Bev Testing MPEG4

A few points and then perhaps I will leave this forum. Im trying to give you information and some of you guys don't seem to want me here.

1) I AM an ExpressVu subscriber. And I do know folks at ExpressVu. Plus I work closely with folks from Echostar who are helping ExpressVu with all of this stuff.

2) There was a statement that just because they are now testing MPEG4 does not mean they will be done testing it in 2 - 3 months. Remember the encoders were tested on ExpressVu's Dish Network in the USA, the Echostar folks will be helping ExpressVu with this. It's not like ExpressVu is reinventing the wheel.

3) What the F*ck is 720i?

4) Just because they are testing MPEG4 does not mean that all the MPEG2 will convert tommorow to MPEG4. I can't believe how PARANOID some of you guys are about this, it makes me wonder if your scared because your hacking it.

5) When MPEG4 comes you will be given the opportunity to upgrade, the upgrade will NOT be free. Some of you think you will wake up and find a shiny new MPEG4 receiver at your door. Sorry its not going to happen that way. If your upset about this cancel NOW and call Starchoice or Rogers.

6) Existing channels in MPEG2 HD will probably not switch over to MPEG4 for at least a year if not longer, the only channels planned for MPEG4 are new HD channels. If you want them you can upgrade, if you don't then you do nothing and continue to enjoy what you get now.

7) Relax, and enjoy it! It's only TV!

Uh ohh
I hope a review of my posts isnt done
Ive spent ALOT of time in these threads too!
I think I like the action in here
Always something funny/interesting to read
I got a little heated when I first joined, but have mellowed...
I also think you should ban ARR, cause he has said things I dont like about Bell, and how Starchoice is better
Actually, everyone who has a different opinion than me should be banned, or at least get an infraction/warning
I dont like people thinking differently than me
This would be an interesting forum then
Probably alot like the way Bell envsioned the site should be, when they tried to bully Hugh into "censoring" negative posts/threads about Bell
Nothing personal bev fan, but your credibilty is suffering, after admitting that you own an FTA box
I know it doesnt make you a criminal, but if I were to use your logic, I would think you are, even if there is a reasonable doubt
Don't take it to heart, in the end, this site is here to help others with technology
You may/will disagree with other members, but dont let it get you down
How bout a hug?

But doesn't the NFL require that your signal not be hackable in order to carry their games. Therefore maybe forcing EVu into doing something like switching to mpeg4 in order to get permission to show NFL Sunday Ticket.Don't want to lose those revenue's to the pirates.Just a thought.

There's a number of services that could be offered at 72.5, where the vast majority of subscribers would be able to receive the signal...for starters, I'd move the following from 91 to 72.5:

100 - SRC Moncton
101 - TVA Rimouski
102 - TQS Riviere du Loup
103 - TVA Riviere du Loup
104 - TQS Saguenay
105 - TVA Saguenay
106 - TQS Sherbrooke
107 - TVA Sherbrooke
108 - SRC Sherbrooke
116 - TVA Rouyn Noranda
117 - TVA Gatineau
128 - Argent
131 - Ztele
132 - Series+
133 - Historia
134 - Canal Evasion
136 - Mystere
143 - ARTV
147 - RFO
148 - L'Assemblee nationale du Quebec
153 - Prise 2
185 - Cinepop
196 - Local News - CTV Ottawa / CBC NB
197 - Local News
203 - CBC Halifax
857 - Series + HD

Yes, if Bev is testing MPEG-4 that is a good thing. Maybe this is true currently, maybe it isn't.

But before anyone gets excited about more or better HD being around the corner keep in mind a few inalienable facts:
  • no Bell ExpressVu HD subscribers have an MPEG-4 receiver
  • Bell must update its uplink facilities to support MPEG-4
  • Bell's partners/wholesalers must update all their downlink centres to support receiving MPEG-4
  • Bell will have to decide which channels to drop from MPEG-2 to make room for MPEG-4 versions until at least 2009
  • this wouldn't apply to 2 or 3 channels but unless you can convert all or most there is little savings
  • Bell has indicated it won't sell/rent any MPEG-4 receivers until perhaps Q4
  • it will take 12 to 18 months, if they started today, to get in position to do some sort of "switch-over"
These are "show-stoppers" in terms of launching an MPEG-4 HD service in 2007 and probably for most of 2008.

MPEG-4 HD Testing: good.
Near-term benefit to HD subscribers: zero.

Are you serious???? They sent a notice to their installers that the receivers are coming. The pdf is on this site.

Just curious how you can tell if the signal is really 720p or 720i. I know that the receiver reports it but how do we know if the receiver is wrong or right? Is there another to tell?

I think Bell will move Nimiq 2 from 82W to 91W to backup Nimiq 1 and place the new Nimiq 4 satellite at 82W and go with 8PSK, so they will have the space to go with 4 channels / transponder...;)

Did they mention how many pirates they were able to cut off, or how many RVer's they caught?

As Scott stated, for net new HD customers, for current SD customers that are on the fence wrt making the jump to HD and existing HD customers that are willing to upgrade their receivers now or later as more and more channels are only available as mpeg4 streams. Mpeg4 capable receiver can also process mpeg2 streams, so there is no immediate reason for BEV to a big bang upgrade for all existing channels and current HD receivers.

Maybe it's a reason why Bell doesn't go to the 8PSK last year when it made the test.

It is the same thing to go to MPEG 4, i.e. need to increase power ?

The switch to mpeg4 really does nothing for security as its already possible to receive mpeg4 channels with some FTA boxes. I can see why they might drag their feet on this one. I personally would subscribe to dishnet in a second to get their hd programing line up if it was not illegal for me to do so
.
As for the international subscibers I can see a swap back firing for them on this too as MANY international channels are available free using true FTA with a motor, larger dish and circular/linear lnb one time $250 investment for lots of ethnic programing. I already let anyone that I know pays for this type of programing that it is legally free and out there for them if they wish.

8PSK is the modulation of the signal and does not effect compression or quality of the picture. Mpeg4 is the compressor and it effects the picture. The 8PSK is
harware bound at the sat. and can not be changed.
Mpeg4 is done at the station ( bell head end ) and can
be changed as 8PSK does not care what kind of signal it
encodes, it is just 0's and the 1's.
