Bev Testing MPEG4

While we all share the communal love in for Scott let's remember exactly what he said yesterday:

Parts of this have been categorically denied by Bell in these forums. The rest of the info flies in the face of the laws of physics and the more practical laws of business economics. None of it takes into account the influence of Bell ALSO in the midst of the chaos of the world's largest leveraged buyout where, forgive me for mentioning it, all levels of Bell employees are looking over their shoulders in an atmosphere of uncertainty.

None of this helps a large organization function to peak performance.

If Scott genuinely has insider knowledge, let's examine HOW Bell could deliver these goods in Sep (or Oct or Nov) to a significant base of existing ExpressVu HD subscribers. That's not letting out state secrets, merely showing it is technically possible and what needs to be sacrificed to get there.

With 200k+ HD subscribers, and not ONE SINGLE (paying) existing subscriber at July 26 having the capability of receiving an MPEG-4 HD channel, how on earth -- why on earth? -- would Bell launch "a package of new MPEG4 HD channels" in Sep (or Oct or Nov)?

The strength of these Digital Home Forums is the robustness of the discussions -- and the clear headed thinking of the posters where rational debate can take place. I'm not convinced that "you have no idea who I am" quite ratifies what otherwise appears to be ill-informed and unsubstantiated speculation about Canadian satellite corporate developments.

ARR you again raise a very interesting point with the potential warranty issues.

I believe that the "right" way is to do exactly what you say, put out an MPEG4 promo channel, I guess it can be an SD one and does not really need to be on 82 either.

Are you willing to take the chance that BEV will give you a big credit to turn in your old receivers? I didn't want to take the chance and upgraded both my 6100 and 9200 last week. I paid $700.00 + tax for the new ones and sold the old ones for $500.00. The $200.00 to upgrade both was a very good deal in my opinion.

So Bell is lying when he says that he will not make a migration to MPEG 4 before 2009....or it's time to find a new tv providers because Bell we not be able to add HD channels before 2009.

No doubt 8PSK is coming. However it does have finer tolerances than the current modulation and will mean some customers experience signal issues. Plus, of course, 8PSK still needs to be decoded at the set top box. Are Bell ExpressVu 9200 and 6100 boxes 8PSK enabled today? If not, the same problem as MPEG4 applies: you need to upgrade/replace all customer hardware. That is expensive, and takes time, and forecloses the notion that any or many channels will be moved to the more efficient encoding systems any time soon.

A lot of questions without answer and i think it's time for ExpressVu to give answer to keep the confidence of his customers and to attract new customers.

Bell is playing big, if they don't give answer, they could lose a lot of clients...

They would need an additional satellite with a better Western exposure.
The 82 and 91 favour the East.

I wonder if they semi-merged with *C and became the evil Eastern Regional provider with an a twin Western Regional provider.

Same lineup, same pricing, Bev 'operates' the East and *C 'operates' the West. Either as separate entities or as part of a joint venture with a common secure platform.

The 107/111 slots that Telesat operates are PRIME for Canadian coverage and have excellent U.S. footprints for our snowbird Canadian friends.

If you have to start over, you might as well bail now and invest in their IPTV future, a more core competence as it's foundation is wireline.

They drop Much More Retro and Much Loud but they add BabyFirst TV and Military Channel...

bevfan, I have just spent 3 hours on-line trying to buy a Nintendo Wii for a relative of mine.

There appear to be none available in stores, working on your ass back-wards Logic, does this now mean they do not exist any more.?????

And for your clarification only, because I think most other people on here fully understand what is going on, YOU CAN BUY MPEG4 HD PVR , just call Dishnetwork, they will gladly sell you one, you know they are available down there. You never said you needed it for Express Vu reception....

Also go out and get a FTA HD box and an external USB Drive, record all the MPEG4 HD you require.

Some wish it was the case nimiq, but its not, unless you want to be branded a criminal, even if you are paying direct tv, to get spanish programming, that you cannot even buy in canada

Call Direct TV, and try and order it, with a canadian billing address, it wont happen
Unless you lie, and give an american address, or use a canadian "broker" to set up your account, and deal with billing
I have always wondered, if these people, paying "legitimately" for an american provider, would be charged for receiving an american service?

That's a given and part of the thinking behind launching MPEG-4 big-time in 2009.

But Scott said in "Sep" MPEG-4 HD receivers will be in market from Bell and that "a package of new MPEG-4 HD channels" would launch at the same time -- I dunno: Showcase, National Geographic, MMOre, RDS, CBC West, TVA, TQS, The Score ... there's a package of 8. Bell will be hard-pressed to find satellite space ofr these -- even on MPEG-4 -- plus I still don't see the point of launching a "new package" for a few dozen, few hundred new HD subscribers and expect them to pay for them as well.

Longer term, of course new packages, new ALL MPEG-4 packages, will come on down. But given Bell said they WON'T launch "updated" HD receivers till Q4, it's sort of unlikely to launch 8 channels in a package absolutely no one will be able to receive.

Does anyone have any info on which new HD channels Bell actually WILL launch next? In writing they have promised CBC West, TVA, TQS and RDS ... but I haven't seen a timeline for those. Or an incremental cost, if any.

Are you sure the entire transponder has to be moved to MPEG4? I can see having to move an entire transponder to do 8psk but not MPEG4.

Scott is very plugged in down in the US. Much more so than say that Swanni yahoo but that doesn't really say much. I can think of some posters that used to be on here that used to have very good creduble info that I only hear any thing from on US boards now. Ken being one of the people I can think of and Scott is probably still communicating with them.

But Scott also has other places he could be getting info from other than Bev and Dish. For example he could have been talking to some one from a station in the US going HD and they just happened to mention they would be rolling out up here in the fall. I don't know if that has in fact happened and I would expect to see an application in front of the CRTC soon if it was. But the point is if you swing by the board that Scott is associated with you will find Scott has been ahead of the info curve on a lot of different things down there.

But does the "international channel gambit" really accomplish anything? There are about 21 SD TV channels in the portfolio, all on 82

I pay for HD reception, if they change the way they transmit that HD signal, should I not expect a replacement receiver to enable me to still receive the programming.?

If they supply a signal that my receiver can no longer convert, they are breaking the contract to supply me with what I pay for.

I think you will be surprised at what is offered. The more people think the sky is falling will only make the final change cheaper for Express Vu.

There is nothing from europe worth watching , all the good channels need subscription. Many channels from europe are free just for a while then you have to pay.I have had real FTA for many years , before many people even heard about. It was next to impossible to buy an FTA receiver years ago , so I know very well what is availeble on FTA.If real FTA had quality international programming , there would not be so many dishes pointed at 61.5 bird.

I am just new to this site, and am reading complete threads and
trying to get a concensus for what is happening with a "new" BEV
PVR.

It appears that there are many of you that have access to or know where to get more "inside" information than us regular folk.

As an aside, I am new to BEV and shake my head at the apparent
secrecy regarding giving what I would consider good information out
to their subscribers.

So I throw this out for a hopefully definitive answer:

When is this new PVR going to be available for sale and is it worth the wait
vs a 9200?
