Blu-Ray = BetaMax II

my friend recently got a xbox360 and few days ago he finally got a PS3 from preorder months ago. he realized he couldn't resell it for much so he returned it and bought HDDVD addon for 360 instead.

I'm sure this has been discussed..but does anyone else feel like Blu-Ray isnt going to make it? I just don't see it lasting or being "the next thing". Here's why:

1. The porn industry isnt going to use Blu-Ray. I'm not a porn guy, but apparently MANY MANY MANY MANY people are...and right now, somewhere around 40% of DVD sales are porn. This is something I saw flash on the bottom of G4 one night. So, Porn is going with HD-DVD which means that the high percentage of porn buyers will now have the HD-DVD option

2. Not everyone is tech-smart. Old people finally understand what a DVD is. Seeing "DVD" in "HD-DVD" is familiar....seeing "Blu-Ray" is apparently confusing and unfamiliar to many people seeing it. From what I understand talking to a friend of mine that manages the local best buy. They have had many returns on Blu-Ray discs that were bought mistakenly, thinking that they were DVD's. Many of those were opened and thrown in a DVD player...people return them thinking they are defective DVD's and don't even have a clue what Blu-Ray is...and obviously then exchange it for a DVD version.

3. Let's face it, unless you're really maxed out on the Entertainment setup at you're house, you're not even going to notice a difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray disc. When DVD's first came out, it was an attractive thing to many people vs. VHS tape because of the quality and getting rid of the whole "tracking" BS that came with video tapes. It was new, useful, simple, and has now become the norm.

On the plus side, the storage is outstanding....and I can see it being a good format for back up and maybe for games...but as far as movies go, I just don't see it taking over because you don't really need all that room for movies... Who knows.

I just don't think we're really in need of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD at the moment for movies...but technology must always advance and there will be a time that the "next video format" takes over, but I just have a feeling that if anything is going to do it, it's either going to be HD-DVD for the reasons mentioned above, or it's going to be something completely different that's in the works now for the future....I don't see Blu-Ray making it, and I feel like that is going to be the downfall of the PS3 and hurt Sony very badly in the next 2 years. I understand that the amount of information that a Blu-Ray disc can hold is much higher than DVD, but is that going to help it survive? i feel like the only thing it's REALLY useful for is backing up your hard drive or making something like the next Adobe Creative Suite available on one Blu-Ray disc instead of a boxed set of DVD's...but in that case, is it really even worth it to have a Blu-Ray reader/burner?

What are your thoughts on Blu-Ray as a whole?

okay...show me a porn tape in betamax after 1985 or 1990 or 1995

mainstream hollywood and the porn industry all want to do the same thing..,make money..hollywood WILL NOT back an unpopular format just for politics..

I think it's too early to speak for either formats... I will say this though, within a couple months or so, the titles available for Blu Ray will surpass HD-DVD. Trust me both formats have their benefits and will stick around for a long time.

So when I have 101 posts and an avatar, PS3 will start releasing good games? "An 06er"...you're playing a system that came out in 06...do you yell at your ps3 for not coming out 2 years ago too, cool guy?

Dude, I was asking the question with sincerity - not because I'm a hater, but because I havent been able to convince myself to buy a PS3. I would, but I just havent been able to say "wow that game looks great, I need it" and have that be the game that helps me pull the trigger..kinda like Dead Rising was, even though that turned out to kind of suck, that's what made me say "alright, I'll get a 360" and I decided to "sack ride and post stupid shit" about it since then. (That was the cheesiest insult I've seen on this entire board so far)

...it's sad that because you know the game selection is so terrible, that rather than answer the question, you decided to attack my rabroad user status.

How's this for an avatar

Umm.. I clearly stated that I read this on G4 and your response is acting as if this is an opinion of mine. I don't know if it's true or not, but that is exactly what it said..that they are producing movies on HD-DVD and NOT on Blu-Ray. This was 2 days ago....who know's what will happen down the line but it sounded as if it's a fact.

not gonna waste my time with replying. after seeing some of your posts, and saying how selling a ps3 is the right decision, well that shows me where you sit, and even if i did give an example of good ps3 games, you woulda most likely shared your distaste for them, so its a lose lose situation. so ill take my "crappy" av and head back to my fanboy cave where ive owned every console prior to this. but for some reason your showing me a thread about fanboy trolling. far from it. waiting at night for my 360 on launch, got a new tv for it, i play it more than my ps3, but im a sony fanboy somehow. go figure. oh yeah, you should probably take your own advice about growing up, congrats, you can make an av calling me names, wow, how will i sleep at night. just move on with your life, my god. its sad you go outta your way to make an av so you can feel cooler about yourself. do you honestly think i care what you think of my opinions. you can give two shits about mine, so the feelings mutual.

Dude, I'm not really sure what I said here that's confusing you...

Just because I bash Sony doesn't mean I'm a fanboy. I hate the way Sony does business, from Elcaset, to minidisc, to UMDs, etcetera... I don't own a Wii, or a 360, and I can certainly afford to buy a PS3.

you're nuts if think they won't...hell hollywood will pick a side for that matter.

When vhs vs. betamax came out...vhs proved to be the more popular format by far (even tho betamax was a better quality product.. professional standard was and still is to some degree beta). VHS was cheaper and the quality wasn't THAT bad than Betamax but more importantly it was more AFFORDABLE plus its what most people had (you can't exchange or loan between the formats). At first hollywood made the same number of movies for each format but as vhs pulled away they fazed out the beta format all together.

So unless something happens to change peoples minds in regards to blu-ray it looks like history MAY repeat itself.

There's a clear difference between DVD vs. Blu-Ray/HD-DVD discs and you don't need to be "maxed out on the Entertainement setup" to see the difference; you just need an HDTV. I work at Best Buy and even our 60+ year old customers can see the difference. And our younger customers look at our Blu-Ray and HD-DVD demos like

Lets be clear on this point. Just because you've owned consoles in the past doesn't mean your opinion is valid. Just like how I've owned 2 360s and both of them were garbage.

Fuck the box.

I'm just getting another one because of Halo 3.

movie studios pick sides because there is politics involved, porn has only 1 goal and thats selling movies to whoever wherever wherever. they'll be neutral making discs in both formats.
