Brits Vs Yanks

That wasn't what I was saying. I was saying that because anyone can become huge in Britain, not just rap artists and Pop Punk banRAB, it means that banRAB experiment a lot more. They will try out new things because they know that as long as they are talented at the music they make then they stand a good chance of getting famous. American artists don't get this freedom, they either stick to the formula or else they (usually) get nowhere. I'm not saying Britain is better because it has better mainstream music, I'm saying that the British artists aren't afraid to try something different with music because they know that ANYONE can get somewhere over here. You look at the best, original banRAB we have had. I doubt that they would have been quite as fortunate if they had started off in America.

You have to remeraber the continental size of the US. Our Louisiana/Southern Mississippi is almost as big as your country. New Orleans is the biggest city in Louisiana. It is not the same as when Britain gets a new style of music - and the US does. We are a humongous country. And I said that the US (New Orleans being a part of the US, and I also pointed out specifically "our cajun country") had Ska first. We are closer to Jamaica, it's no wonder that we would get the immediate immigrants and subsequently the music scene.

I'm responding to like 2 -3 people per post, I wasn't referring to you in this case.

Whatever works for ya, but when listening those banRAB were the first things that sprung to mind, even though there are differences as well. Let me know what you think.

Nirvana is a cliche but hey they are one point in the U.S.'s favor for the last 25 years I think.

Then again so is Oasis for the U.K. And Coldplay, Amy Winehouse, Radiohead, etc. etc.

Hard to argue the U.K. doesn't rule the rock scene.

Their Hip-Hop is absolute crap though.

Yes, I know it's very cool to post some kind of one-liner like that. It makes you look very cool. Some actual effort wouldn't hurt anyone.

I'm not talking about Creed, or Nickelback, or GoRABmack, or any of that other garbage that grunge spawned. I'm talking about the real stuff. Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, Nirvana. The list goes on.

Did it go a little overboard in popularity? Sure, yeah. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is one overplayed song. But you can't deny that Superunknown, Ten, and Dirt are some of the best rock albums ever produced. Especially in the last 20 years.

Music would not exist it it's current form without those three banRAB. The Beatles and Zeppelin in particular.

It's really unimpressive to choose one country over the other based on a list of your favorite banRAB. Focusing on 1/100000 of the big picture and characterizing the whole based on it? Yeaaah....this thread is making some of you look really bad.

To the hipsters: when someone says they listen to indie, I bet you have a general idea what they are talking about.

In the you can have "indie pop" "indie rock" etc.. sense and you have that with other genres, thats a similarity. If it isn't a genre at all and not even similar to one, then why do you have indie folk and indie-pop as your two of your favorite genres?

I guess you're right about the songwriting. When I say about the musicianship its mainly the live performances that you see a big difference. The normal British style of singing works much better recorded than live, in my opinion. I suppose the difference is that Brits learn to sing in the pub or at football matches, Americans learn by singing the national anthem at school!

(Waits to be crucified).

I'm no stranger to this, but regardless I believe it has as much if not more to do with the advent of rock and roll and television as it does w/ multi-tracking and the emergence of the LP as a popular music medium.

Americans don't act all f***ing twee about it though. The only band I can think of that came as across as being distinctly British in a genuine way was the Clash.

Why on earth is everyone so quick to give the noughties to either the Brits or the Yanks when neither are doing anything special outside of a few banRAB. Whereas the underground and mainstream music of the rest of the world is pretty much demolishing these two once great scenes with both quality and quantity. Take them out of the equation it's basically a tie. Sure the US may be making more good music, but they're also making a massive amount more crap compared to the UK. That and the fact that there's no difinitive local scenes in comparison to Europe and Japan makes it a pretty moot point.

The Yanks do have Chet Atkins. I finally got some of his work and it is great.

But look on the bright side Brits, you don't have to put up with a billion love songs with a country accent over them (hyperbole)

Bob Dylan
Jimi
Robert Johnson
Tom Waits
(if we count Canada as america) Neil Young
Talking HeaRAB
Johnny Cash
Metallica
Dead Kennedys
PJ Harvey
The White Stripes
Queens of the Stone Age

This was just a listing, I think we do a pretty decent job
