Talking about brownies: those of us afflicted with 'sweet teeth' gotta be
eternally grateful for this recipe:

Barb Schaller's Famous Orgasmic Chocolate Brownies

Recipe By: Barb Schaller
Serving Size: 24
Preparation Time: 0:45
Categories: Bars

1 cup unsalted butter (8 oz)
4 ozs unsweetened baking chocolate
2 cups granulated sugar (15 oz)
4 eggs
2 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp almond extract
1 cup chopped nuts, optional (walnuts or pecans) 1 1/3 cups cake flour (6
oz)
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt

In microwave oven, on medium-high power, melt butter and chocolate in
2-quart microwave-safe bowl, about 3 minutes. Stir until smooth. Mix in
granulated sugar, then beat in eggs, one at a time, with wire whisk. Mix
in vanilla and almond. Stir in nuts. Combine cake flour, baking powder,
and salt and fold into chocolate. Spread batter in 9x13" pan lined with
baking parchment and bake in preheated oven at 350?F for about 33-35
minutes. Do not overbake; toothpick may have fudgy crumbs on it, but not
wet batter.

Notes: First Place, Plain Brownies, 1997 Minnesota State Fair. Adapted
from recipe in Cook's Illustrated magazine, March/April 1994. Please note
that I do use real chocolate, unsalted butter and cake flour. If you do
not, don't complain to me about it. And I don't believe the nutritional
analysis at the bottom of this page!

The hosts are supplying paper plates, plasticware (forks/knives/spoons) and
ice. Yes, I think I'll put the nuts on the side, thanks for mentioning it.
Actually, I don't even remember the stuff my aunt made containing nuts.
Maybe she left them out. This shindig is actually being held at a pavilion
up by the ruins on the island, not on our actual street. (The HOA would
frown upon a street party severely; they're a bunch of old farts who don't
believe in people having fun.)

How would anybody know he did it if he didn't

That pretty much standard for killfiling and
pseudo-killfiling.

Jill,

Another idea, assemble them into Ambrosia kabobs. You could brush them with
sour cream so the coconut flakes would stick. Finger food, no bowls or
plastic spoons required.

Maybe put the coconut on the side also for the nut allergy sufferers?

Or not.

Best,

Andy

Lemme guess, you didn't even drink the aforementioned grape juice because
you were 'allergic' to that too?

I'm not going to get terribly worked up about what people may or may not be
allergic to. I'm willing to put the nuts in a bowl on the side but these
folks should know what (if anything) they are allergic to. This is pretty
much a retirement community. Everyone is old enough to know what they can
and can't eat by now. I should start worrying about sour cream now? I'd
rather just stay home.

Jill,

Shame, that!

The block party here was barricaded from traffic since practically the
whole block attended.

A fun event was when the local fire company rolled up with their water
canon truck and shot 50'+ jets of water into the air to shower the
guests caring to get wet and cool off. It was a $12 pay-per-house party
(paid for the whole hog caterer). The firefighters were gladly fed for
free! Their attendance was also to inspect the construction and safety
of a bon fire that lit up after the sun went down.

It was great fun!

Never to be repeated. [sigh]

Best,

Jill,

I understand!

One Halloween I gave out Hershey chocolate bars with almonds. I had to
ask all the trick or treaters if they were allergic to almonds. It
quickly became tiresome. That only happened once.

Don't sweat the sour cream, imho! Sounds like an interesting flavor
contrast!

BTW, the pavilion makes it a rain or shine block party.

Best,

Andy

None taken, I only recommended the hot dogs because you had already
mentioned the ambrosia salad -- I just thought that was the kind of
block party you were going to. Try this salad then instead.

Peasant Salad
1 large head romaine lettuce, washed, drained and chilled
2 medium tomatoes, cut into 1/2 inch wedges
1 large cucumber, cleaned, sliced 1/8 inch thick
6 to 8 radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced
4 green onions, cut into 1/4 inch slices
6 ounces feta cheese, coarsely crumbled
1/4 pound imported Greek black olives
1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh mint
1/2 cup olive oil
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons red-wine vinegar
1 clove garlic, crushed
1/2 teaspoon finely chopped fresh oregano
Tear lettuce into bite-size pieces. Place in large salad bowl and add
tomatoes, cucumber, radishes, onions, cheese and olives. Sprinkle
with mint. Blend remaining ingredients and pour over salad and toss
until thoroughly mixed. Serve immediately.

This is popular at our block parties and requested again and again.

Jill,

Heh heh heh heh heh!

I imagine you're speaking in jest.

But if the guests don't know the ingredients somehow, how are they going
to know if what's in a dish is bad for them? To me, it's a small measure
to a very real and important issue. I wasn't being anal, just
considerate.

I did go as far as to bring a screened food tent to keep the bugs out of
the guac! A *small* measure of anal, perhaps.

I wouldn't be passing out medicine such as Alka Seltzer. I WOULD be
worried about that. BYOA!!! ;)

Everybody was appreciative.
