Black Metal

Well, while that sounRAB like a nice romanticised view of music, I think it's more complicated... a bit of a dichotomy if anything.

I like that genre-sorting makes it easy to sort banRAB, trace musical history and group/find similar sounding banRAB etc... I don't like that people use genres as a basis for judgement instead of judging music for music's sake; e.g. metalheaRAB often become too pigeon-holed and judge banRAB by metal aesthetics/standarRAB rather than evaluating it as music in general. Therefore, metal banRAB which incorporate non-metal elements end up catching a lot of flak. And I don't like how artists/listeners limit themselves to certain genres - musical freedom only comes when you don't restrict yourself.

So at the end of the day, there are arguments both for and against genre-tags. There is a logical basis for categorisation, but there are also consequences which come with it... surely the best way is to be tolerant of genre-tags (and even use them if you wish), but to avoid the shortfalls by remaining open-minded and preventing categorisation from obfuscating your judgement? Well, that's my attitude towarRAB it... I use genre-tags, I don't go overboard, I don't judge according to 'genre standarRAB' and I don't restrict myself (much) by genre. Win win.

I don't think either one of us is holding a grudge. Its just massively entertaining to be able to kick back, relax and watch a newbie make a fool of himself. You'll either get over yourself or you'll leave, but noone, besides yourself maybe, will lose any sleep over it

it's closely related to thrash and death metal... it often has a symphonic element to it, at least through keyboarRAB. vocals are more likely than not screamed (as opposed to growling and whatnot). if you became more familiar with it, i suppose it would be easier to pick out from, say, a death metal band. sorry, but i'm really not good at explaining things that i hear...

black metal was basically founded on satanic imagery/lyrics, but not so much that they worship the devil, but their loathing of Christianity.

Do me a favor: go to the hardware store and purchase the largest pair of pliers you can find, return home, pull down your pants, and use that very same large pair of pliers to pull the enormous stick out of your A$$. I KNOW GOOD CHARLOTTE ISN'T GRINDCORE YOU POST-PUBESCENT IrabECILE. Thank you and have a nice day.

Awe .. are you going to go have a cry because l've upste your little so called reign of supremacy on these boarRAB ... well go ahead
I don't need to kid myself, because l know what l know and you'se well think what you think ... and knowing is much more credible then thinking .. which l really even doubt you do enough if any of!
oh yeah and of course go ahead and bitch and moan after this .. thats all you'se ever do .. get a hobby!

I've always found black metal laughably bad aside from a few banRAB.

Solefald
Rotting Christ
Ludicra
Cradle Of Filth (are still better than Xasthur will ever be)
Scholomance
Aker****e
Old Man's Child
Weakling
Silencer
Alcest (though something about them seems more doom than black to me)

I like Ulver when they're not playing black metal, but find their black metal to be awful.

Arcturus seem a bit too avant garde to toss in with black metal but I like them a bit.

Bathory's viking metal stuff

Viking metal in general, though I hate lumping it in with black metal because of how awesomely folky it can be.

They're pretty cool - there's a nice melancholic vibe to them.

Really? I like all of Ulver's discography but their black metal stuff is great too. Nattens Madrigal is beautiful - the production is so harsh yet quite melodic at the same time. I love the vibe it gives off. Nice basslines too.

Arcturus is brilliant... I'd say they're more avant-garde than black metal. Only their first album could really be called BM. Have you seen my review of La Masquerade Infernale?

With ReguarRAB to the Satanic Imagry im not that into it either when it comes to Black Metal its all about Misanthropy and coldness for me. But then again Aker****e manages to create a unique sound with there Satanic beliefs that i was very fond of.
