Calling All Fans of Classic TV Shows/Series

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't have many shows or series on DVD and I've yet to buy an entire collection of any one particular series. The ones I do have are all American (I'm a huge fan of American sitcoms) and are as follows:-

Will & Grace (Season One - 6 discs - 22 episodes)
Malcolm in the Middle (Season One - 3 discs -16 episodes)
Silver Spoons (Season One - 3 discs - 22 episodes)
Jim Henson's Dinosaurs (Seasons 1 & 2 - 4 discs - 29 eps)
The Rifleman (box set - 4 discs - 20 episodes)
The Rifleman (single disc - 3 episodes)

I'm a member of the sitcomsonline webgroup and it took a petition and the best part of a year to get Sony to release Silver Spoons on DVD (it didn't help that it had never been previously released on video). Eventually they listened and in 2007 they released the first season (but only in the US - Region 1) and assured us they would release the rest of the series. But even as I write this, there's been no word since.

Another series I wish they'd release on DVD is "L A Law". There is a movie available but not the actual TV series. They did start showing it again on one of the channels (Alibi, I think) but suddenly stopped after about 6 episodes! I even wrote to them asking why they'd stopped showing it and why they didn't have the decency to at least wait until they got to the end of the series but all I got was the usual crappy reply about them not having any plans to air "L A Law" at this present time.

Hopefully, sometime in the near future I'll complete my Rifleman collection as there is a second box set I need to get. Other shows and series I'd like to get on DVD are "Modern Family", "House" and "Rules of Engagement".

Just going back to the old classics, I'm a lot like you, I don't like to buy DVRAB unless they're the proper ones. I once made the mistake of buying the entire collection of the 60's TV series "Tarzan" (starring Ron Ely). Admittedly it's never been officially released on video or DVD and I thought these would be ok as long as they were watchable. The picture quality is absolutely shite! (although to be honest, I've only tried watching the first episode). Thankfully I didn't pay too much for them, but it certainly taught me a lesson.

I do like some British comedies, such as Fawlty Towers, Bottom and Only Fools and Horses (as included in your list) but for most part, I do prefer American humour (if I tried to list all the American sitcoms I like, this post would go on forever!).

Oh, and while I'm at it, I remembered some more classics to add to my original list:

The Human Jungle (Herbert Lom)
Strange Report (Anthony Quayle)
Man in a Suitcase
Danger Man
Budgie (Adam Faith)
Big Breadwinner Hogg
Boris Karloff's Thriller
Timeslip
Never Mind The Quality, Feel The Width
Journey To The Unknown (loved the haunting "rollercoaster sequence" theme tune to this as well)
Sunday Night at the London Palladium
Dial 999 (Robert Beatty)
The Man from Interpol
Mysteries of Edgar Wallace
The Invisible Man (Original 1960s series)
Mark Saber
The Whistler
Rhoda
Taxi
Laverne & Shirley
Lancelot Link

Okay, let's pretend a new channel has been launched that specializes in classic TV and you're in charge of compiling the list of shows and series to be included. Which shows/series would you choose? Just to be clear, these must be pre-1980s, and ideally your list should contain at least 10 shows. My own choices are predominantly American shows/series - and I make no apologies for this because they are the ones I mostly remember and loved as a boy. Here is my list (in no particular order):-

My Favourite Martian (Bill Bixby, Ray Walston)
The Beverly Hillbillies (Buddy Ebsen)
Bonanza
Green Acres
The Munsters (Fred Gwynne, Yvonne De Carlo)
Petticoat Junction
Highway Patrol
Champion The Wonder Horse
Get Smart (Don Adams)
Davy Crockett
I Love Lucy
Sugarfoot
My Mother The Car (Jerry Van Dyke)
Mister Ed
Cheyenne (Clint Walker)
Gilligan's Island
The Addams Family (John Astin, Ted Cassidy)
Lost in Space (June Lockhart)
The Monkees
The Untouchables (Robert Stack)
Bewitched
Dr. Kildare
The High Chaparral
The Pruitts of Southampton (Phyllis Diller)
Hogan's Heroes
The Twilight Zone
Alfred Hitchcock Presents
Man From U.N.C.L.E.
Wagon Train
Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In
Land of the Giants
The Lone Ranger
The Partridge Family
77 Sunset Strip
Have Gun Will Travel
I Dream of Jeannie
Perry Mason
The Ed Sullivan Show
Marcus Welby M.D.
Cannonball
Hawaiian Eye
The Invaders
Rawhide
Dragnet (Jack Webb)
Whiplash
The Naked City
Alias Smith and Jones
Planet of the Apes (Ron Harper, Roddy McDowall)
The Time Tunnel
The Rifleman

Billy Liar (70's series with Hylda Braid as nana,,)
Sharp Intake of Breath (david jason0
Secret life of edgar briggs (david jason)
The Howerd Confessions (frankie howerd)
Colditz
Tarzan ( ron ely)
Queenies Castle (diana dors)

For me, some of the less obvious classic shows that haven't been repeated for decades:
Secret Army/Kessler
Private Schultz
The Mad Death
The Nightmare Man
Survivors( seventies version)
Thriller
The Carpetbaggers
New Scotland Yard

I would like to see all the old B&W comedy shorts from 1920's 30's 40's & 50's.
Laurel & Hardy,KeystoneCops.Harold Loyld,Fatty Arbuckle,Abbot & Costello,Buster Keaton,3 Stooges,Charlie Chaplin,Jack Benny Show,Sgt Bilko & Wack'o.
I'm sure there is more but what a line up.

I would show all the Tom Baker Doctor Whos again, also as a vintage answer to BGT show some Opportunity Knocks from the seventies.

There was a series of Logan's Run? I never knew that! It was a good film but it's a bit dated if you watch it now.

Another vote for the Tom Baker Dr Whos, and maybe even the Pertwee ones too :p

I should've included Logan's Run in my list. The TV series came out around the mid-70s and starred Gregory Harrison. I recently read somewhere that they're planning to do a remake of the movie but I'm not sure if it's true or not.

Lovely thread - bringing back lots of memories...

Has anyone mentioned...

- Marcus Welby
- St Elsewhere - love it as it launched so many TV careers
- Not in front of the children
- Adam Adamant
- Original Star Trek
- Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (Richard Basehart)
- Batman (Adam West)
- Taking Over The Asylum

Lancer
The Quest
Alias Smith and Jones (first series)
The Tomorrow People (original series)
The First Churchills
I, Claudius
By the Sword Divided
To Serve Them All My Days
A Horseman Riding By
The Monocled Mutineer
Private Shultz
Any of the original Dr Who except Colin Baker
Take Three Girls
When the Boat Comes In
The Charmer

Stretched you definition a bit as some of those are early 80s, but all well worth a rerun and haven't already been done to death.

Lots of great memories on this list

A few I'd add which I don't think have already been included are:

Tales of Mystery and Imagination - mainly because I was too scared to watch the programmes first time around!

The Day of the TriffiRAB - It was a dramatisation with John Duttine.

Quatermass

Robinson Crusoe - It was back in the 60s and I think may have been French. What I remember most about it was the theme music.

The Human Jungle with Herbert Lom.

Rogues Gallery - this was a series about Newgate Prison, and particularly the highwayman Jack Sheppard.

If there was a channel that show classic TV shows/series I would show:

  1. Coronation Street (old episodes)
  2. Captain Scarlett
  3. Joe 90
  4. Stingray
  5. The Secret Service
  6. ThunderbirRAB

Return of the Saint, the critics weren't keen but it pulled in 18 million viewers and the stories were good. Also The New Avengers, again better than what the critics thought, and the original series of Survivors.
