Cartoon moments: Getting crap past the radar

How about the episodes of both Rugrats and Spongebob where Angelica/Spongebob & Patrick learn to swear?

I know the *real* words were covered up with dolphin squeaks and various other noises, but it didn't take a stretch of the imagination to figure out what the initial words were in both shows.

This isn't so much "inappropriate" as "unusual to hear in a children's cartoon", but I have another example from Powerpuff Girls...

In the episode "Super Friends", the girls make friends with a girl named Robin. At one point, they get into a conversation with her about their creation and explain how their powers were caused by an "accident". Robin responds by saying something along the lines of "My mom says I was an accident too...".

Really, back then, I would have NEVER expected a Cartoon Network show to even hint at such a subject.

The funny thing is that it was originally "Don't Pee on the Electric Fence" but Nick thought that was too inapropriate. I know that I am not the only person who thinks that "pee" sounds like a little kid word and "whiz" sounds somewhat crude.

Cow and Chicken: It could take a whole thread to describe everything that show had, but one thing that caught my attention the most was:

Bestiality.

Two of C&C's grandparents were a human and a hen (which kind of explains how Chicken could be the son of two humans, kind of), and one of their relatives was formed by the union of a human woman and a snail.

The episode of 2 Stupid Dogs where the dogs are taken to school as a show and tell project. After the normal zaniness, we come to the point where the class wonders how the kid can tell if the little dog is a boy, at which point he holds little dog up, and we see individual shots of shock from various students. Then we come to a shot of one little girl going 'OOOHH!" in a very disturbing tone.

True, but to be fair with Spongebob, they did sort of add dolphin noises in between every other word, so you couldn't actually make any sense of it if you inserted in words anyway.

It was implied but the sentences were never structured properly.

I'm still surprised Spongebob got away with having Spongebob, Patrick, and Mr. Krabs go on a panty raid. Mr. Krabs' mother's panties.

One of my absolute favorite innuendos comes from the Spongebob Squarepants episode "Texas":
Spongebob: "Patrick, your genius is showing!"
Patrick, while covering his crotch: "Where?"

I also was always amazed that Hey Arnold! got away with portraying Helga's mother as a depressed alcoholic. Helga's family in general had a really awful structure, and some of the themes seemed a little dark for a kids' show.

Oh yes, Miriam had an addiction to her "smoothies." I always think that Sam from iCarly was loosely based off of Helga, especially when it came to her mother.

Craig Bartlett had the spinoff series in the works called The Patakis, focusing on Helga's family when she's older (either in middle school or high school) and how she writes letters to Arnold after he moves away. Bartlett wanted to go in a darker direction with that cartoon, probably focusing more on the dysfunction of her family, but it never got greenlit because it was "too dark."

I also heard that Mr. Simmons, Arnold's teacher was gay. To be fair, I did have my theories that he was. Sure it not uncommon for a man to have a sensitive side, but most of his tendencies always kind of made me think that "There's something off about him. But yeah, Helga's mom being an alcoholic was kind of disturbing when I realized the tendencies.

Also, Flapjack. I'm pretty sure K'nuckles "Maple Syrup" is some form of booze, or at least in the earlier episodes. Considering I can't even recall a moment where Flapjack drank any Maple Syrup the way that K'nuckles does.

Code Lyoko has had a fanservice scene for pretty much every female character.
Yumi: Underwear scenes galore, in bath, sitting around with Ulrich in only a bra.
Sissi: Had SO MANY scenes of her in her room, half naked.
Aelita: Had one panty shot I think, had her in the shower.

there a few i'm forgetting.

It was said that while Nickelodeon was having second thoughts regarding the series, MTV also considered picking it up, but ultimately decided that it would be too close to Daria. It's a shame, Helga's family really is one of the most interesting aspects of Hey Arnold! for me; episodes like "Quantity Time", "Helga on the Couch" and "Road Trip" perfectly demonstrate the tensions that were prominent in the Pataki household.
