Bev Testing MPEG4

But that is their problem. It is like they are starting over from scratch. All those years of inflated bills haven't really left any usable hardware in the sky. With as long as they have been around that really doesn't feel like progress.

Then I think it is safe to assume that Bell are NOT using only 500Mhz of the Signal Spectrum.

I'm not sure any of that is "confirmed" officially but it seems to be common wisdom from various leaked sources and common sense.

I'm not sure "international channels" will move to MPEG-4 anytime soon but they are mostly on the 82

Who says americans can't subscribe to canadian tv? the only answer i have is "Sky's the limit, mis amigos/as" ;)

But until Bev can work out the logistics of a suitable customer friendly deployment plan for their OWN receivers to get MPEG4, all the 'testing' is rather useless, except for the benefits of the pirates presumably already watching it. :p

Of course if they screw it up enough or as well as they handled the whole new receiver thingy with DHC, then it will only be the uninformed new customer that will actually get one as everybody else will have found a new provider with a future not built on lies and deceit.

MPEG4 or not testing, adequate space needs to be found to make it worthwhile.
They could start flipping existing HD's, but would have to have new receivers out plus a spare TP to handle the migration.

If you are from the middle east then yes there are a lot of programing on FTA , otherwise you have to pay , or steal.

They could stand for 12 more, but they have improved, but that was easy when they were in the HD basement.

The 6412 isn't too bad a unit.
I've got one as well as the *C DSR530 amongst several others.

What I like about it is the dual tuner/record versus the *C 1.5 tuner model and the NBR, all works well.
I just think the IPG is a little tacky, but then I'm comparing it to the state of the art IPG that *C just got this week (I designed it last year, so I'm a little biased)

And a 4700 with NO PIG for an HD and PVR and 2 tuner, how the hell can you go wrong with that?
Plus no contracts or crazy fees and free service, all good.

Bundle it with Internet and/or phone and save even more money.

Maybe they have found a new supplier from China that can churn out the new receivers for less than twenty bucks American ($100 Canadian)!

I agree, at least 2 or 3 possibly more. Which is why I do not understand the mad rush for the 6141 & 9242's. Yes I know they will be feature rich when it's all implemented but I feel that holding onto the 6100 & 9200's it will be interesting to see what is offered to exchange them for MPEG4 capable receivers.

I think we will have a better idea of timeframe, when we actually see an active swap program announced.

I dont see it being an option, or they would do it with the 6100's and 9200's...
Time to let the old girl go to the big home theatre in the sky
She has served you well....hehe
Hopefully you can get some credit on the purchase of your new receiver, and you will be more than happy with it, especially if you get PVR capabilities

Indeed, and more bits per transponders probably mean more channels (as you mentionned, I think they will go with 4 channels per 8PSK TP, so this could mean a capacity for 32 additional channels with a bitrate of 9 to 10 Mbps per channel, which is the same as we have now on with 3 channels per QPSK transponder).

Why don't make a conversion for HiFidelity channels from MPEG 2 to MPEG 4 when the new receivers come available ?

And maybe Bell has a contract with HiFidelity and cannot remove these channels...

Excellent. I hope it's true.

Maybe TVA HD, TQS HD, Showcase HD and National Geographic HD in MPEG 4.

The sub base is substantially more manageable, so it would be a good test of the logistics dept. to test a MPEG4 receiver rollout.

When they pull that off and convert 82 ethnic to MPEG4, that would free additional space to catchup their missing HD's that other providers have carried for a while now and do so in an MPEG2 format.

This would settle the natives while MPEG4 receivers continue to sold to new subs and arrangements for swap/upgrade or whatever are made.

With no disrespect to ethnic subscribers, the price per channel is so much higher due to the lower volume of take up and lack of many viable alternatives, that they might well think this demographic would easily tolerate an imposed upgrade to maintain current programming.

There are some non PVR MPEG4 models and while HD, can work in place of any SD sets.
In many cases, Dish practically gives them away, so with their volumes and Bev's ability to tail in on it, it may be cost effective to offer these at near cost or less just to be able to migrate that much sooner and try and retain some competitive advantage, for if they don't, Bev as we know it today could look radically different at the alledged time of their suspected MPEG4 rollout.

I should should I, well that might raise the level of intelligence there.
Actually I already work with Bev on several projects.

take a look at lyngsat, THERE IS FREE TO AIR tv, believe it or not
ctown is a pirate, get him!
where is my mccarthy beating stick when i need it
ugggghhhhh
do they speak spanish/russian/thai/turkish/etc in the middle east?
seems to be alot of those other language channels out there too
maybe im wrong
please, if im wrong, someone kick my soap box out from under me

Dilemma:
We have unconfirmed reports from some posters, myself included and some .US forums claiming Bev is testing MPEG4.

We have an apparent insiders claiming quite the opposite.

Seems we seen this type of thing before. What does it mean?
Can any industry professionals verify the MPEG4 claim, since there is always reasons to doubt the findings when the equipment is a new MPEG4 FTA unit and how it reacts with foreign signals is not known?

And what reason might Bev have to discredit such a report?
Could they not want to reveal their timeline?
Could the program be stalled?
Do they just want to discredit anything that they didn't announce officially?
Shouldn't there be more activity if the rumour of an impending MPEG4 package is imminent?
Will Hugh and Bev do battle once again over this type of controversy?
Have any insiders got a tip from the warehouseman that new boxes are arriving?
Can any Telesat people confirm Bev testing?
Is Sensual Poet actually right about Bev being stalled for the foreseeable future?
