No, that would be tacky. Either the real thing or just let the labels

Actually, I don't. I have the three medals hanging on a hook in the
kitchen so I know where they are when I have to do a PR appearance for
the Fair. AFA the ribbons go, I'd be hard pressed to find them right
now. I can give you stats, though. :-)

Nothing obvious about it. All those things can be made without canning
them. The watermelon pickles are a 3 days project, but not the rest.

That sounds really good.

Speaking as a person with food allergies... We generally do not eat
something if we don't know what is in it. And most of the people I have
been in contact with (at least online) who have food allergies would not eat
food from a block party or a buffet for fear of cross contamination. If
they did go at all (and some would not) they would bring a dish or dishes
that they could eat, take up a plate first from their food and then not eat
anything else.

Some people with food allergies do go to extremes. The mere fact that she
had nuts in her house would send them into a tailspin and they would fear
that anything she made could possibly be cross contaminated with nuts.
So... I would say just to put the nuts and the coconut in. Some people
with nut allergies also avoid coconut. I do not. I only have an allergy to
almonds, but also OAS to almonds and pistachios. I only avoid those nuts
and also mixed nuts because they do contain almonds. Also any packaged food
that says it may contain almonds.

Daughter has a peanut allergy so must avoid most roasted nuts because they
are roasted in peanut oil. I can get cashews at the health food store that
are roasted in sunflower oil. Those are fine. The type of nuts that would
be used in such a salad would also be fine for her.

I could be wrong but it does seem that peanut is the most common of the nut
allergies followed by almond. Yes, some people are allergic to pecans and
walnuts but I think these are a more rare allergy.

Dang, guy, I hate to tell you, but according to the TOS of RFC and the
Cabal (TINC), you lose major points by a) announcing you're killfiling
someone, and b) lose double points when you reply to the KF'd person
through a back door mechanism such as this. Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! The Cabal
(TINC) is not amused.

No, no, you simply do not understand: announcing you're KF'ing someone
is a Usenet newbie move and you lose even *more* points.

OB: Made a really fun Easter side dish that I swiped from FN. Put a
pound of the currently-gorgeous asparagus, trimmed, and spread them
out on a baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil, salt and pepper. Roast
at 400?F for 20 mins. At the 10 min. mark, lay out a bunch of green
onions, root end removed, and drizzle with oil, salt and pepper, and
continue roasting. Cool until you're able to handle the vegetables.
Gather a bundle of asparagus and tie with a green onion. Serve at room
temperature.

Hi Julie, I've been off doing other things lately but were you asking what
it bring to a block party?

We host a street party annually here just as the kids finish the school
year. Big event actually and we arrange with the police to cone off our
road. There's a small fee (15$ last year) but it's just to cover paperwork
processing on their end. We commonly get as many as 400 people walking in
from the blocks around us, carting extra chairs and such. We keep the road
itself just to foot traffic (emergency vehicle access preserved at need) and
setup booths or games in yards. I'm one of the few without a huge shed or
trees blocking the backyard so the primary eating place is my back yard.
I'll be pretty much wall to wall tables but this year because we only have a
gate on one side (re-fenced last fall) we have to check with the police on
the occupancy codes. I believe unless we put the saved other gate back in,
we'll rate a max of 100 vs last time, 200. That's ok, new owners next door
plan to host the rest there. Neighbors all about bring their picnic tables
and such over to our place plus extra grills so this time we'll just spread
them between the 2 yards and possibly take down one fence panel for the
event (put it back up later).

Anyways, 'what to bring' varies but at ours, anything goes. We 'ask' that
folks also post the ingredients/recipe so that those of us who have to watch
for certain things can tell if it should be ok but it's understood that we
can't mandate it or that a person may not know that something has MSG or
whatever in there. Not everyone is as food savvy as you and I are. I put
my name on mine so the locals know when I say it's only got 'X' in it,
that's really what's in it. I'll even add things like 'suitable for (insert
low-sodium, diabetic, low-carb)' on mine. If a diabetic spikes on something
out of the ordinary, they will see on the list what's in there so be able to
avoid it.

Popular items at block parties, provided food safety is observed on a hot
day:

The obvious grilled meats with buns or flour tortilla wrappers
Any version of leafy salad (dressing on side in ice preferred)
Crockpots with heated beans of any version (I have 19 outlets on my back
porch and can accommodate 38 going at once)
reduced sodium 'salt' boiled peanuts plus regular salty ones (crockpots)
'fish-sticks' (whole cleaned grilled spiced fish on a stick)
Fresh breads (not required they be home baked)
deli meats and cheeses plus spreads on ice and head lettuce (sandwiches with
the breads)
Chopped fresh fruit on ice
Watermelons
Chilled soups such as my carrot and 5 spice or Ghiselle's squash with nutmeg
sweet one
Steamed edamame (soybean) in shell
Veggie plates with dips on side
cupcakes and cookies
Jell-O cubes or cut to little squiggly snakes for the toddlers (sugar-free
fine, we usually have some of both)

Hehehe that's just a start on ideas. It's in my mind because we are
starting the preliminary organization today with folks due over for a
cookout in my backyard. The 7 primary perpetrators start arriving about
noon. The emails are flying mostly about what to bring today so we don't
have all salads or something like that. Dan dropped off a half bag of rye
flour as I'm out. I've got 2 loaves going, one for the cookout and one for
him to take home (his wife is the breadmaker and she's on Navy deployment
for another 2 months).

Ok thanks! Attributes got kinda screwy after a bit and was hard to tell.
Same answer though to Jill.

Today's little cookout is shaping up nicely.

For those interested, we have 13 folks (some are kids) plus us 3. Don just
cleaned up the porch since he's been woodworking back there. We've got 2
picnic tables back there so we fit fine. Ghiselle has a 3.5 lb rotisserie
chicken going. Mary is defrosting some hot dogs and bringing her hot air
popcorn maker along with popcorn. Dan's bringing a case of beer. Don's
getting ice for the cooler. Sarah's making a salad bar with lettuce and
other things on the side (add your choices). Mike has his 2 kids making us
jello (grin) and Deanna is still riffling her kitchen as normal (she's a
great cook but often has trouble deciding what to bring). I've got butter
and other condiments as well as salad dressings at the ready plus
plates/silverware and such.

OOPS! As i typoed, The other Dan is arriving with his wife. They help
organize the picnic table delivery using the local teens to carry them
about. We added 2 chairs to the ends of a picnic table and have 3 more on
standby. He's bringing 3 large ruby grapefruit, peeled and ready to be
dipped in sugar or just eaten as is.

That sounds yummy. I envy you the local asparagus; we should have it in

OB More Food: Breakfast at a great spot this morning; I had their wild
rice pancake. It was good enough but the blueberry-walnut pancake
(dinner plate size) is more to my liking.
