I'm sure this has been discussed..but does anyone else feel like Blu-Ray isnt going to make it? I just don't see it lasting or being "the next thing". Here's why:
1. The porn industry isnt going to use Blu-Ray. I'm not a porn guy, but apparently MANY MANY MANY MANY people are...and right now, somewhere around 40% of DVD sales are porn. This is something I saw flash on the bottom of G4 one night. So, Porn is going with HD-DVD which means that the high percentage of porn buyers will now have the HD-DVD option
2. Not everyone is tech-smart. Old people finally understand what a DVD is. Seeing "DVD" in "HD-DVD" is familiar....seeing "Blu-Ray" is apparently confusing and unfamiliar to many people seeing it. From what I understand talking to a friend of mine that manages the local best buy. They have had many returns on Blu-Ray discs that were bought mistakenly, thinking that they were DVD's. Many of those were opened and thrown in a DVD player...people return them thinking they are defective DVD's and don't even have a clue what Blu-Ray is...and obviously then exchange it for a DVD version.
3. Let's face it, unless you're really maxed out on the Entertainment setup at you're house, you're not even going to notice a difference between a DVD and a Blu-Ray disc. When DVD's first came out, it was an attractive thing to many people vs. VHS tape because of the quality and getting rid of the whole "tracking" BS that came with video tapes. It was new, useful, simple, and has now become the norm.
On the plus side, the storage is outstanding....and I can see it being a good format for back up and maybe for games...but as far as movies go, I just don't see it taking over because you don't really need all that room for movies... Who knows.
I just don't think we're really in need of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD at the moment for movies...but technology must always advance and there will be a time that the "next video format" takes over, but I just have a feeling that if anything is going to do it, it's either going to be HD-DVD for the reasons mentioned above, or it's going to be something completely different that's in the works now for the future....I don't see Blu-Ray making it, and I feel like that is going to be the downfall of the PS3 and hurt Sony very badly in the next 2 years. I understand that the amount of information that a Blu-Ray disc can hold is much higher than DVD, but is that going to help it survive? i feel like the only thing it's REALLY useful for is backing up your hard drive or making something like the next Adobe Creative Suite available on one Blu-Ray disc instead of a boxed set of DVD's...but in that case, is it really even worth it to have a Blu-Ray reader/burner?
What are your thoughts on Blu-Ray as a whole?
