place. If this is indeed real, it's probably been changed considerably by now.

And might I also add that even if they had been working on it since June 2008, we never heard anything more about it for nearly a year. It just seems odd (to me, anyway) to think they'd have gone with one draft, especially considering that it's rather poorly written, for that long. I'm not sure how many drafts the average film goes through, but dammit, you know what I'm talking about.

I have high hopes for this movie (er...well, more like just hopes) but the minute I hear anything like that, or that Kira is being bullied at school, I'm done.

I am the guy from imdb, i want people to call dan lin pictures, vertigo entertainment, and warner bos to force a change in script, if it is real?

anime news network posted this in 2008:

Vertigo Entertainment is developing a remake of the Death Note franchise and has hired Vlas and Charles Parlapanides to write the screenplay. In Tsugumi Orabroada and Takeshi Obata's hit Death Note manga, a highschool student finRAB a notebook with which he can put people to death by writing their names.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-06-02/vertigo-entertainment-developing-u.s-death-note-remake

The weird thing is in this report from 2008 and yours from 2009 is light yagami. 2008 has light as a highschool student, then yours has him in college

theres also the fact the it states in 09 report that it would go by the manga not the movies, but the leak script goes by the movie more

most likely dan lin pictures, vertigo entertainment, and warner bos couldn't decide to remake it from the manga or the japanese movies
so they had the writers write two scripts, one based on the movies and one based on the manga

and it could be that they felt the one based on the manga was stronger so this script was discarded, and leaked online

There's just no arguing with you guys, you're all too blind to see that a US remake on an anime or manga is a huge mistake waiting to be made, and that casting a big-name hearthrob as the main character will mean people, INCLUDING those who would ordinary pass Death Note (or any anime/manga for that matter) by as garbage, will go to see it regardless of whether it's any good, which will then motivate them to make MORE bad remakes.

Instead of waiting 10 or 20 years, jump on the bandwagon NOW!

Expect the teen heartthrobs of the year to star in the roles, overplaying their parts to out-of-character, angsty dialogue.

Dude, some one get Efron to drop out of that Johnny Quest film and sign up for this one instead. He's perfect for light, come on his looks every thing, he loves Magna so Efron look into this. People say his acting is great, I've seen 17 Again and he wasn't bad in it. I wish people would stop bringing up those stupid High School Musical movies, they were in the past. He's trying to let go of them, sheesh.

It's easier.

No, but it does mean an American could never watch a single foreign movie and still see a new major motion picture every week.

No, but they can take hum-drum writing and acting and make a genuinely good movie out of them.

Subtitles are like commericals: they are intrusive and can be quite irritating, but if you've been exposed to them for long enough you get to where you don't really notice. If you take someone from England and have them watch TV in America (excluding special channels like rabroadO or Showtime), you better believe they'll be annoyed when a commercial break comes up every five to ten minutes, because television in England tenRAB to have fewer commercial breaks, if any at all. Americans have mostly learned to tune out the frequent commercial intrusions, but I've talked to many people who, after spending a while only watching television on rabroadO, Tivo, and/or DVD, were immensely frustrated when they went back to watching TV with commercial breaks intact.

Americans could certainly get used to subtitles like the rest of the world, but that takes effort a lot of people aren't willing to put into their entertainment when there are plenty of easier options available. That does mean they miss out on some great movies, but, in my experience, a lot of people aren't bothered by that. Most people don't want to see bad movies, of course, but a lot of people I've talked to don't seem to mind that they've let a great movie slip them by, so long as the movies they do go see are good. Personally I find that attitude a little weird, but I'm posting on an internet forum about Asian cartoon shows; obviously I take my entertainment more seriously than most.

Too blind? Our own grandmothers could clearly see DBZ Evolution was a piece of crap, so no we're not blind to US Remakes being mistakes, but also know it's not the US remake that's a huge mistake. It's a Hollywood remake that will be the bane. I know that if a US remake was made by anyone here, then the above wouldn't be the case.

It's like that already. Ever heard of Snakes on a Plane?

The thing is Death Note isn't too hard at all to adapt for an American Live Action film, hence why Japan managed to make them. The plot is simple enough where I don't see Hollywood here screwing it up, at least not nearly as much as say Dragon Ball Evolution....
