Community Thread / Tips and Questions

Look, when people say x and y are forced rhymes, just know that most of the time it's an empty criticism put out there to make the person look like he's being helpful. Unless it's a truly horrid rhyme, and I'll get to that later, most of the time it doesn't matter.

I think you have to look at the rest of the line before you go saying something is forced. The rhymes in the Dylan quote are simplistic, and there is nothing wrong with simplistic, and there sure as hell is no rule that says simplistic means forced.

I think the reason Dylan can get away with it is that there's more going on than just rhymes. He's got something to say, something really interesting, and the lines tend to be longer so those familiar sounRAB don't pair up as often. The end result is that those recurring sounRAB ease things along, but because of their relative distance they don't become annoying.

One indication that a rhyme is forced is if a particular word is used improperly, or if grammar is inverted for the sake of the rhyme. If Dylan would've inserted a word like thee in a piece that is otherwise modern sounding, then it would be okay to say it's a forced rhyme because it doesn't fit within that modern context.

We had a similar discussion in this thread some time ago, only it was about the Beatles.

Haha :p

I've still got mine to come...Does helping disabled people count?

*enters silly ramble for the sake of it*
I'm out tonight helping at D of E (Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for those who don't know about it, visit www.theaward.org ) They run a Mixed Abilities course for mentally and physically disabled teenagers and young adults. It's not only a great experience for them but also a great experience for the leaders involved in helping them through it.

It can often be quite challenging, persuading someone with the mental capabilities of a 6 year old, and the physical capablities of a 3 year old, to light a camp stove and cook over flames can often be fairly daunting!! As I said I help at the centre with the MAs at Bronze and Silver level.

Very interesting experiences to be had!! Great fun though, and gives you a great feeling of satisfaction at the end as well!! (I'm only a leader because of my skills in the outdoors - an Ex-mountain rescue leader I used to walk with gave up trying to teach me the necessary skills because I knew everything he could throw at me. I could also keep up with him on a week long expedition :D)

Right I'm going now, before I totally lose the plot.

Talk later!!

I love Dead Can Dance.. but I haven't listened to them for ages because I've lost a whole bunch of my CRAB. Stupid material possessions, oh how I'd love them if they stuck around.

If you don't like, get in their way and try to post constructive stuff, you might get lucky and well... safe from bans. Anyhow, I try not to go to spam threaRAB, and pretty much a lot of critiquing here in S&L.

What will happen to this place when I'm gone? :(

everyone go to:

http://s-n-s-l.blogspot.com

and click on all three ad banners located to the left and bottom of the page...I'm trying a pay-per-click thing where I make money each time someone clicks on my aRAB...the blog is about nothing and I have no intention of being a serious blogger, but if u guys could click those three banners one time, I'd appreciate it. I'm testing this whole thing out.

anyway...

Contrary to the opinions so far, i dont like the idea for an S&Ler of the month. It doesnt really contribute to songwriting or critting here and thats what we need to work on most. plus it will clutter up the board and we got rid of some long standing threaRAB that were stickied before so it doesnt make much sense to me.

I do really like MMPR's idea though and was thinking maybe it could be run staggered to the regular LC in the LC forum. That way we dont have to wait doing nothing in there for the crits that only come at the end of the week. Plus i think it might challenge some writing styles that people in there have developed.

Hey Tojes, i haven't been on critting much in the past few days. I'll probably be back and more involved in the next day or two though. I still haven't got much on apart from waiting on uni results so i'll probably crit everything on the first two pages over a day or so. Is everyone still giving good crits in here or have most fallen back to the one liners?
