Cartoon moments: Getting crap past the radar

1. In the first episode of Mega Man (1994 series), Dr Wily is trying to do some operations on Megaman, much to Roll's dismay, who says "Hold it Dr Diskhead!" Replace the "s" in diskhead with a "c".

2. In the Ocean Dub of DBZ, after Ginyu gives Frieza some dragon balls, Frieza says that "the balls give him something of joy and that he wants to caress them".

Early episodes of Dragonball Z had a few questionable lines in the dub such as Frieza's "Alright, big boy, whatever turns you on" and Dende's infamous "Don't piss off the God of Love!"

It's because adults make cartoons and it's not an uncommon practice for them to throw in little jokes and visual gags for their own amusement that they know will go over kids heads.

One example that comes to mind is the "Lake Titicaca" song sung by the Warners on Animaniacs.

However, few examples can top how Rocko's Modern Life actually got away with the name Chokey Chicken on a kids' network, for 3 whole seasons! Rocko also got away with having a sea captain character named Crappy Jack in the short "Fish & Chumps" (Surprisingly, Nickelodeon's censors didn't seem to have a problem with the word 'crap', since the word was also spoken on Ren & Stimpy and Hey, Arnold!).

More Rocko tidbits:

  • In the short "Sand in your Navel", a crab says the word "ass" in Spanish.
  • In the short "Carnival Knowledge" (another risque title that no one seemed to pick up on), one of the carnival rides is the "Elevator to Hell" the word 'hell' is clearly printed for all to see, although the word is never spoken.

There was a whole episode of Pepper Ann about her getting a bra and ended with her flashing her whole class. Also in another episode she was giving Milo some magazines and saw one called "Play Dude" in the pile. She then goes "Oops, how did that get in there?" with a guilty grin.

One from Rocko I gotta mention: When Rocko is in a health club on a rowing machine, he accidentally changes the movie setting on its screen from something nice and calm to Deliverance, complete with "Dueling Banjos" and hillbillies screaming "Squeal like a pig!" at him .

I was always surprised how they were able to get away with referencing a movie that includes male anal rape.

Ren & Stimpy fans: Go back and watch "An Abe Divided". Ren clearly says the F-word while muttering about how they have to scrub the Lincoln Memorial. This isn't even an instance of hearing what you want to hear; it's pretty obvious.

Just remembered another from SpongeBob:
FD: Who be disturbin' the Flying Dutchman in his own lair?
SB: It's Squidward, he wants to complain to you.
SQ: I-I, n-no I d-don't...
SB: Well what about all that stuff about him having a dirty ship and being lazy and all?
SQ: H-Ha, I n-never said that...
FD: Insulitin' a man's ship be worse than insultin' his mother!
SB: No, no, it was his mother you said was dirty, not his ship.

:eek::D

Not to mention several one-eyed creatures in the Fly of Despair...

2 examples from The Powerpuff Girls come to mind:

In "Mommy Fearest", the girls are helping the Professor get ready for his date with 'Ima Goodlady'. During this montage, Buttercup is shown putting something in the Professor's jacket pocket and saying, "And don't forget these."

In "Stray Bullet", the girls are discussing what to name the wounded squirrel they brought home. While Blossom suggests 'Lady Josephine' and Bubbles suggests 'Miss Fluffikins', Buttercup insists that Bullet is a 'he' and they should 'him' Bruce. This leads to an argument, much of which we don't hear clearly; when the Professor tells them to break it up, Bubbles gets the last word in. We don't hear what's originally said, we only hear her reply: "Squirrels EAT nuts, stupid!"

I just saw this two seconds ago on Rocko's Modern Life in "Canned" where Rocko gets a job at a "one on one hot line".

Rocko-"Oh baby,oh baby, oh baby"
Mrs.Bighead-"Rocko?
Rocko-" Mrs. Bighead?" both hang up.

Also the list next to Rocko explaing what to remember lists
Be hot
Be naughty
Be Courteous
What?

Rocko was infamous for that kind of stuff. My personal favorite was from the end of She's The Toad. Filburt and Heffer, dressed in a two-man Mr. Bighead costume start a cult of Conglom-O workers, wearing Mr. Bighead hats and convince them all to chant wee-wee over and over again. Yeah, it was that kind of show.

Total Drama World Tour's getting a lot of crap past the radar when it comes to Sierra's obssession with Cody. It's sounding almost near date rape level whenever we see Cody wake up during flight.

In "Chip 'N' Dale: Rescue Rangers", when Dale and Gadget switches bodies (their heads remained intact), Gadget warns him: "Keep the hands off the body."

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the infamous "vomit scene" in Chuckie Loses His Glasses, where Angelica vomits straight into the camera and on Drew's shirt.

Funnily enough, all these shows were produced by Games Animation(the R&S episode in question was Stimpy's Cartoon Show, a Games episode) . I'm not sure if that's a coincedence or not.
Also, the slug character is seen reading "Playslug" while operating the carousel, complete with a picture of a pretty apt looking female slug.

I can't remember the exact quote, but an early episode of Ducktales had the Beagle Boys talking to (either) Magica or Glomgold who'd hired them to do a job, and somehow, being #1 came up in the conversation, to which one of the Beagle's replied "Good, I'm tired of being treated like #2". It doesn't come across as well, here, but the way it played out in the conversation, it really did sound like something scatological.

In one episode of Chip 'n Dale's Rescue Rangers, a joke I can't believe was made:

Professor Norton Nimnul created a device that ran on prunes. When he discovered he is all out of prunes and his device was going to flunk out, he runs into a supermarket shouting "Prunes! I need prunes!". A stockboy looks at him and says, "Poor guy".

It wasn't often that the Disney Afternoon shows made incontinence jokes.
