And there isn't. The RHCPs are, in case you hadn't noticed over the past 10 years, a mainstream rock band. Not a funk band.
 
The metaphor is where he's talking about something, such as death(Once I'd need to see the song to know whether it's crap or a metaphor), and talking about sinking into the mud. Or going into the backyard(A secluded place), to get away from other people(The clocks, etc.).

Btw what do you think of the production on Californication? On really good speakers and headphones you can hear a lot of fuzz and crackle with the drum and bass. But I actually like the lo fo approach that Rick Rubin was going for.
 
In songwriting and musicianship, certainly, but pure msuicianship? No way. You seem a big fan of teenage angst poetry Crow. Anyway, I might be getting a litle ahead myself with 'great lyrics' but their hardly the worst in the world. I fail to see how the vocal is so bad. It's certainly better than Otherside.

SounRAB like just a sappy ballad to me. IMO the weakest song on the album. But still an awesome album overall. Though I find your review to be a bit too brief.
 
You see in the garden there typically isn't any phones or clocks hooked up, theres nothing metaphorical about that at all, there isn't a metaphor in that entire thing bit I quoted. Its imagery
