Black man defends home, self, son from lynch mob and gets PRISON for it

Just out of curiosity... to change the scenario:

I know you think the homeowner wasn't in self-defense because he left his house, drew his gun, and did everything he could to escalate the situation to where he shot one of the punks.

But let's say the homeowner left his house, drew his gun, pointed it at one of the punks... and then that teen drew his own gun and gunned down the homeowner. Would you think that teen should be able to plead self-defense?

(Everything else being equal... The teens were outside shouting for the homeowner's son to come out and have a fist fight or whatever)

You keep saying he was safe, but we can't know whether he really was or not, because history took an optional path- one that stopped a possible attack. It's like saying someone was chasing you on your motorcycle. So, you stopped at a gas station and ran inside. Are you safe? You don't KNOW, until you can look back and say "yea, I jumped off my bike, ran in the gas station, and waited for a while. Went back outside, and the stalker left."

Of course, history might have played out differently, and the story could go "the disgruntled motorist that 7960 cut off in traffic grabbed a tire iron from his trunk, went into the gas station, and beat 7960 to death while the helpless store clerk dialed 9-1-1..."

Which ever course history takes, we can only guess as to the other possible outcome.

And I still maintain that violent criminals intruding on your property to make threats to your family are a real danger.

I seriously doubt you advocate letting the bad guys actually smash in your face before deciding "well, I guess they weren't 'only' threatening to kill me, so maybe I should try to drag my lifeless body off the ground and defend myself"

sounds like fair game if they drive up to someone's house and start yelling racial slurs at them

That is the first correct thing you'd said on this thread so far.

He and you aren't obligated to lock yourself inside your house. He didn't remain inside his house. He went back out and shot someone who was standing in the street. He is, however, obligated to go to prison for doing that.

Stop trolling me. You know perfectly fucking well I didn't say "shoot anyone who might be dangerous".

Bullshit. One had to do with the difference between children and a gang of teenagers that are essentially grown men who simply haven't reached the age of majority, and the other had to do with the criminal justice system. Why are you intentionally trying to conflate two completely different statements?

And chase his son, and make threats against their lives. I'm justifying the shooting because they made it fucking clear that they WERE a danger to him and his family.

Shitty situation but the it appears as of the guys didn't attempt to come in, right? I believe that is the law in NY

Well, I know nothing of the case other than what you posted here, but it seems obvious he didn't call 911 until after he shot the punk.

I do believe in castle doctrine. I also believe that if anyone is stupid enough to come on your property threatening you or your family, with a gang of punk friends, then he has effectively chosen to throw his life away at any moment.

However, it's easy enough to realize White broke the law. He chose to confront the punk. That really isn't allowed in NY. I may not agree with the law, but that's what happens when you break it.

So you agree that in almost any other state he would not have been in any trouble, yet you maintain that he was wrong? Are you discussing right and wrong, or "legal and illegal in NYC"?

In any state where the laws have any semblance of sanity, it doesn't matter where the criminal is standing in relation to your property line. If he is a threat to your safety, then you can defend yourself.

I learned a long time ago "if you're in a fair fight, you're doing something wrong"

Personally I think it has gotten worse for the average person. Especially for minorities. Things like zero tolerance and minimum mandatories are antithesis to a "free" society.

What if the guy raped the dead kids sister? The criminal is loose, and the rape victim has a dead brother.
